GE Refrigerator Water Dispenser Slow or No Flow
*PLEASE SUBSCRIBE* to my channel, that is the best way of saying thanks!!
This video addresses slow or no flow on the GE refrigerator water dispenser caused by a not-fully-actuating water manifold plunger. This was for the refrigerator model GSS23WGTA BB but its most likely applicable for many models. The replacement part is: WR17X20860 - MWF Manifold Tubes and Assembly.
In the video I mention "rigging it" with a washer... Its been so long and I believe I found the one that I originally custom made to fit... if this is it, it measures 29.35mm OD (about 13/16"in) and 14.1mm ID (~9/16in).Other people have been using a rubber garden hose washer. Hope that helps!
FYI Comment from R. Bremner: By the way, GE seems to have released an updated filter head to address this issue. For my fridge it is part #: WR17X20860. Also, be aware that the existing MWF filter may not fit, I was told the replacement is MWFP?

THANK YOU VERY MUCH. We have suffered from this problem of NO WATER coming out of the dispenser EVERY time we have changed the filter. We have spent money ordering new filters and waiting forever for them in vain. This video finally showed us the secret. When we simply pushed that small valve with a pencil, water flow gushed out, we reattached the filter, and BAM, all was well with the world. The GE customer service was a sad joke. They had no clue about this and gave ZERO practical advice after waiting over 30 minutes on hold. Thank you again for taking the time to post this. It was a HUGE help for our GE Refrigerator Water Dispenser problem. Really great job.

Fantastic idea. After a few filter changes the ramps (on the filter) that push that little valve up, round off the point on the valve. We have had nothing but problems with our GE since we bought it. I have actually done the correct "fix" once. This time I was not going to spend a dime on this junk. The lid from a cool whip container seems to be a good thickness. I took a 1/2" hollow punch and made a nice hole in the middle of the lid. Then with a pair of scissors, I cut around the hole leaving just enough material to cover the tabs(ramps) that open that little valve. Perfect fix. 10 minutes time, and didn't spend a dime!

Grateful for the video. My issue was resolved (very slow water flow after replacing GE MWF filter with an MR8. Your discussion of the bladder trigger (3:37) prompted me to look closely at the trigger. Using a small dental pick with a brush end and poking around the trigger, I loosened a granule of sediment, causing the trigger to drop down to its full depth. After reinstalling the new filter, all worked just as it should.

Thanks for the info. Seeing how the mechanics work helped me resolve my issue. Turned out to be the filter not being seated enough. I even bought a second filter and got a slow dribble of water. The bypass plug would result in full flow so I did not figure that it was the actual valve. I think that the valve may go sometime in the near future because it is so hard to fully seat the filter. Again, thanks for showing how this functioned.

(PS...I previously tried to get help via an 1-800 call to GE service but their rep was not only unhelpful, but also very unprofessional and outright rude.) BTW, this appears to be a highly common problem, so you'd think GE would have offered a recall or at least redesigned an obviously faulty system.

Wow!!! Thank you for this video. All the others are about frozen water lines. That wasn't my problem. I used the cap off a soda bottle and whittled it down with a dremel. I found the washer I had was too thick to screw the filter back up so this was perfect. I'm renting and the landlord was reluctant to fix this but here I did it with 5 minutes of my own time, the ghetto way. Again, thank you for a very good video.

All these posts reflect what I went through. A lot of videos and time. I finally found yours. The quick fix hack was just what I needed. I went out to the garage to find a washer. Immediately saw a garden hose washer and voila, the quick solution. Works so well I don’t think I’ll bother with the replacement part. Thanks for posting this. I wish I had found it sooner.👍👌🤙.

Good job on the video my friend. Saved me some time indeed. My water valve manifold was very full of rusty deposit and the little plunger you pointed out was pressed in and stuck there. That position should allow water to flow, but I think the whole thing is full of rust. I'm soaking it in white vinegar over night to see if it cleans up. If it does I will probably re-install an order another one. Thanks again for boldly going where I have never gone before.

Updated reply 4 years later. Thanks for the vid dawg! Had same problem following filter replacement, I simply shut the water off, released the pressure with my thumb and also from the door side while all pressure removed and installed the new filter again. Triggered the valve a few times without pressure and mines working good again without a washer. One thing to note, it appeared the new filter wasn't locking fully into place due to the new materials against the O-rings and I got a pop after using a small towel and turned it more. Why did I do this? I compared the locked position of the filter to the old one and noticed the new unit wasn't turning the same distance when locking into place even though it appeared to be fully locking. Removing that cover helps a lot! Thanks again! Hope these notes helps others.

God bless you sir! This was the same issue my Kenmore 111.73045 was experiencing. So I followed your "hack" or cheap method for making a washer/shim and voila! No more pipe chattering!

This was very helpful for giving me an outline of the problem. I was lucky, in that just re-screwing the place holder filter in and out a few times seemed to do the trick. Thank you for such an informative video!

Thank you for posting this because it helped me immensely. I used a thin rubber washer/gasket for a hose connector I had on hand & it worked. A thicker one did not. I plan to buy a few more gaskets for future use.

After I reveiwed the above information, I found the problem. YEAH! The filter will screw on at 180*, the correct positioning so the trigger aligns properly is Only with the Label faceing you. It will only work one way to press the trigger fully. Just reverse the filter if this happens to you!

Your video was very helpful helping us troubleshoot our issue. Following your instructions we switched out the filter valve assembly in less than an hour. Took extra time only due to cleaning all the dust bunnies we found and sweeping/mopping while the fridge was pulled out. Thanks again for your clear and detailed video.

This video was FANTASTIC!!! At least for me! I had the same exact problem, noise, etc. I tried the washer trick first but it didn't help me personally. At least, based on the video, I knew what part I had to replace. I ordered it via Amazon Prime and it fixed my problem! Fortunately for me, my version of this fridge is newer and was much easier to replace the part. Thank you sshawn09!!!

Another save here in Texas. Thanks! I lucked out and had found a coiled piece of metal and could cut off a single loop and it fit perfectly. I guess I'll be ordering a new manifold soon or will steal one from my spare fridge in the garage that has no water connection.

THANKS!!! GE doesn't say anything about this in their troubleshooting guides (the easy-to-find ones, anyway), and most of the DIY sites just parrot GE. After I finally reduced the problem to indicate the filter mount, I was able to search for the solution, and found your video first. Thanks, sshaw09!!!

This video really saved the day! I thought I would share my success, as it was a little easier than fashioning a special washer... As it turns out, a water hose gasket is the PERFECT size for this. It was really quick and easy to just pop in - and, luckily I had one laying around.
