Cordless Drill Restoration Video
In this video I restored a Dewalt xrp 18v drill that I got from japan recycle shop only 10$. I need to buy new battery 25$ and battery charger 28$. I totally spent 63$ for this project. After the restoration, I used it for a while, it works very well but a little bit heavy for me. It weights 2kg.

I took apart my 18v DeWalt drill and spread everything on a picnic table with a huge paper tablecloth. I labeled each grouping of parts as I went and meticulously serviced, cleaned, replaced worn parts and labeled the tablecloth for reassembly. Just before I could begin the repairs, my 2 year old Black Lab chased a squirrel out of the yard and dragged the table cloth with all of my parts across the lawn with him. My new DeWalt Drill cost me $179 and I’m still mowing over missing parts strewn throughout my lawn.

I like this sort of thing too but I could just never justify sinking that much time into fixing up an obsolete NiCad drill. It's not a matter of usefulness at this point its a matter of pride and/or fun. I got three air impacts 1" and 1 1/2" that were gonna be chucked out when we moved in to a new yard. Worth about $1,000+ each, if they work. Didn't have my own - Worth repairing. Fixed 'em up, new vanes, new grease, new/fixed trigger assy's and repaired the fittings and off you go.
@johntate4638
@johntate4638 4 жыл бұрын
@Skodaman2 No, I needed to be more clear. If you already have a new dewalt lithium battery drill and want to convert an old one it is easy. They sell a thing that snaps into where the old NiCad battery was and then you just slide a new Dewalt Lithium battery on that. Only use charger for lithium batteries. If you don't have a new drill then cost of converter, battery, and charger might be a bad idea and to expensive.

For christ sake if pepole are going to trash talk a tool get your facts straight The type 1 units are no longer available from Dewalt if you're lucky enough to still have them there still running brushes will probably need replacing at some point yes. batteries will corrode. But it's a beast. Got SDS drills that have been battered from new still going strong one of wich mixes up plaster in a 16L tubs, sometimes upto 8 buckets a day.. The others ofter have to drill 4x2 timber or cast concrete etc I've Never replaced brushes in not one of them.. Why because there built to last. The new model power tools from almost every manufacturer are all trash, give them around 2 years max heavy use... They burn out battery's cost a fortune to replace. Great upload fantastic work. 👍 👍

True that... I have one of these DeWALT cordless drills, it has been abused but its still going strong. Knocked it off a roof once and it only had some scuffs on it. Mixed plaster with it. Drilled into concrete. Used a 2 foot long bit to bore into a fence post length ways. Put up more plasterboard than I like to think about. Built many a fence and shed, no trouble driving 5 inch screws in right to the scrotum. One of the 2 batteries it came with has started to get a bit weak but that is after almost 10 years of abuse and the other one is still doing fine... a replacement battery isn't a mint on eBay either if the mood took me to replace it.

I restored one of these! I love how the gearbox and brushes can be removed so easily. You can still get brushes for these, too! Trouble with mine was the torque ring was busted - the slip ring was so worn down from constant years of use that it only does drill and hammer mode.

I don't care what anyone says, the old dewalt drills xrp stuff is the best for reliability, I still use dewalt xrp dcd950 hammer drill and my dewalt dc825 impact driver on a daily basis at my job, I've been using them for many years, they always work and never die, I only had to replace one battery 5 years ago due to water damage. I used a dewalt dcd996 hammer drill from december 2017 till June 2018 and it died, somthing on a microchip board blew up while I was drill a 1inch pice of oak with a 3/8" drill bit that was fresh. I switched back to my trusty old dcd950 and never had an issue since. My old dc825 impact driver has never given any issues what so ever. Great restoration on this drill it looks like a dc925.

150USD? You can get DCD996 for such money. Brushed motors belong to the 90s. BL is cheaper to produce and when well designed, it will outlast any kind of motor by massive margin. And they can be made waterproof.
@ajloefer7156
@ajloefer7156 5 жыл бұрын
I buy, sell, and trade power tools all the time. That thing was worth about $15usd before the restoration and about $30 afterwards. Those 18 volt dewalts are almost worthless considering they run on the old style Nicad batteries. Any one who wants more than 5 min of run time out of their batteries goes with a lithium ion. Go on eBay, you can get a brand new Dewalt dcd996 (top of two line, professional grade) drill for about $90. That drill is worth no where near $150 like you claim.

That was good. Very complex things are battery drills. I agree about the paint not holding up over time, but what the heck. At least the thing works well, saved the guys a lot of dollars and most importantly, hasn't gone into landfill. Presentation was pointed - no small talk. I hate that when guys do demo's and just blab on. Talking's fine if it adds to the presentation. Well done!

I coulda used this a decade ago. Tossed that drill and have gone through 3 since. You are clearly a wizard with puzzles. And you also invented a new tool. The rapid file. Just need to attach your round file to a sawsall that doesnt oscillate and you can get it done as fast as it gets done in fast forward. Maybe oscillation will work but either way that musta been painful filing that socket 😂🏋️‍♂️

Just buy the adapters so you expand the tool collection as the old batteries go. That's one thing I like about dewalt. They support their platform for a long time.

Weather it's dewalt , makita Bosch or milwalkee it's the tool holding it that counts , dewalt is fine if it does what it's designed to do and the tool on the end of it knows what they are doing.

The electronics have a special coating so it works in the rain. The gears are metal. It is 3 speed for a wide and accurate torque range and consistency of driving screws from a number 6 drywall to 2 inch hole saws. The plastic is nylon glass reinforce. The chuck is all metal with carbide jaws. The brushes are easily replaceable. That drill can do most of the work to build a house and and then some. I have both the 18 and 20 volt versions of this drill. It will break your wrist if you are not braced for a bind. It is a beast made in the US and retailed over $300. It is not a DYI drill.

It looks like the same cells were returned to the battery assy. They must still be holding/taking a charge. But generally, NiCads suck. I never had a NiCad pack last more than a couple of years, even with careful charge-discharge cycles. I trashed all my old cordless tools for newer, Li-Ion powered tools. 4 years now and still on the original batteries.

@@RichardFallstich .. I've had very good luck with Ni-cads ... I'm on my third battery for the model OLDER than the one rebuilt here .. well over 20 years of use ... charge doesn't last near as long but plenty to work with ... I screwed down thousands of 4" long roofing screws 5 years ago .. still using that battery
