I've had a 3OSHB Gemeinhardt for about 7 years, and it has served me extremely well. Got me into a music school with a big scholarship. All the ways you described it, and the way you have to play it (including some of it's negatives) we're spot on and you took the words right out of my mouth! It's an extremely good intermediate model flute, especially if you can figure out how to play it the way she describes. I'm currently looking for a professional flute, and after watching your Muramatzu video and trying a few models for myself, I'm totally in love. Your videos are extremely informative and helpful, for beginners to college students to professionals. Thank you for doing what you do!

My understanding of Sir James Galway's flute when he won the Berlin post was that it was a silver Cooper flute, No. 164, but with a Haynes silver headjoint. I believe he recorded the Mozart Flute and Harp concerto on it. Cooper's own headjoints were neither the raised pattern or straight across, so the Gemeinhardts are completely different.

I started playing the flute a month ago. For Christmas I got a flute, and it has the NG1 headjoint (I started on my friends old flute). Before then I had no idea that there was a variety of headjoints! I love it. It’s got such a warm tone compared to the one my friend has. Your review was so accurate and I’m going to try the embouchure you mentioned.

yes!! I really feel that pianists should do that, because you know, some digital pianos - especially those that can be found on group piano labs are okay for studying over a bad acoustic. Buuuut, most of the reviews doesn't showcase what a pianist actually needs to do on classical repertoire. But I love your reviews... your discussion on technique on this one is A M A Z I N G . Never thought that everything inside the mouth could actually have infuence on how your flute sounds. Really! I never thought about it!

Yes! I find interesting how you discuss technique on each aspect of flute playing and how it feels on that flute. Even each flutist being different and every flutist playing on their own way, I find fascinating. Really. Because flute tecnique seems to depend heavily on the model of the flute. Videos like this are not just reviews, are flute classes in miniature!

I got a Gemeinhardt 2sp in 6th grade when I started playing flute, since that was the flute EVERYBODY got. It treated me so well, but I didn’t feel like I sounded as good as I could. I then moved on to the Pearl 525 in 8th grade, but it was always about 20 cents sharp, and I used it for marching, which ruined it. Now, I have the Miyazawa 202, I couldn’t be happier, thanks to your video reviews!!

Thanks for that demo and explanation of the headjoint and the mouth control issues, which I'm going to be practicing from now on, to discover lots of options. I'm one who also insists on the lip plate part on the far side of the player, where the air has gone past the tone hole, be pressed down out of the way of the air, so no air hits it. The reason is only because any air hitting metal creates a wind noise, and microphones pick that up. Maybe you don't notice it playing without a microphone, but for recording purposes, this is an important issue. So no matter how good a player you are, especially in quieter playing, you don't want to be playing into a microphone in the studio or on stage and creating any extra air friction noise on the flute tube or its added parts. (You can test this out yourself to see what I mean, by blowing air in a straight line and then lowering the flute about 3 inches to the right of the tone hole, down across that stream of air. Notice the sound of air striking the flute tube as it crosses the air stream. You can hear it, but a quality microphone might hear more of it. Players in the studio and using stage mics have to figure out how to get MUSIC into the microphone without letting the air that's gone past the flute to go right at the microphone (microphones also become noise generators if non-musical wind hits them!), unless you're playing the Vivaldi "Noisy Hurricanes And Tornados Concerto". That Galway headjoint with the contoured shape is likely concerned with that, among other things, since Sir J.G. is a recording studio and live performance regular who relies on high quality microphones and peak tonal quality and who won't want any excess air noise anywhere. On a cheap $500 flute I had, I just took pliers and bend the metal down and out of the way, but I would NOT recommend that to others, since the riser, if made of pure silver, is not structurally strong and you can't afford to bend it too. Only the small lip plate area on the far side of the air-stream path needs moving out of the way. You could ask a local flute repair person if they can help you, if you too want to try this. No, do NOT try this at home, at least on the flutes you might EVER expect to sell again or if the flute is worth more than about $500 new. If you damage the riser, you're in for a $300+ repair bill. The lip plate itself will only withstand a very little movement out of shape of how it was made, because notice that they all seem to have bent-over edges on the sides, which will prevent the main part of the lip plate from moving much at all. You also don't want to bend the lip plate much, because you tempt the bad fate of causing a separation of the lip plate from the riser. Fixing THAT problem with a home welding kit isn't going to produce fun results. Only a small amount of adjustment is needed, but the tools that a pro flute repair person has, plus a little heating up of the metal at the time, can make this procedure simple, quick and safe.

