THANK YOU. I was about to give up. I watched the installation videos over and over but mine wouldn't work. I called GE support and they told me to push the filter in and twist it! None of the instructional videos said to do that. Finally I put searched "problem installing filter" and it took me right here. Got a wooden spoon and boom filter is in THANK YOU - you saved a marriage.

Your advice addresses an important gap in the manufacturer's instructions on the replacement filter package, which fail to note that you need to swing the filter housing out before removing the old filter. I didn't have a wooden spoon handle with the right diameter, but eventually found a piece of flatware whose handle was a good enough fit. Really appreciate your uploading the video with a good, clear explanation of the problem and solution.

My husband passed in May so here I am an old lady trying to adjust to this loss AND do things I'm not sure how too.Well I had to replace the filter ,I took it out before it was FULLY open and couldn't get the new one in ! Comment from another video that worked: For those of you having trouble getting the new filter in. Stick the butt end of a sharpie into the white hole and turn the white piece so it lines up with the grey outer piece. Worked like a charm.

Put the wooden spoon in and moved the inside to the fully out position and then the cartridge went in and locked into place!!!! No pressure pushing in the filter at all. Just hold in place and swing back into the holder. The directions never said it didn’t need any pressure! Your wooden spoon did the trick! My cousin is so grateful. She is back in ice and cold water! OMG after struggling for 30 minutes to replace my filter, after watching your video-Houston-we have success! Grabbed my wooden spoom, spun the door open, and voila-it worked. Thank you for giving me back my sanity. I have replaced this filter so many times and could NOT figure out why this time was different.

I tried a silicone coated spoon, a metal flatware spoon, and FINALLY located a wooden spoon with a half inch or 5/8 inch diameter. It went in like butter, was able to turn the housing out. Pushed in the filter. Voila! Thank you so much. Now, I know to clear the stuff at the top of the refrigerator so I can open the filter to the 45 degree angle.

Hi Sir, you just saved me closed to 400 in repairs. Thank you. Through GE just 109 to come then labor and part. I had to be patient in pushing on white part of the hinge. For a woman you have to used a little more force. It work. I am so ever grateful for this KZfaq. God bless you. You are the only one that showed us in what to do. Thanks again.

Thanks! had the same problem! BTW, there is a empty filter bypass available for those of us who don't want/need filtering. GE is supposed to send that part with the fridge but they don't! One can get it for free from GE if you call their number. They are all Sneaky, I know! Also when you put that authentic GE bypass in, the panel will say every time you get water or ice "Not filtering". Fine by me, we have excellent quality town water.

OMG, thank you SO MUCH. We are always frustrated by this water filter, and finally someone explained the importance of rotating the old filter all the way out, otherwise you can’t fit the new one in the housing without breaking the plastic things on the side. Whew, gonna be a master of this frig now.

Exactly what I needed. I suspected the housing was out of alignment, used a sharpie marker because all my wooden spoons are flat-handled for some reason. Many thanks!

You got me on the right track, but I couldn’t figure out exactly what you meant. So….to help further, you’ll know it’s not going to work if the gray and white parts of the hinge/housing aren’t properly aligned. Push the inner white part, using the end of the spoon, to meet up with the gray part. The end of a sharpie works well also…. THANK YOU!

Mr Ramirez, I love you!! You are the ONLY one who knows what the problem was. I bought a generic filter from Amazon. Tried to fit in and it would not stay. I bought another on Amazon but chose the GE filter. Same problem. I called GE and they said all the filters sold on Amazon are bogus. Amazon returned my money and told me to keep both filters. Went to Lowes the next day and bought a authentic GE filter. Still would not work........I screamed all kinds of words. Mind you we are having a heat wave in Ohio. 2 days with no ice or cold, filtered water. GE web site was useless. Then I got on KZfaq and found you! You are the only one who has figured out this problem. Once again I love you.......the ice and water is flowing again!

Thank you! I had changed the filter twice before with no problem, but this time it would NOT fit in when I pushed. I used the wooden spoon handle and shifted the housing ever so slightly to the right -- and BAM -- in it went - no more problems. I add my thanks to those I saw here (which convinced me to try it).

Concept worked like a charm- but I had to get a chopstick- because the spoon was slightly bigger than the water filter- THANKS MARCO

All the instructions to install the new RWPFE emphasize not twisting the new filter, but not to make sure that the hole where it's being seated is fully swung out.
