Here's my review of an oft overlooked member of the Great Eastern Cutlery family, the #66 Calf Roper. Vastly overshadowed by the famous #15 Huckleberry Boy's Knife in the small 2-bladed jack segment, the Calf Roper has some differences and some advantages versus the Huck knife. With near flush blade tangs, the absence of half stops and a very robustly constructed frame, the Calf Roper might be more of a connoisseur's knife. Watch to see why...

Actually, the 66 is a very popular GEC knife.......it's just not "as popular" as the 15. I love both, but I'm a guy that likes variety in my knives, whether for EDC, and especially collecting. Another fabulous pattern off the 66 frame is their "Mink Skinner", which is a muskrat with 2 sweet muskrat clips pivoting from each end. They are my favorite with this frame. Ya get TWO nice full sized muskrat clips, but it is actually more comfortable in hand, because those muskrat clips ride incredibly low in the frame with no blade back corner at all to grab ya, as they are at opposing ends. You can't even feel the opposing blade when handling the knife. It is also a 2 backspring knife. If you ever get a chance to pick one up, GO FOR IT. You will be glad you did, I promise! GREAT video of an awesome frame by GEC !!! CONGRATS!!! :-)

Small frame traditionals speak to me and the #66, #15 & #71 are winning classics. The contrast of the smooth ebony and bolster look fantastic. Tuxedo knife possibly? I'd say the Calf Roper or the Mnandi would fill that role nicely : )

Great video. I will make a return trip just to see the comments as they should be interesting in their own right. This is still just a keen interest so far Rob, but you might make a sicko out me yet. :) They're fantastic knives.

That bite from the second blade in the "jacknife" pattern...eliminated by the evolution of the "canoe" pattern.

I got the Calf Roper in the Northfield trim with pinched and fluted bolster and cap. I like it a lot. What do you think about the Calf Roper Slim? There still some limited models left. But I'm a little bit concerned about possible blade rub.

Claus-L. Müller Hey Claus! I have 2 of the Calf Roper Slim's. I like them, but not quite as much as the standard 2 spring versions. The blades are quite a bit thinner too. Great little slicers, but not as heavy duty. I don't think mine have blade rub, but I'm sure they could if a fella opens the blades more aggressively. If I had to pick between the 2 styles, I prefer the standard Calf Roper. It's a tougher knife vs the Slim.

I have the "slim" and there is a little rub, but you are going to get that in such a slim knife with two blades on a single spring. On the up side the blades are thinner and they cut like a laser!

I have to say I like the 68 pony jack better than the 15. As much as I want to love the 15 it's just to narrow at the pivot for my liking. The 66 is one I really want to try so thanks I have to add another one to the list!

My #66 is not very smooth either. A similar knife to consider is the #68 Pony Jack. I don't have one, but I do know that my #68 White Owl is the smoothest and snappiest GEC in my collection.

Very nice knives. Shame he had to push the middle eastern cult of Christianity at the end though.
