I found a positive difference in shifting when I first got the bike and changed the trans fluid, and now I do it routinely. One quart does the trans and the final drive, which is cheap insurance.

That's great to hear--I love when riders step up and do their own maintenance!

It's true that it is best to replace the crush washer, but it's also true that you can often get away with a second use if one isn't available. In any case, if the crush washer "fails" it is unlikely to be catastrophic, you'll just have a drip until you replace it. I keep meaning to find a place to buy them in bulk rather than paying for them one at a time and forgetting to get a new one.

Over the years the specs can change. In my research the 75W/90 is fine for my 2012 model, and I would suggest that unless you live in a very hot climate or regularly run your bike long hours in hot conditions the 75W90 will be fine for you too. I literally just did an annual oil change on my transmission yesterday and the 75W90 looked like new. As for capacity, you must be very careful about the final drive. BMW had issues and gave a technical bulletin specifying 180ml for replacement capacity. This is actually down a little bit from the original spec, I guess because the original would expand too much in the heat and blow out seals. The transmission is just filled until it leaks out the fill hole. It just happens to work out that the total amount of oil between the two is about a quart. This year I bought a cheap plastic syringe to fill the final drive, which worked well and allowed me to accurately measure the 180ml. The final drive oil also looked like new when I changed it.

I've been using aluminum foil but now I fold the foil several times for better strength. It works pretty well.

One of mine fell off while bike was parked in the sun, luckily I found it I also used Jb weld. Maybe I will jb weld On the other side before it falls off!

You know, I'm not even sure what the official guidance is, and there are differences among model years. However, a single quart of gear oil will do both the final drive and the gearbox oil change, so it's cheap to do. Many of us change it annually or every other engine oil change. Cheap insurance.

Yes--gearbox/transmission are the same thing.

Nothing fancy required. I can't recall the exact sizes, but the drain plug just requires a standard wrench and the fill plug is an allen key or socket. Most people will already have the right sizes in their toolbox.

While it's not called for by BMW, I plan on doing it every oil change. I mean, it takes a quart of oil to do both the gearbox and final drive fluid. A few dollars won't make or break me.

tinderboxarts thanks for the reply!i do the same on My boxer cup replica!but you have to be so precise,an the information you get from different Manuel's&internet,is so conflicting,I tend not to do the shaft drive an gearbox oil the same time as the engine!heard so many stories bout blown seals,due to too much oil,an then gearbox,or even shaft drive fails!

Yeah, there are lots of horror stories but I think a lot of owners have little trouble and they just don't talk about it! My feeling is that the worst that can happen from changing fluids too soon is I'll spend a little more in maintenance. No big deal. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

tinderboxarts totally agree!think the big problem is, BMW will not share their knowledge!you try ringing em up here in the UK,an they just tell you to bring it for them to sort out!prob is you need a mortgage to pay for it!!so do it myself,or try too.gearbox failed on my other RT-2005 model!now I'm not sure if that was down to me!an today,my 2013 model slipped out of gear,twice!but went back in!under hard acceleration!strange thing was,it happened at exact same stretch of road!in the exact same place!!!

Hm. That doesn't sound good! Possibly it was just a fluke thing, but best pay attention now. Sometimes a new or different fluid can make a difference in shifting so it can't hurt to change it. But, if it continues you may need a pro to look at it.
