I believe the longer you use knives the more you learn larger ones are not as handy a small little ones. If your job requires using a knife all day; you will be using the size and shape best used for your job. It is not going to be a GEC or any other kind of recreational knife. Large ones might be carried by tradesmen; but even then they only need them occasionally and seldom use them constantly. The knife you use the most is a Utility knife or Stanley knife that uses replacement blades. I just saw one like you bought online; it had stag covers and was priced at $150.00 dollars. Collectors are looking for knives that increase in value and be sold for more. Little knives that cost a lot are less desirable. Fewer people want to pay a lot for such small ones. Sometimes that is mistake because the most sought after ones are ones that have smaller production runs. I have field dressed all sizes of animals using a knife no bigger than this one. I caped out a 200 pound deer using two little Gerber 200 knives they don’t make any more just to see if I could. The blade is barely inch and half long. I used a meat saw to take apart the body. You needed bigger knives for cutting the meat into portions; but that is what butcher knives are for. I think you bought a beautiful little knife and likely will keep this one forever. I have quite a few little ones too and enjoy them as much as big ones.

Have all six variants. Bought them so my grandsons could make a tidy penny on 2035 E-Bay. Then I discovered how absolutely useful..apart from beautifully made... they really are alone or as companions to larger slip joints. Sorry kids...they’re now users. Two dozen G.E.C.’s and counting are never enough...I think we all need deep therapy. On the other hand it’s a fun...if financially exhausting way to get through this pesky pandemic.

Sally’s a kind soul dealing with an old man’s ego! The baby canoe is a great suit pocket knife. When I’m in the office (yes I can still remember what my office looks like) I need no more than this. Opening a letter or a sealed packet is as hard as it gets.

"It's a knife. It cuts things." I don't know if I can handle such controversy. But yes, there's nothing wrong with a smaller knife. Does it do the job you need one? Then it's big enough. And this one is a real beauty.

That's about the size of knives I pocket carried for 20 years as a teacher. It came out more often than you would think. I had a wood covered, a white bone covered a Swiss Army red, and an all stainless one through the yrears and only once did a student become concerned. This was the same student who did not like me carrying my fixed blade river rescue knife on my PFD either (teaching river canoeing) so no real concern there. I did explain why I was wearing it (still do) as running rivers can and will invite surprises. Lately I have been carrying a 74mm (2.87 inch) Cattaraugus yellow pearl pen knife. Not a lot of snap left but plenty of bite. (Like us Paddy) LOL

Those GEC #19 Rattlers are great little knives. I managed to pick up several in different covers. They're incredibly useful little knives for around the house tasks.

My grandfather taught me about knifes. He carried three different types of knifes every day. I carried four myself. Nice video also.

I've had my Little Rattler in smooth white bone for about a month now and I absolutely love it. A tradesman wouldn't take it to a construction site but it's absolutely perfect as a gentleman's knife in a typical office setting.

It sure is a small knife, but that Wharncliffe wins it extra points. I like little knives. I use my small toothpick knives to dig out junk from bigger knives, clean my fingernails, open letters, basically anything that can be cut with a small knife. Small knives are also perfect for when someone asks to borrow your knife. I wouldn't loan out that number 19 though. 😄

Oh, and I have a scar on the inside of my left thumb from a little, barely over an inch blade, Rough Ryder. You would be surprised what a little knife can do to you. I bled all over the place until I got my Superglue tube out.

I know this is an older video but I just picked up a Little Rattler myself and had to see your take. Honestly Paddy I feel like you and I have discovered one of the best kept secrets in the knife world: small knives. I've loved small knives for quite some time and have owned and carried GEC 25s, 18s, and Case Tiny Trapper, Baby Butterbean, and the Mini Copperhead. I always enjoyed them but considered them like an emergency backup.... until I went to work one day at a fairly knife-centric job and forgot my main EDC at home and ended up using my GEC 25 all day and, to my surprise, it did everything I needed a knife for. without a problem. I think a lot of people are carrying WAY more knife than they need and don't realize it, save for certain select professions... or just pure personal preferences. Anyway, since that day, I've carried small knives more and more as my main EDC rather than just a backup and it's been eye opening. Also, one of the best features of a small knife, especially a traditional, is they're like completely covert; no one bats an eye or gives a hoot if I pull out a little traditional to cut something, regardless of my surroundings. Hell I accidentally went to go in a museum in Washington DC with my GEC Beagle in my pocket, which they found and is not allowed, but they said "just don't take it out of your pocket until you leave" and let me in with it.

Thanks Paddy, a brilliant video, very well explained and informative, I am a small knife man, I had to get a notebook out and make a list of all the knives you mentioned, to look them all up later, as they are all great looking wee knives. I always carry some sort of small knife, my favourites at the minute are, a 4 bladed Schrade 440 TY steel or a peanut knife by C.Platte and sons, which I have had for over 20 years. Thanks again Take care Sam

People buy what they enjoy holding in their hands. That being said, people have different size hands, different ideas of what beauty is; knife beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It's a pretty knife for sure :) Take care amigo :)

That's a gorgeous little GEC. I'm right there with ya on the utility of smaller knife patterns. I break down a lot of cardboard and cut a fair amount of pallet straps at work. Having more knives than I'll ever need, I rotate daily. Little guys like the Spyderco Dragonfly 2, Kizer Feist, Brother Cowfish, CJRB Ria end up in my pocket pretty regularly. As far as traditionals go, I'm finally coming around. Your enthusiasm has worn down my resistance to non lockers. Thanks for sharing 🔪👍🗡

Great video Paddy. I happened to carry a Case Butterbean (mini canoe) today. I love a small knife as long as it's well built. Your #19 looks fantastic - not too small for me! And the abalone on that #38..WOW thanks for the video

Carried my Little Rattler (the wood covered version) today too. It’s such a fantastic little knife. And I totally share the small knife love overall. One of my most hard used knifes (and I suspect this is true for many people) is a replaceable blade utility knife and those don’t have much cutting edge either. You don’t need a 4-5” blade for most tasks. Do I have bigger knives and do I love them too? Absolutely but you don’t need one everyday.

Couldn't agree more Paddy! I went for the same covers as you. Mine arrived today and the depth of colour and the texture in the bone are gorgeous. Enjoy! ATB

Like the Abalone knife, that is as small a knife I would carry, the Case nice and the 25 Pattern, used to carry a small lockback before they were outlawed, mind I have to admit tyhe Little rattler is a beauty.

To me it seems it would even take more time and work for the precision finish they use to make such a beautyfull little knife. The blue is nice dark, copper liners with not a hairwidth of gapping. It is a very beautyfull knife. May I ask how you clean those little beauties? From time to time they get a little gritty and dirty and i find it difficult to get them cleaned easy, any advice on that? I think I use my little knives as much as the big working knives, size doesn"t matter quality does. Have a nice weekend and all the best from a fan from the Netherlands.

Lickle Knives. Nothing wrong with them Paddy, nothing at all, but I passed on this release all the same - I've a #06 and a #18, both similar in size to the #19, and nice though they are I generally prefer something a size or two bigger. Like you, I only really want knives I think I'm going to carry/use, but unlike you I never carry more than one knife. That abalone #38 of yours is something else... And the #25's not exactly hideous either...

Sorry paddy but not fir me. Don't get me wrong I don't mind small knives but this one just looks far too delicate and it looks like the tip could break off far too easily. I know you said it was under £100,but I dare say it wasn't far off that
