Wow! After listening to this video, I was able to re-create my Dad's dna to a 3527.3 cM level! I'm blown away at how amazing this tool will be when I can use the one-to-many comparison. Been looking for my paternal grandfather for 25+ years. Thank you Andy!

@@kikihelland7739 Kiki, so sorry to be so long in replying but I just saw this yesterday. As I recall, the first thing I did was select all the matches that matched me. There was a way to do that without having to click on each one but I can't remember right now. It made it very easy. Then when I selected them to visualize, I clicked on the Lazarus tool. So get your matches firs, then Lazarus and then your sibling and 1st cousins on the opposite side of your person you're trying to raise from the dead! I used my maternal 1st cousin, since my Mom was passed too. Hope this helps.

I'm concerned about the increase in false matches that you mentioned (due to the mono/merged/single allele aspect of a Lazarus kit). Did you look into how much of an issue that is? It would be interesting to know whether that's more theoretical problem or practical.

Andy, I've been working on a Lazarus kit for my mother. I created 1 starter kit in September and created 3 kits recently as I added more cousins I identified at Gedmatch. I noticed that every time I added more distant cousins to the kit the ratio of single-allele SNPs to double-allele SNPs changed. Each additional cousin I gained more double-allele SNPs BUT lost single-allele SNPs.

2020-10-12 76069 single allele SNPs were derived for the resulting kit. 353138 bi-allelic SNPs were derived for the resulting kit. 429207 total SNPs were derived for the resulting kit. 2923.5 total cm's were derived for the resulting kit. 2020-12-24 75825 single allele SNPs were derived for the resulting kit. 360211 bi-allelic SNPs were derived for the resulting kit. 2020-12-25 74663 single allele SNPs were derived for the resulting kit. 361428 bi-allelic SNPs were derived for the resulting kit. 2020-12-26 74490 single allele SNPs were derived for the resulting kit. 362056 bi-allelic SNPs were derived for the resulting kit. 436546 total SNPs were derived for the resulting kit. 2971.1 total cm's were derived for the resulting kit.

@@LanceHall That makes sense. Think of single alleles as a bi-allele with half the data missing (i.e. T--?). Then when you add more input data, the other half gets filled in for some of them (i.e. T--G).

Yes, this is actually what you want. More bi-allelic SNPs = better Lazarus kit (just remember that it is not going to get anywhere close to an actual kit, but something can be better than nothing).

Hello, good explanation of Lazarus tool. I want to create the Lazarus kit for my grandfather. I have both of his kids DNA kits and could add my siblings. I would not have a spouse kit. Would this work?

If you have your grandfather's children (including your parent) there is no need to add you or your siblings. What you need is his siblings (or their children) to help make an effective kit.

Have you tried to create your father's dna kit using any other methods ? Joel Hartley dna blog went into details using excel and access using his mother and siblings kits. Borland Genetics is supposed to do this. Would doing visual phasing and creating file to use. Possibly use dna painter or dnagenics to create a file that could be used in this process.

Thank you for this video, excellent and informative as usual! I'm curious if you have tried the following or if you think the logic is sound. I made a Lazarus kit for my deceased father but now want to make it better. A few years ago I tested my Mother, paternal aunt, myself and two sisters at Living DNA (Illumina's new Global Screening Array - GSA chip) and FTDNA (Illumina's old OmniExpress chip). Using old and new Illumina chip results, if I made a SuperKit for each of us then used the SuperKits to build Dad's Lazarus file I'm hoping to get a lot more cMs/segments. I understand both chips test about 700,000 SNPs with less than 25% overlap so a SuperKit using both chips should contain over 1,000,000 unique SNPs which should improve matching for all five of us PLUS Dad's Lazarus kit created from our five SuperKits. Dad's current Lazarus kit does not perform nearly as well as his sister's and I suppose his Super Lazarus kit still won't perform as well as her SuperKit but it should be closer to him, a lot more SNPs. His current Lazarus kit was created from our OmniExpress chips.

The problem with your logic is that GEDmatch's database is based on the FTDNA OmniExpress chip and the 23andMe OmniExpress v3 chip. Combined there are only about 980,000 SNPs that are looked at. See my videos on Superkits. Yes, if you create your own outside of GEDmatch you will have 1.5 million SNPs, but creating it in GEDmatch or uploading it to GEDmatch you will get less than 980K

For the reconstruction of both parents, Lazarus software should have the option to exchange the group zero and group two numbers, making it ease for the reconstruction of both parents DNA, but anyway thank you for the wonderful program.

