Gearbox/transmission oil change (2007; Peugeot/Citroen BE4R 5-speed manual)

Detailed guide how to change gearbox oil in 1.6HDi Peugeot Partner (same as Citroen Berlingo) with the BE4R 5-speed manual gearbox. This would be probably very similar to other Peugeot/Citroens.

Bolt and washer dimensions:
Gearbox sump bolt: 21mm socket
Gearbox sump bolt washer: copper washer, 22mm OD, 16mm ID, 1mm thickness. I only had crush washer that was ~2.5mm thick, but worked without a problem (amazon UK): amzn.to/33QhbPz or ebay: ebay.us/j4I7Wo
Gearbox sump bolt torque setting I used: 22Nm. 25Nm would also work.
Fill bolt: 19mm socket
Fill bolt washer: aluminium washer, 22mm OD, 14mm ID, 1mm thickness. I only had an aluminium washer with 2mm thickness, but worked without a problem (amazon UK): amzn.to/2qbRLHQ or ebay: ebay.us/bLn5IY
Fill bolt torque setting I used: 22Nm, 25NM would also work.
Th original washers can be re-used, but I prefer a new washer.
The oil started dripping from the level hole at just under 1.9L of Total Transmission Gear 8 oil 75W80. If that is not convenient one can use the breather bolt on top of the transmission.
I used Total Transmission Gear 8 75W80, but that cannot be found anywhere, but these should also work (amazon UK): amzn.to/3NJP6x8 or ebay: ebay.us/CpDkuv
I used this syringe kit to put in the new oil (amazon UK): amzn.to/31E8F1R or ebay: ebay.us/mXZSlw

I changed oil but put the new oil in through the top of the gear box. There is a fill plug just between the air intake and the battery tray. Have to take battery out and remove the tray for better access but once done much easier to fill. 1.9 litres came out as per guide 😗

Hi Stewart, yes, the new oil can be put through the top of the gearbox, but I did not want to remove the battery + tray. I guess it is the same, if you can measure exactly how much oil has come out.

I managed to do it without removing the tray. Very tight but it is possible. Mainly as I couldn't figure out how to remove the tray.

The torques taken out of the service manual - Breather - 17Nm; Fill plug - 22Nm, Drain plug - 35Nm. This is valid for BE4/5 gearbox. Check page 217 for reference.

2007 92bhp HDi 1.6 Partner Multispace: I put car front wheels on ramp tops to level the car on a sloping drive, and then turned steering wheel full to get easy access to the level plug without taking a wheel off. Sump guard needs removal for drain plug. You do not need to use a siphon to inject - I used a length of pipe onto a plastic funnel, and topped up funnel with 150ml each time before raising the funnel up into the wing space so oil moves quickly. Car at 101k, don't think its been replaced before, and was surprised how 'fluid' the oil seemed still. Dirty-ish, but fluid. More worried about rust starting on suspension lower arms!

Yep, that is good advice. I should have used a funnel with hose, but had to fit it somewhere and did not think about it at the end and used my syringe. Yeah, the oil is still quite good, but if one wants to keep the vehicle, it is an easy maintenance thing to do.

Hi Command3r, that's a bit more difficult, but not impossible. One option is if you can give me your VIN number and I can check it for you. The procedure for the automatic transmission oil change is different. Unfortunately I do not have a video for that. Try searching youtube for something for the auto gearbox. It is a bit more complicated, as the filler and the drain is in one plug, kind of.

Hi Ahmad, I always check it with in gear and with engine off. Engine should definitely be off and not running for awhile for the oil to cool down and drop. In or out of gear should not matter.

Hello have you changed a clutch in your partner? I just did it in mine but the clutch pedal works weird now, I can only feel any resistance in the very bottom of the pedal I assume that might be due to air in the system? Mine looks like it's hydraulic but not sure how to check if there is a cable there? Have you ever bleed the system or adjusted the cable if you got one? I have the same car, same year. Cheers mate!

I have not done it, but the brake fluid and the clutch is shared. You would need to bleed the system. If I am not mistaken, there is a clutch bleed valve on the slave cylinder located at the fron of the gearbox. You may need one of those pressure brake bleeding systems. Easier to use and it will expell the air more efficiently.

If you look on the top of the engine, just underneath the oil cooler (aluminium cooler with fins) the slave cylinder bleeding valve is there. You would need one of those clutch hand-held vacuum bleeding systems to put on top of the bleed valve.

@@onionridetv Maybe, not too sure, I have not bled it myself. I suspect it could be done the usual brake bleeding way, press clutch and so on. Worth to try and see if it improves. If it does not, then get one of the hand-held clutch bleeding kits.

Hi voltan, good question. I did not level the car, but it will be more accurate if you level it, i.e. lower the ca slightly. In any case, the difference in the level of the oil in the gearbox due to the raised car will not be that much.

