I'm very fortunate to own my dream car (15' Evo X GSR). I hope the car treats you well while you own and drive it! Excited to see it get some overdue TLC. I think we forget that cars aren't made to last forever and it takes a lot of maintenance and work to keep them nice. As for myself, I plan to keep mine till the day I die. The setup has proven to be reliable. I wouldn't change much depending on what rpm it spools at.
@stephen3164
@stephen3164 Жыл бұрын
I think he said over 5000rpm before turbo comes on, which is stupid. Large turbos can give a large punch but take forever to spool and then you only have that high hp for a very brief time. Small turbos kick in early so the car feels fast at lower rpms but then falls on its face at higher rpm. So the answer is a medium sized turbo that comes on at 3200 rpm or so. But the real answer is sequential twin turbo setup: small turbo at lower rpms and big turbo kicks in when small snail is giving up.

@@Jamxknife - he stated the turbo was too big and took too long to spool up. I’m always more impressed by the “area under the power curve” than the peak hp number it briefly hits. It might be a medium sized turbo to use on a 6 liter LS, but could be too big for that 4-banger. Big turbos are great for drag racing, when you can sit there and spool it up before the light goes green, but not so great for street driving.
@Jamxknife
@Jamxknife Жыл бұрын
@@stephen3164 You could put a smaller AR on the turbo, mivec back, and the right sized cam and it will be fine. The turbo can probably make another 50whp at best, it's damn near maxed out.

People give the X a lot of crap for not having a 4G and being heavier than their previous generations-but they are still incredibly capable cars. The 4B11 responds so well to bolt ons and the cars set up correctly can be competitive and very quick. I have a 2015 X that has taken home plenty of autocross trophies, and a 2008 X that has also claimed lots of ice racing trophies. These cars are awesome!! Yes they might not have the best interior (these things can be improved, and realistically isn’t the reason you buy an EVO lol) but they have decent creature comforts. I road trip my 2015 regularly 15 hours one way and it’s great. I’d clean the car up, get some good tires and brake pads and enjoy it. This car’s style isn’t really my taste with the widebody (although it looks decent!) but I’d ditch the wing and go back to OEM, remove the canards, either paint the hood/trunk or replace with OEM and also remove that fake splitter personally. Can you tell I like OEM? I think the 500whp range (my 2015 makes 470whp with a stock like response turbo) is the best power level for this cars to race and street drive. Lots of awesome turbos on the market for this car. Have fun Ben! Will be interesting to see what you do with it.

If you want something quicker spooling I highly recommend a Gen 2 Garrett GTX3576 or GTX3076. They are one of the most popular setups for these cars for a good reason. They give you a super fun power band without being overly laggy. I made just over 500hp on 93 with my stock block 3576 powered X. With a built motor your could really push early torque delivery and make a beast of a car.

I'd say that you should "right-size" the turbo to increase reliability and probably restore that sub-system that's been deleted. Re-tune for a better power band and usable power/torque below 5000 RPM. I know engine management technology and equipment must evolve rapidly so the 6 or 7 year old system might be ripe for an update/upgrade. Look into a more conservative wing (probably more of a spoiler than a wing). Correct the splitter droop whether that means replacement, removal, or whatever. I like the wide body kit and I'd be a disappointed to see it go. New headlights. Your usual deep and enthusiastic clean and detailing, I'm excited to see what you do with it! While there are two Evos in the fleet some Evo-centric videos seem like an obvious and entertaining idea. Compare and contrast modding strategies, race for lap times, etc.

Very true man, especially on a track attack use. This should be a quick responsive as possible in order to shave time and gain more speeds. Power alone is useless if it ain't responsive in the first place plus if you can't handle the car to its maximum limits and plus, u should be able to put the power to the ground smoothly by having the right amount of power with a proper tune and installing a decent size turbo (as what you've said earlier) so that you won't lose traction.

Honestly seeing all the reactions was so cool, can’t wait to see what you do to this. Perfect little nostalgia trip to touch roots on where you’s came from!

Fix it up and rip it! But don't lose your roots. So many subie guys buying evos lately. I get wanting to switch to the dark side but you have some awesome subie content. I actually plan on following your sti motor build when mine finally decides its had enough. But in all honesty it is exciting and I'm pumped to see what you do with it!!

My suggestion for that to do would be get rid of the AWD and go drifting with it, from what I've seen Evo 10's can slide really well when rwd, and it would be really cool to see you drifting

Don’t take anything away from the car, restore it how it is and make it more drivable. It would be a challenge but worth it. The car looks sick.

Get some seat time with it! Learning the differences between how an Evo and an STi drive was really cool. Different cars with different purposes and different approaches to the same problem. Best of luck with your new money pit! 😂

Man do exactly what you said you're gonna do. Fine tune the drivetrain to make it drive better and easier, and fix the cosmetic stuff. I love the way the car looks, just sounds like someone was trying to go crazy with power and didn't know what they were doing.

@gearsandgasoline - you should update it with ‘current’ turbo, ecu and tuning - still aiming to make the same peak power, but with modern G series turbo, ecu and mivec etc… showing how far modern stuff has evolved even over the last 5 years. It will show how you can now start to minimise the compromise of power and drivability 😎

Fix all the larger cosmetic imperfections, powdercoat/polish the wheels, repair any mechanical issues, try to save the carbon pieces by sanding them down and re-clearing them (worst case paint match them), G25-550/G35-660 for a quicker spool, 2500-3500rpm, making it more practical while still maintaining 600+whp. By using a smaller turbo and turning the power down a little, maintenance intervals lengthen again making the car a touch more practical. Super cool ride, can't wait to see what you decide to do with it.

I think you should keep the widebody, but - if it's not already - make it fully functional. Basically do with it what you would do with Mia if you were allowed to widebody her, but keep it set up for the street. Kind of like G&G does RWB, but Evo.

G30/660 comparison between the EJ257 and 4B11T! 2.5 Boxer vs 2.0 I4 with identical turbos and exhaust housings if possible. probably have to get that Mivec working for a fair comparison with the Subaru. Otherwise dip the toe into the 1/2 mile/airstrip racing world with the EVO -long gears -peaky turbo and engine set up -going 150+ mph -rolling start or soft launch whats not to love? cool purchase, wish i could get an evo 8 to sit side by side with my 05 STI

I vote do what you mentioned in the video. Clean it up, enjoy it for a bit, then sell it. But keep the body as is. It’s kinda iconic for your channel like that.

Honestly, would be insane and so incredible if some how, Brian could get his car back. His face when he was sitting in it resonated so hard with me. I know exactly how he felt, letting go of a dream car, only to know you'll never have the opportunity to get it back.

keep the build restore it, and maybe get it detuned a little bit with the turbo that it spools earlier, or even go for a double setup, so it'll be a fun daily for someone else! :D

A car with a personal connection is always the best car. As far as what to do with it? Simple exterior restoration, if any changes… swap the wheels for something monoblock like a set of gram lights. Then under the hood focus on making it more useable… reinstall the mivec hardware and a turbo that’s snappier but that will produce 90% of the current power. Oh… and depending on the clutch situation, and how much energy you want to put into it… swapping out for an organic twin disc would really make the thing a peach to drive. That is such a cool build and crazy to see it’s still alive after these years. It’s sad it’s such a rarity for built cars to make it a few years let alone even a few months before being ruined or totaled.

Just put back the mivec control, it does amazing things - my 850whp Evo X still runs it no issues. Consider an Xshift sequential to replace the gearbox, affordable and reliable and fast :)