This is exciting stuff! I’ve been climbing my family tree for decades but I’m just discovering gen match. Three questions. 1) How long does it take from when I upload my data until I get information returned? 2) I have both AncestryDNA and 23andMe. Should I submit both? 3) Which of the commercially available testing companies get better results from gen match? If I can convince my siblings to participate, I’d like to get the best results. Thanks!

Not long. Yes submit both The tests are about equal in getting DNA match results. It all depends on who tests and who migrates their DNA to GEDmatch

I want to create a Lazarus kit for my mother. I got my father's DNA before he died, but my mother died 20 years ago so I don't have hers. I also have mine and my sister's. No other family members on my mother's side have done DNA tests, so I wouldn't have anything to put into group 2. Can I still get a useful amount of information from just that? And how would I find unknown relatives to put into group 2, given that I don't have my mother's DNA to compare them with? I mean, how can I tell if there are people on Gedmatch who match the DNA my sister and I have inherited from our mother rather than our father so I could include them in group 2?

Thanks for this. My mom and three siblings have tested. My dad had a y-DNA test only, not useful for this. I was able to make a simulated kit for Dad. Other than my siblings, my closest matches on Dad's side are 3rd cousins. I entered the top 100 kits that match me but not my mom (along with Mom and siblings in respective groups). 60 cousin kits weren't enough to meet the 1500 cM minimum for full processing.

I am trying to produce a Lazarus kit for my mother & father, I have 3 full siblings and 3 of us have tested. There is a unique situation where my father & his full brother married my mother & her full sister. My father produced 2 half-siblings for me with 2 different women. His brother produced 1 son, not of my aunt and a daughter with my aunt who is my double cousin( she died) but her son is also my double cousin once removed, could I use him in replacement of my full sibling that will not test? By the way, I keep trying to get a better kit but my mother's first kit is 3,634.9 What is the measurement of an actual kit 7,000? 5,000? 4,000? So I should not use descendants in which group?

Thanks for your videos, Andy. I have DNA from my mother & her 2 sisters & want to recreate my grandparents' DNA. Do I add them all in + as many other relatives as I can find from the maternal side, choose Female, & run it, & then do the same for my grandfather's side but choose Male? I won't get 2 kits that are extremely similar? Thanks.

What you also need is DNA from cousins on your grandfather's side and cousins on your grandmothers side. It is these cousins DNA that is matched with your mom and her two sisters to create a grandmother and a grandfather kit. Choosing Male of Female will just tell the kit to have one X or two X chromosomes.

I want to create father's kit. I have mother and their 3 children tested and nieces and nephews of father. I have numerous kits for these people. So ancestry-chip 1 and 2, 23andme-chip 3 and 5, familytreedna-2 different chips, myheritage, livingdna-chip 1. for spouse should I create one kit for all the tests she has or enter all for spouse individually. likewise for children and nieces and nephews, create 1 kit for all the tests for each person or enter all the dna tests that are available individually.

I've been having great results using the Lazarus Tool. One problem I can't find an answer to is this: What does "Matchy - too many matches" mean? On a couple of the kits, this error message appears under Status Value, where "Good" is the usual Status Value. The result is that the kits act as if they were run with no batch processing, but they were, and the icon on the main page confirms that. Thank you. I appreciate all you do.

"Matchy - too many matches" means there is not a lot of information (i.e. poor kit) and so too many matches are appearing that are statistically unlikely.

I had trouble downloading my kits on to GED match with my tablet. Does GED match require a larger device like a Laptop 💻 or a Table Top computer 🖥 ? 🤔

I create a Lazarus Kit fro my great grandfather using the Lazarus kit I created for his son. How reliable is this the kit for my for my great grandfather, please?

First, these kits are better than nothing, but not very reliable. Second, to make it work, you need to have to have descendants of the GGfather and folks who are his relatives but not his descendants.. The same goes for his son. When you have the kits, you have a tool that is helpful but not 100% accurate.

I have an issue. I would like to recreate my Grandparents DNA. I only have DNA sample of their 2 daughters and myself (grandchild), to do this. after watching this video I realized i can not put any kit# in group2. Is it still possible to recreate a DNA profile for Each of my grandparents?

It can't be done without some known matches. Good luck

I am curious the difference between this approach and a more direct approach. If I have my mother's autosomal results and my siblings (as you showed) why would I not want to just see down to the individual locus and say well my mom has a C and T here and I have a C and G therefore I know I got a G from my father and since my sibling has a G and another G he (my father) must have been GG here? Why look at segments for persistent strands when you may well have all the information you need to precisely determine many locations of the Lazarus kit?

