Very nicely documented. This thing will shift like new. Phooey is a classic reaction - I appreciate that you showed all the attempts to get it together - that is just how it goes sometimes.

You are the only one on youtube with a step by step by step rebuild video for this transmission its been a major help for me thanks.cant wait for a part two there's a guy who stuffed paper towel wads in the shift fork holes to hold the interlock detents in place then slid the shift fork rails in.hope that helps some if your still working on part two .

The transmission is already fully back together. The rods assembly from the bottom to the top really nicely. I've got the video recorded, I just need to finish editing it. I should really do that.

@@Obscuremotorsports Im over here playing connect four with the dam detents is there three large oval detents for the interlock when i took it apart they fell out and i found two i hope thats all of them .
@Obscuremotorsports
@Obscuremotorsports 3 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly there are 3 large oval. 4 balls, and 3 small ovals. The small ovals go through the shafts. The 3 large go in-between the shafts and the balls go in the holes with the springs with the screw caps.

@@Obscuremotorsports hi, a question, in total the transmission have a 5 ball ? On for the washer and four for the forks?
@Obscuremotorsports

@@jeancarlobosano5804 www.davezoffroadperformance.com/store/toyota-transmission-shift-fork.html# hopefully this link helps. The balls are numbered 14. Some go between the bottom two rods. (This is part of the reverse and 1st lockout system) and then 3 up the side and one on top. And then another angled on the side as well I think. So there are like 7 of them. Hope this helps.

Great video. The part at the very end is where I’m struggling. When you slid the hub sleeve and the key came out, what was the solution? Is it just finish putting it together before you put it into gear? My current theory is that’s what I need to do so it’s snug but tbd.

Hey, cool! Smooth job on the video, and the split screen close up is a head above the other guys. BUT! This totally refutes the video "Why you should rebuild your own transmission." Not for me, no skills, not the right tools, and not the right temperament. That leads me to this: How do all the replacement parts cost compare to a remanufactured one with a warranty? I definitely respect anyone who can do this. And that goes double for doing it on video for is. Thank you.
@Obscuremotorsports
@Obscuremotorsports 3 жыл бұрын
The only "right tool" was the press. And you don't have to buy one. If you can find someone that has one, and maybe they can let you borrow it. I'm still a firm believer that you can start with "no skill" and you'll gain it as you go along. Hell, I started college with no skill in engineering and cad software. And after some training I was able to pick up a thing or two. The best thing to make up for the lack of skill is the amount of pictures. That way you don't have to remember anything, It's like you're building your own manual with pictures as you go along. and anything like torque values, or tolerances is gonna be in a table somewhere! As far as the cost comparison: First I had to buy this transmission because my truck originally had an automatic. That was $300. I didn't really care what the condition was because I was rebuilding it. When I was taking it apart I broke the 5th gear so I needed to replace it, that gear was $111.37. The syncro rebuild kit was $189.77. A couple bushings and seals for the shift rod was $21.84. a tube of RTV is like $5.00. So materials cost me $627.98. If you already have the transmission and don't break 5th gear it would cost you $216.61 in material. I also believe that the cost of ones time doesn't play into these things. I'm doing this as a hobby, and for pleasure. This is what I do instead of watch TV, and people don't fret over someones cost of time when they are watching TV. So I'm not going to calculate any of that. Compared to a transmission from say Martin Crawler. they cost ~$1200 before shipping, other options, They have a 1 year warranty, and have a 12 week lead time. So $217 and a ton of experience and your own lifetime warranty vs ~$1200 and you're none the wiser. hope that helped!

It is an R150F, (mostly)! The internals are typical R150f, but the housing is a bit different. I got my synchro kit from www.transmissionpartsdistributors.com/ but there are other sites like marlincrawler and a few others!

This is a fantastic video. I have a 4 speed manual on an 83 stepvan that I need to rebuild or replace. Is there a book or other source you can recommend that goes into more detail? Or do I need to find a manual specific to my transition? Are all transmission basically the same, number of gears being the big difference? So many questions...
@Obscuremotorsports
@Obscuremotorsports Жыл бұрын
I would suggest searching for “1983 step van 4 speed transmission exploded view”. An exploded view is a diagram thats kind of like a lego building manual. Shows what pieces go on what shafts, etc. all manual transmissions are basically the same. A couple shafts. Gears on them. Syncros that connect the gears to the shafts, and shift collars to move everything around. The devil is in the details of where snap-rings, spacers, bearings, and alignment pins are. I recommend taking A LOT of pictures.

Awesome videos man. One thing though, I think what you call 4th gear is actually 1st. 4th is the input shaft I believe but I could be wrong. You should've named your videos "rebuilding a R150F" or something with R150F in it. your views would be way more I bet. Again. Great detailed videos, I learned a lot.

You are correct. The larger the diameter the gear is on the main shaft, the lower the ratio.