Hey Joanna, I was just wondering... how did you initially find out that you had a special type of acidity in your finger sweat(lol that sounds weird). I’m asking because the silver on my flute’s body is fading and turning orange around the keys. Keep in mind I’ve only had this flute for a few months. I think it might be my fingers too but I’m not sure. Any answer would be appreciated, thanks :)

I stepped up from Gemeinhardt all- plated C to a 3s, b-foot all-silver with J1 headjoint. I immediately got many positive comments about how my playing suddenly improved. Then I bought an NG1, which increased upper range and projection but there has been a learning curve. At least I don't need a mic now. As you mentioned, particularly to work in the upper register, one must indeed squeeze from the sides with enlarged inner mouth as when singing baritone. I am a lifelong trumpet and recorder player who began flute about 4 yr. ago. I am fascinated with it. I play mainly modern christian worship with an ensemble, switching between brass and flute. They use opposite embouchures, but everything else is the same. The NG1 offers a much to explore, but now I am curious about the Gallway replica and wondering if it may offer what I get from the NG1 but with possibly more precision. By the way, I love your vids. Your diagrams and detailed comments are quite helpful.

Thank you for saying that there’s nothing wrong about not playing an open holed model flute as your fingers can’t cover the holes. When I was upgrading to my intermediate model I tried an open holed flute without the plugs. Left hand fingers covered them fine, but on the right hand I couldn’t get my fingers to cover the holes correctly and I would shoot straight to the top of the fourth octave. My flute teacher put it down to bad technique, but I have really small hands and shortish fingers with slim fingertips. So I have decided to stick with the closed hole option. Also I think my right hand is on the lazy side due to it being my bowing hand when I learning the violin. Much love xx
@JustAnotherFlutist
@JustAnotherFlutist 6 жыл бұрын
Oh, you're absolutely welcome!! I have a few friends who absolutely have to leave the ring finger key of each hand plugged because their hands are literally too short and too narrow to cover those holes. And that's totally fine--no one can tell the difference anyway! We're all different, and that's what makes each one of us beautiful.

Another thought for future reviews. Can you do a higher intermediate flute vs a lower professional flute? Like a solid silver intermediate flute vs silver plated (silver headjoint) professional model? Ex. Amadeus 700 vs Haynes Q1. Azumi AZ3 vs Altus 807/907. Or other cheapest fancy brand vs fanciest cheap brand. Or is that too "apples to oranges?" Sometimes it seems it isn't that much more expensive to bump up to that professional flute, but do you lose a lot going back down to silver plated (with silver headjoint) vs the tone quality from the solid silver of the intermediate flute?

Notification squad! How do you get 2 piccolos to play in tune? Shoot one of them. JK! But seriously tho, piccolos are VERY hard to tune. My friends both have the Yamaha 62 (one has a wave style headjoint) and one's piccolo is super sharp and one is super flat. Like, she doesn't even have to pull out her headjoint to tune.

Oh nooooo :O XD Hahahahahahaha!!! That is very true--they kinda go haywire depending on the temperature of the room too! It's pretty crazy!! You really have to rely on your ear rather than your instrument to tune well!
@sortaswim81419
@sortaswim81419 6 жыл бұрын
JustAnotherFlutist Yeah, it also helps that they have different headjoints, but the piccolo is also a bit of an extreme instrument. There really isn't one that is right in the middle in terms of tuning in general. Its either really far right or really far left on the tuning scale.

In my flute choir, we had 2 piccolo players that actually played perfectly in tune. I believe they had the same type of piccolo, a Pearl if I remember correctly. 2 piccolo in tune is a very beautiful sound

I honestly don't know what I'm doing!! I'm just usually start from A4, wiggle my way down to the lowest B3, then wiggle my way up to the A5, then I wiggle up to D6, then I wiggle to high G6... then slowly make my way up to D7. Then I do some sort of chromatic wiggle down from D6 to A5, and for some reason I jump down to D5, then A4, then D4, then back up to A4, D5, A5, then D5? Something like that :P

JustAnotherFlutist I’m not a professional musician, but I 100% plan to be when I am older, I hate practicing, what can I do to motivate myself(if anyone else can help that would be great!)
@JustAnotherFlutist
@JustAnotherFlutist 6 жыл бұрын
Well, first off, always set aside something FUN to play around with (not practice) after every practice session. It can be anything. A cover of your favourite song, a theme from your favourite movie, etc. That way, when you practice, you're not _just_ practicing and drilling the same exercises over and over. You have something fun to look forward to, and you'll even notice that your practicing will pay off and make your fun stuff sound even better!