Because your father may not have been GG. All you know from your siblings is that he had 1 G. Besides for a SNP, there is likely only 2 letters possible. So if your mom was CT, then the possibilities are CC, CT, and TT. You wouldn't be CG except in extremely rare circumstances (like maybe 5 out of the 600,000 tested could possibly look like this).

I want to recreate my great-grandfather's DNA. He was adopted. My grandfather (his son) has taken a DNA test, which is on GEDmatch, but my grandfather's sister has long been deceased, so no DNA for her (and none of her children or grandchildren have tested). My great-grandmother (GGF's wife) has also long been deceased, but my dad's 2nd cousin from GGM's side has tested and her test is on GEDmatch, but hers is the closest relation to put there. I'm sure if I dug more, I'd find more DNA matches from that side, but they would be fairly distant. We DO know who my GGF's birth mother was (birth certificate and DNA has proved this), but the DNA matches my grandfather has with that side do not have their DNA on GEDmatch (again, only option would be very distant relatives). We also figured out the family that my GGF's birth father came from (we narrowed it down to two brothers, but none of their descendants have tested). The only option for that would be very distant matches that are on GEDmatch. Is this even possible to create any kind of meaningful kit for my great-grandfather?

Unfortunately, from what you describe, no. You need more close relatives.

First of all thank you so much for all your interesting videos! I am searching for relatives of my unknown maternal grandfather. My mother is deceased and I do not have her DNA. All I have is my father's, my own and my mother's half sister's DNA-tests. There are no other relatives. My closest matches, when excluding those that also match with my dad or my "half-aunt", are 4th. or 5th. cousines with most matching sequences being only 7-15 cM. Would that be sufficient to make my mothers Lazarus if I just add enought of them? About how many would I need? Can the Lazarus-kit be transferred to search for my mother's (and my unknown grandfather's) DNA-matches on e.g. MyHeritage, Geni etc.? I also wonder, my "half-aunt" and I only share 7,4% (527,6‎ cM) DNA in 17 sequences, the longest being 73,5‎ cM (myHeritage DNA kits). I would have expected us to share more than that? I also find it a bit strange that my half-aunt and my dad have so many more matches than me (myHeritage), resp. 9.300 for my half-aunt (64), 7.600 for my dad (81) and myself only 6.500 (58)? My dad is 100% Scandinavian, my "half-aunt" 92% Scandinavian, 5% Finnish and a bit Irish/Scottish/Welsh, while my ethnicity is 80% Scandinavian, 14% East-European, and a bit South-East European, Ashkenazi and Minor Asia. Would Ancestry be a better place/valuable addition for my search for matches for DNA from my mother/grandfather than MyHeritage, FamilyTreeDNA, Geni and GedMatch? Thank you so much! :-)

You will be able to create something (you are going to need a lot of extra matches. Unfortunately, you cannot download the Lazarus kit and use it on other sites.

I want to create a kit for father. Have multiple kits for spouse, their children and nieces and nephews. By multiple have single or different chips at ancestry, 23andme, familytreedna, myheritage, livingdna. some websites changed their dna chips and have tested on both sometimes. Should I just enter in each test done for spouse or create a super kit by combining all the ones for spouse and then just enter that kit number. The same for their children and nieces and nephews. For the nieces and nephews, their parents are not tested. Should I try to create their parent that is the sibling of the father or not bother with that and enter in the multiple tests for nieces and nephews. have tests for children of 3 siblings of father.

What is the difference between the Lazarus kit and the phased parental kit? Practically, which of them is more reliable, and how should I work with these two synthetic kits?

Phased parental kit - which means you have the parents DNA, so just use the parents kit. Lazarus is for when you don't have the DNA.

You will have to give whoever you want to look at it the kit number. By default Lazarus kits are research only.

How do I add more than 23 kits to group 2? I have only 23 places to add my kit numbers. Also, will it mess things up if I add a kit to group 2 that turns out to be connected to the spouse of the individual that I am trying to recreate?

put all the people you want in a tag group then fill then into the Lazarus using the mka tool.you can put in thousands of people into group 2 that way.