On my 207 1.6 vti there's a whining noise in 3rd, 4th and 5th between 2000 and 3000 RPM so I suppose it's the gearbox. It has done 120 000 km. Do you think an oil change could help?

Hi Shmu'el, it has not done that many km for it to develop a serious problem, so it is a bit undetermined. It's worth a try, although I doubt it will fix the whine, but you never know. The gearbox oil is supposed to be for life, but how do the car manufacturers determine life, 3 years, 5 years..

Yes, warm up engine before hand, it will be easier to flow. I do not think it matters if it is in neutral or in gear, I think I left in neutral.

A mechanic previously changed my transmission fluid and told me should only ever change half of the content. I never asked why. Do you know any reason for this. And if this is correct, should i drain all from the bottom and then pour back half in or should i only try to stop the draining when it is about half. Thanks for the video. Looks simple enough

Hi Jess, I have never heard this one before to replace half of it and I cannot really find a good reason to do it. It is similar to engine oil, you would not keep half of it inside. It will very quickly pollute the new oil. Just drain as much as yuou can and fill through the filler hole till it drips. Safer than trying to gauge where 1/2 is.

From what I read it is valid for automatic transmissions which are sensitive and can get damaged by a flush, but for manual gearboxes inclusive semi autos (robot-clutch) no problem changing the oil.

Because in automatic trans, the old fluid is retaining clutch friction debris. If your clutches are worn, putting new fluid will make clutches slip.

I have to take a look at the gearbox drain bolt because there are some oil drops on the floor everytime I park the car. A mechanic told it could be because of a damaged crankshaft seal but that's not possible on the left side of the engine if I'm not wrong. It might be the gearbox gasket or axle shaft seal?

It could well be gearbox driveshaft seal. They do leak and due to the position it would drip towards the gearbox drain bolt. It is unlikely to be the drain bolt, bt you never know, if you wipe it clean you should be able to see where it drips from, but I bet it is the driveshaft seal.

Hi Azher, I do not really know the mcp auto box. The AL4 is every 30,000 miles. Type of oil is also pretty difficult to know, you have to look into Citroen service maintenance booklet.

@@samsonmtx Yeah, that is a syringe that I used to put the oil inside the gearbox. I should have probably drilled a hole in the oil cap and put the tube inside and put the oil bottle upside down. Probably a lot better than with the syringe.

Why are some people filling from the vent at the top of the gearbox rather than the filler bolt that you use?

Hi Rami, because it is easier, but it is very easy to overfill or be short of liquid inside. People would measure how much was drained and fill the same amount of liquid from the top. The top is just a breather and not filling hole. Say some liquid evaporated during the lifetime of the gearbox, then measuring the amount drained and filling the same amount will be short of what is required.

Plug on the side, always use it to see when it is full. However filling from the top is much easier... Especially much easier than han using that tiny syringe.

How Breather plug (one on the top of gearbox) looks like? should it have a hole or be full closed? Mine was plastic and wit a hole, but I changed it to full brass cap. I don't know if it's ok.

It should have a hole, it is a breather hole, so when the oil gets too hot you get some expansion and potentially oil to escape. The plastic bit is to stop oil spewing around. With a full brass cap, the oil has nowhere to go and will spew oil from the seals.

Good question. The engines are the same, but gearbox is upto Ford. Generally speaking it is the same, but position of drain plugs and filling might be different as well as the quantity of oil. It should be generally speaking the same.

@@MickiSel Is this the top fill plug? These generally are allen key. They do sometimes leak a bit or at least breathe out a bit with the oil getting hot and expanding it has to go somewhere, so they leak a tiny bit.

Pls you said to put the car in gear... Reverse, Neutral or drive? Then after the oil change, do I push the gear back to pack before cracking the engine on?

Reverse, Neutral or Drive would be for automatics, this is for manual gearbox. The in-gear for manual ones, it does not really matter which gear is selected, preferably 1st so when the car is lifted from the front it does not roll backwards. Safety measure is to put blocks on the rear wheels to prevent the car rolling backwards. When I switch off the engine I always put it in 1st or reverse, depending on if I am on a hill. WHen cranking the engine I always have my foot on the clutch in order to ease the spinning of the engine, in this case it does not matter if it is in gear, but for a precaution I have it in neutral, so I do not accidentally release the clutch and the car to lurge forward. Hope this helps.

Good question, they are supposed to be sealed for life or that is what manufacturers tell you. In other words you do not need to replace it, but no one tells you what life is, for the car manufacturers this might be 5 years and even better for them if the gearbox breaks and you buy a new one. Probably 60-80k miles is a good period in my book.

hie,, My car peugeot 3008 1.6 ltr is changing from automatic to manual when driving. it start to show parking brake faulty, abs braking system faulty and then change to manual showing gear box faulty on the dashbord. what will be the problem? there is a friction again when changing gears from 1 to 2 i am suspecting gear box oil needs top up,

As far as I am aware, there is not a user replaceable filter within the gearbox. Maybe I am wrong.