I had a 1966 Gemeinhardt M3 which I just got rid of... it’s the instrument i used to switch to open hole and i only used it for a month I believe. Compare to my new Yamaha 362H that flute has an extremely tricky headjoint which doesn’t respond very well and I had lot of trouble getting on high F sharp. And that flute was in an awful condition which the keys are not fast enough and the low C sharp key is leaking... but I have to say that flute does not sound bad even compare to my Yamaha. My parents just decided to get me an early professional flute for around $3000 in USD instead of letting me pay off my Yamaha and I want a solid silver body with a C sharp trill. Any suggestions?
@JustAnotherFlutist
@JustAnotherFlutist 6 жыл бұрын
Ah, a new solid silver flute starts at around $5500 or so (look under "Pre-Professional flutes $5500-$7000" on the FCNY website). I'd suggest looking at those flutes, get a feel of the models, and then look for a used version of them to bring the price down. I have quite a few students who have done this to great success! FCNY carries many used flutes, so you can simply ask them in the same email/phone call!

JustAnotherFlutist I tried a Yamaha 681 in my local woodwind shop which they asks for $2200 CAD and I feel extremely comfortable with it even though I only picked up the flute three months ago... however it doesn’t have a C sharp trill but I feel it responds better than my 362 for some reason. Also I’m just curious about, how much will a used silver Brannen Kingma cost?
@JustAnotherFlutist
@JustAnotherFlutist 6 жыл бұрын
Wow, any Kingma is gonna tag on a higher price because of the 6 extra keys, and only very specialized flutists will buy it if they play modern music a lot! You may want to think about possibly buying the Yamaha 681 for now and then trading it in for a flute with a C# trill in the future after you've saved up some more? Older flutes tend not to have the C# trill key (although some rare ones do!). You can also have FCNY or your local music store stay on the look out for one with a C# trill key for you! I know tons of people who do that. ;)

I'm self taught I many string instruments but I want to start learning some woodwind instruments I am deciding between flute and clarinet I would play the flute but i had a bad experience about 3 years ago when someone was teaching me flute but I know the basics and I hated that you could not see the flute at all so it was kinda hard as a beginner and my instructor was a jerk so I don't know if I should start the clarinet or pick up where I left off with the flute to be honest I did not get any were the first time I tried flute so I don't know if it will be the same this time but whichever one I don't play now I'll probably play later
@JustAnotherFlutist
@JustAnotherFlutist 6 жыл бұрын
Oh man, I'm so sorry you had that experience. :( Flute really is very fun if you find the right instructor! I would say just go with whatever you know your heart wants to learn first. Think of it more as "what do I really _want_ to do" rather than "what _should_ I study right now". There's no right or wrong answer! :)

hey Joana ive been trying to contact you on instagram lately but I have another question again. I had a chat with my band director last week and we were talking about step up instruments and he told me that it would be better for me to get a used flute rather than buying a new one. He said it'll favor me both in the price and quality because apparently instruments get better within time. I would like to know if this is true, I tend to doubt him a lot but I just want to be certain.

Sorry for all the questions but ah once again I have another important one. Since I am looking to upgrade and benefit from a higher quality/intermediate instrument is it essential that I get an all silver/sterling silver bodied flute? I'm currently looking at the pearl 505 which is only silver plated. will this hold me back any? I've been playing for 6 years now but definetly on a budget!

You may have already found a better flute, but Ebay lists a lot of Gemeinhardt 3SB flutes, which are all silver and cheaper than other brands. That's where I got mine. It was in good shape and plays really well, definitely a step-up from a plated instrument. Mine is marked 3S and Solid Silver. If you need to play louder, an NG1 headjoint in solid silver was found for around $500 also on Ebay.

Do you think that for the long term (many decades- the rest of my life), I'd be better off buying the solid silver 33SSB rather than plated body/mechanism 33SHB? From wiping the flute with a cloth, I do not know how much the silver plating will wear off from the decades of wiping.
@Jerry-hp5sf
@Jerry-hp5sf 6 жыл бұрын
Sergio Acevedo actually it’s the acid from your skin that will take plating off a flute over time. Wiping helps by removing these acids from the instrument. Plated versus solid silver is more a sound and cost issue. SS is usually more expensive and will give the instrument a brighter, more projected sound.
@JustAnotherFlutist
@JustAnotherFlutist 6 жыл бұрын
What Jerry said!! That reminds me that I should show you guys what happened to my Mateki before I bought it. The previous owner's sweat was so acidic that it took off some of the silver from one of the keys!!
@sergioacevedo2254
@sergioacevedo2254 6 жыл бұрын
I see, thank you both for the correction! But in the long term, without regards to monetary or performance value, would a solid silver be better off from acidic wear (or any sort of wear in general) than silver plating?

The diagrams showing balls of air in the mouth, take up way too much time away from the flutes descriptions. To be honest, this aspect should be removed completely,and more time on the sounds and features.🎼