Is this the only way to assess the DNA of those who can't/won't be tested for geneology? Can blood or tissue samples be tested? Like locks of hair or umbilical cord from baby book? Sperm bank samples? Blood bank samples? Could their DNA be on file in hospitals from previous medical tests? What if it's a common practice in your culture to rebury a body once mostly bones are left? Could some sort of sample be taken then?

Legally, ethically, and in a cost effective manner, yes. If however someone has no morals and lots of money then as you pointed out, there are other ways.

Hi. I tried to create a Lazarus kit for my deceased mother. The resulting kit had 310,700 singles, and 85,789 bis, for a total of 396,489 SNPs. I forgot to check the cMs. In this kit, I put my daughter in group 2 by mistake, and I mistyped one kit. I ran another kit for my mother and took out my daughter and corrected the mistyped kit, and I was able to add ten more kits for a total of 110. The results of the second analysis were 226,787 singles, 61, 494 bis for a total of 288,281 SNPs. The total number of cMs in the second kit was 1909.8. I did a one-to-one with myself and my sister to see how many shared cMs there were. Comparison with my kit resulted in 2318.53 cMs, largest segment 169.92 Comparison with my sister's kit resulted in 1335.49 cMs, largest segment 102.5 I'm surprised by these results. I wonder why the big discrepancy between my sister and me. What do you think? Is this Lazarus kit useful? Also, if I went back through all the matching kits I used in group 2 and made sure they were all matches with the highest amount of DNA shared with me, or ran my sister's matches and my own and made sure to include all our common matches and the highest of the matches we don't actually share, would that increase the number of cMs in the Lazarus kit? Originally, I just chose matches I didn't have in common with my dad. Should I eliminate matches that did not actually show shared segments in the Lazarus analysis?

Since you have your sister and your yourself, try this. Phase your kit and your sister's kit using your dad's DNA. Put your dad in group 0. Put the maternal phased kits for you and your sister in both group 1 and 2. This should create a Lazarus kit for your mom that is about 75% accurate.

@@FamilyHistoryFanatics You were right. I did as you said, and the results were 441804 single allele 47005 bi-allelic 488809 total SNPs Total cMs 2885.3 It took a long time. One question: I noticed that some of the kits I used in part 2 did not show matching segments. Is that okay? Should I bother revising the list? I am thinking it won't alter anything, and the Lazarus kit looks substantial at 2885 cMs. About 3/4 as you predicted! Thank you very much for replying.

Lazarus isn't a DNA test. You upload DNA tests from genetic genealogy companies to GEDmatch. Thus, you'll need the DNA from living persons.

Yes. The spouse kit can be the spouse or any other relative of the spouse that is not related to the target.

The problem is, you probably don't know which side of the family your parent's matches are on, so you don't know who to put in your paternal grandfather's group 2, for example, because they might match your father on his mother's side. There is one trick you can use to find a few of your paternal grandmother's relatives... look at your father's X-chromosome matches. But other than that, you have to work out the hard way which side some of your relatives are on before you can Lazarus the grandparents.

I used this to recreate my dad's DNA, who died in 2007. The Lazarus tool used mainly my DNA, his brother's DNA and some from a 161 cM cousin to give me 1964.6 total cM's. Is that a good result? Said it had to be above 1500 to do batch processing. Thanks!

I do not have DNA for either my father or mother. I have three sisters and their DNA and I have DNA from two maternal cousins and my mother's first cousin. If I can make a Lazarus kit for my mother, can I use her Lazarus kit for Group 0 while trying to make a kit for my father?

I would never use a Lazarus kit to make another Lazarus kit. The best Lazarus kit doesn't have much information, so using it as an input will decrease the usefulness of the resulting Lazarus kit even further.

With Lazarus, you might not be able to do this. However, the point of the Lazarus tool would be to try to capture more DNA matches. Have you considered Visual Phasing? You can do that with the half-siblings. Check out this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fdyEhqt93M3doYU.html

You don't need GEDmatch or the Lazarus tool to solve for your biological father. You can use genetic genealogy from your matches that are not on your mother's side. If you have, say, a paternal 2nd cousin, you would have the same great-grandparents. You will need to create trees for your paternal matches to figure that out. Then work downward from there. What DNA test did you use? AncestryDNA is easier for creating trees than the other sites.