@@oanthinh6013 Depends on your gearbox/car. Mine was ~1.9L. Generally you put the same amount that you have taken out, but if there is a level hole, you pour it in until it leaks out. Depends on the gearbox of course.

Not too sure how much is the oil in the automatic one, but the procedure will be much different. You need the gearbox oil to be in very high temperature and then the fillup will most likely be on top rather than on the side.

@@moremolecules 😁😁😁. I understand. I once did it too but I really did not know I shouldnt. So never did it again. You have the small torque wrench that I also have to buy. I try to tighten all bolts according to right torque settings and need the smaller one for that.

@@alexisamtosta That smaller one is really good and convenient. Some bolts are positioned way too tight and I cannot put anything else in there to tighten them to specification. It has a small head and can be fitted with ease. I also try to do everything by the torque specifications, but some people can do it by hand. I cannot do it, most of the times I would break the bolt and I have done that before as it feels too loose.

@@moremolecules Yes it is handy. Some bolts you can do by hand. Especially when its plastic parts. I also do the spark plugs by hand. Many times bolts just need a snug and thats it.

hello, on a 92hp 1.6HDi berlingo, it is possible to drain and refill the gearbox oil without removing the battery and not removing the left wheel. You have to turn the wheel completely to the left to have the filler cap. oil, lay a flexible pipe with a funnel and fill. 0:15 0:15 I know how to attach the video

I do not think it will be the same thing. Mine is 2007, so much older. Generally it should be the same as long it is manual, but not too certain to be honest

dont know what oil you were useing but it was not gearbox oil,as gearbox oil is red,redish. maybe it was olive oil

Peugeot 3008 1.6 hdi normaly holds 75w80w1.8 litre oil and i put 2.6 litre 80w90w am i in trouble as put 800ml extra oil and seems like oil little thick??? Old oil was thinner then what I put in???

Hi Bahadir, there is something going on here. Did you pour it in through the leveller hole or through the top? if it is through the top, you need to open the leveller hole and let it level on its own. If it was through the level hole, then either it is not 1.8L or the car is not really level. Is the car on a level surface? As for the thickness, how many miles has your car travelled? In general I would not expect to be thinner, but it is a bit of a guesswork.

I did poor it from top. 2500ml the then I check car manuel 1.8 litre. I have been driving 100 mile so far .I only change it couple days ago .I haven’t noticed anything except in the morning when is cold gears are not going in nice as before . Use to be gear changing was nice and soft now very little hard to change.but noise level drop little bit which this was What I am looking for . So Did old check the viscosity difference with my old one and new one I mean looklike Old oil was 5w30 and what poor in thick like 20w 40

@@bahadirdogan6208 You need to undo the leveller bolt and it will drain all the excess fluid. I did not quite understand the viscosity writing. More oil will not be good overall. If you look at the top where you poured it, it will have spilled quite a bit from driving. Definitely open the leveller bolt on the side behind the wheel and let it empty.

Hi my 308 1.6hdi was leaking oil, I thought it was the engine oil but noticed it wasn’t dropping on the dipstick. Now I’m hearing loud grinding/scrapping in 1st and 2nd gears also when idle. Also noise stops when clutch pressed. Would it be due to leaked gear oil?

The clutch noise is simply a noisy clutch, mine does the same. It is not too loud, but still there. You do not really want the gearbox to run on empty, it will disintegrate pretty quickly, of course this will depend on how much oil is left. If I were you I would undo the fill up bolt and top it up and see how much empty it is, better than doing nothing.

@@moremolecules Thanks for replying. I’m going to mechanic soon. He mentioned possible thrust bearing problem too. Probably from leak. I hope I’ve caught it early and not too much damage done. The noise is pretty loud and sounds as if somethings going to break.

@@Joethecatholic This sounds pretty bad, but could it be some sort of loose shield or something. That should not be clutch, but I am not a clutch expert. Hopefully you have caught it early.

@@marchiegalorio5751 Ahh, is this 1.6HDi? The throttle body is just after the intercooler. Should be on the left of the engine, just after the pipes from the intercooler if it is 1.6HDi. If it is a petrol engine, then it is a different position.

Hi james, it will be the same as long as the gearbox is the same (BE4R 5-speed manual). There are several different gearboxes, so it depends what you have.

I've changed the electronics, the lamellas still can't be adjusted! What could be the problem, please thank you

@@bardhylsylejmani606 Most problems with the automatic ones is the oil. It is fairly new the citroen c crossover, so probably better to bring it to the dealer to have a say.