Fascinating! Never heard of Lazarus before. I have spent several years searching for my paternal grandfather. My dad is tested in all the sites and I made a superkit for him in Gedmatch. His mom died years before I knew about dna testing, BUT *her* sister, dad's maternal aunt, is tested (and her daughter, dad's 1C). My sis and I are tested. Two of my sons are tested . Dad's maternal half sister is tested. We have an approx 1C1R dna match, G, of my dad in Germany (403cM) who is likely a 1C of the unknown father. Then there is G's daughter and grandson. Those 3 are only on MyH yet, but I will ask them to upload to Gedmatch. Are these good candidates for a Lazarus kit for my unknown grandfather? Is my dad's maternal half sis' kit of value? Dad also has dna matches on Ancestry that we are sure are related to G. I will ask them to upload to Gedmatch as well.

I’m probably a difficult case here. Both of my parents and all my siblings have died as have all of my grandparents. I do not have any of their DNA. I do however have aunts on both sides still alive. Would I be able to recreate my grandfather’s on my dads side? I likely can get his sisters dna.

The best thing to do is try with what you have. The key is to make sure you separate father's genetic relatives from mother's genetic relatives. While siblings and parents are helpful DNA tests to have, the cousins can be helpful to delineate the DNA. In group 1 you put yourself and any siblings. In group 2, use your mother's cousins and any other genetic relatives from her line.

Group 0. - my dads 1/2 brother different dad kit used Group 1. - my dad kit Group 2. - 134 unknown paternal relations kits. Highest match is 144 (not great) Got a kit that is 1641cM Please help with where I should go next. The matches to your Lazarus kit is a good start to research. Just always be aware that because of the limited information in a Lazarus kit, you are still going to have a lot of false matches.

I added mom in Group 0. I added my self and half brother in group 1, and shared matched between my brother and I in group 2 up to 30 kits.

Since you have your mom, put her in group 0, put you and your half brother in group 1 and group 2. That will be the best that you can create.

In the old way of making the Lazarus kit it was frustrating to end up with my deceased husband showing as a closer match to his niece than to his three tested kids. There is no dna chance that she is his child so it had to do with the Lazarus kit.

It has to do with the conservative nature that Lazarus is created. Since the niece is clearly on his side of the family, all of those segments are going into the kit. With your kids, it doesn't want to put the wrong DNA (your DNA) into his kit, so if your kids don't match one of the other relatives, then that segment doesn't get put in.

I am trying to identify my maternal grandmother's line. She passed about 50 years ago. She had 5 children and the last died almost 20 years ago. So no help there. However, there is one cousin (and only 1) that is related only to my grandmother's spouse. I have quite a few known cousins (1c to 3c2r) on my grandmother's side that have done DNA. I have also identified several of my DNA matches to my grandmother's paternal side. With that data I created a Lazarus kit for my grandmother in January 2018; at which time I got a few matches. I can't see what kits I used or the number of cMs created, just the results of one-to-many matches that show. When I checked her kit again today, it shows over 3,000 matches on the one-to-many. Is that really possible? The only people I know on the one-to-many match are me and one of my half-nephews. This would be great if these were my grandmother's maternal matches, but I can't believe it. My grandmother, per family stories, came from a large family. She was taken to an orphanage in 1894 when she was 8. The interesting thing I noticed on her matches, many of them refer to adoption in part their "name". From the video it seems that I must have had enough cMs created or I wouldn't get any one-to-many matches. Has Lazarus changed? Does this sound like I entered something wrong in creating Lazarus to get so many matches? Thoughts?

I would try recreating your Lazarus kit again to see if you are getting the same results. Once the kit is generated, you can download a file that has a listing of all the kits used to create that Lazarus kit.

If I download my Subject's Lazarus data as a spreadsheet, can I improve the information by supplementing it with matches' data (in the same format) from other sites, then upload it to gedmatch? Or, does Gedmatch need the actual DNA?

That's not a Lazarus question. Depending on the company you test with, you should be able to see who matches you and your half-brother. And in some cases who matches your half-brother and not you (his father's line) and who you match and your brother doesn't match (your father's line). Half siblings can help you differentiate some of your matches between the parental lines.

Lazarus won't help you. However. Have your maternal aunt and cousins take DNA tests. Then you can use DNA Match lists to see who matches your known relatives to predict your maternal line. That's the first step. There are others, but that gets you started.

Come to find out, I'm her half Aunt because her father is my half brother. Which in itself is awesome. We talk on the phone, and write to each other since we have found each other. Happy ending.

Can I effectively recreate my maternal grandmother's DNA using my still-alive full-grandaunt, my mother's, my brother's, and self DNA? Would a 5th sample help, or would it be excessive? What about retrieving DNA from a buried body? Could that raw DNA be uploaded to MyHeritage? Cheers^^