I can't undo the fill bolt it's extremely tight the socket slipped off and has nearly rounded the bolt head

That is rather unfortunate. You have two options, either undo that bolt with some sort of left-hand dril bit or fill the gearbox from the top with a funnel. 1.9L should be OK, unless you measure exactly how much it came out.

Good question, if it is the BE4R 5speed manual gearbox, then it should be the same, although the amount if oil might be different. As far as I know, the position of the two bolts is the same.

@@boakedogawa No, it is for the manual one. Unfortunately I do not really know about the automatic gearbox. I can only assume it is similar, but that is just a guess.

I think that is the automatic AL04 gearbox. That is a completely different procedure. I have one of these in my other car and will eventually do a vido on that, but it is more complex.

@@moremolecules thanks a lot mate Looking forward to that. I looked online and it said the Citroen C3 MK1 (2002-2009) comes in three different gearboxes 1. The manual 5 speed gearbox(the one you have) 2. The automatic 4 speed gearbox 3. The sensodrive 5 speed gearbox (which is semi automatic, or tronic as it is otherwise called) which is my model I'm not sure you have the automatic one or the sensodrive one Anyways thanks a lot for your help!

@ They are all semi-automatic, in other words there is a manual mode that you can switch to and manually change gears. As far as I know and your model/year there is not one with 5 speed auto. Mine is the second model, semi-automatic triptronic Porsche design, but it is 4 speed.

@ Interesting, yes I checked as well, there appears to be 5-speed auto. The procedure for the AL04 and the 5-speed should be the same. One needs to check that the temperature of the oil in the gearbox is between >50C, as far as I remember, and then drain the oil. Then the topup is a bit more difficult with a double screw for the oil drain.

I would pump oil back into the gearbox using a cheap electric oil transfer pump.

That is a good suggestion, but I suspect the pump will burn out. The oil is extremely viscuous and the pump will have very hard time pushing the fluid.

Really mate changing GBX oil at 20k you're wasting your time and money ! It's not like engine oil where the oil is carrying contaminants like water & carbon. In modern industrial maintenance GBX oils are sampled and only changed if found to be out of spec. Oils can remain in constant use for thousands of hours. The sampling is usually looking for metals showing fatigue which leads to failure. If you're having GBX problems then go looking in the oil for contaminants. At regular 20k changes you're just throwing away good oil. If you're going to reuse copper sealing washers anneal them first. ATB Mitch.

I completely agree that GBX oils can be used for thousands of hours, but the "sealed for life" manufacturers claim is ridiculous. Even sitting around would degrade the oil. I also probably would not replace it every 20,000 miles, it is too much of a waste to do it that often, as you have said. Also, how accessible is testing of GBX oil to general consumers, not really that accessible. Yes, for the commercial users is more than useful and done frequently. With the designed obsolescence, probably ~5 years for car manufacturers, I would certainly change it at ~100k miles, as I have done in the video. Even if it is only a piece of mind.

@@vladimirart758 Mine was manual and over 100k miles, so in my book that is time for a change. The automatic gearboxes definitely have a shorter fluid change timeframe. For example, the AL04 in Peugeot/Citroen/Renault definitely need changing. I do not quite remember how frequently

@@vladimirart758 Yes, these have a different procedure of changing the oil fluid, it is very particular to draining and filling up. There is also an ECU counter that counts the number of miles/km that it has passed. On top of my memory I do not quite remember how long, but I think something in the range of ~60,000miles.

Nice video, but there's no need to change gearbox oil, it's simply not subjected to the same stress as engine oil and is an unnecessary expense as the vehicle will be scrapped/sold long before it fails due to the oil alone. The oil is usually clear/amber even at 200-300km the fact that yours is brown/gray says more about the wear condition of your gearbox and driving style then the oil itself.

I agree that it is an additional expense, but I plan on driving the car a few more years. It could be a placebo effect, but it seems like gear changes are a bit smoother after the oil change.

@@weekendwarrior7080 I completely agree with you. Car manufacturers are in the business of selling cars and people are generally pretty poor at maintaining their cars. Lifetime of a car is rather difficult to define and it differs between different entities with rather competing/different interests. There was also a scientific paper on the effect of changing the gearbox oil on fuel consumption, which I started to notice, i.e. better fuel economy with nothing much else changed.

Inside of my 6 speed gearbox after 200k km was not an Oil but a mud. Even after second change Oil was dirty. After Oil change, change of gears are slightly better So i dont know what are you Talking about. Iam changing gearbox Oil always after when i buy new used car and always is better.

The manufacturer says the gearbox is sealed for life. They say no need the change the oil. The life of the gearbox is governed by many things including the oil condition. It’s common sense to change the oil because all oil breaks down over time and parts are wearing over time leaving a metal residue in the gearbox contributing to the breakdown of the gear box. I change my gearbox oil every 50,000 because I like my car and want it to last.
