Hi Gemma! I used to love singing onto the music and I spent like 5 years without singing (for many reasons) without noticing the time pass and when I tried to sing some months ago my voice wasn't responding as expected (obviously) so I started learning and practicing regularly and more mindful and I've never sing this beautiful and comfortable in my life!! I still have so much to learn but I'm so happy! Thank you for your videos!

I teach voice, my mom teaches voice, and I studied opera for ten years - I have never heard this information before and I swear I listened to my teachers! The larynx is hanging of the hyoid bone and the base of the tongue is connected to that, so THAT’S why it always feels so good to loosen & stretch out the front of the tongue when singing 🤯 I must repeat, the larynx is hanging….. new convert!!! Can’t wait to dig into all your videos 👏thank you for existing, you’re also hilarious!

Gemma, I am totally new to this. I can sing but, I have never warmed up, cooled down or exercised my voice. Should I practise these three exercises a few times a day? if so for how long? or/ should they only be used when you are about to record the song? Do these exercises have muscle memory? meaning .. if you practice them will your voice will find this perfect sweet spot over time? How exactly should these exercises be used?

Is this an exercise that I should do just before I sing or something I can do that will refine the quality of my voice overtime?

Your videos are incredible! I just got hip to the third exercise this year and it literally changed my voice and my life. Completely opened up a range in my voice and put a magnifying glass on tension that had been a stumbling block for my whole life. I'm on the mountaintop with you singing its praises - literally! And better than ever before!

One of the many reasons I personally love the straw is because I have allergies and mucous is a constant issue for me and I was always clearing my throat when I first began a singing session and didn’t realize how aggressively I was doing so until it was pointed out to me (it had just become a habit). Using the straw for my warmups clears all that away and I don’t get that urge to clear my throat. I just find it’s like the loveliest massage for my cords. I also have a tendency to kind of grip down too hard (best way I can describe it) when I am moving through my natural break between registers or make super clunky transitions in that one “spot” in my voice and the straw seems to just melt that tension away. It’s like my brain is learning that my voice can do it, it doesn’t need to get all bossy and start meddling with things. I love to sing Adele songs, but nearly all of her songs have transitions *exactly* where my voice feels it’s most insecure and it drives me bonkers lol. It’s been a challenge to get my head out of the way and just let go and the straw has been the only thing that works. I adore it. It’s been a godsend. I mean, I’ve done every other exercise out there to death, it just didn’t click until I was introduced to the straw. I’m going on and on here but …. I feel sometimes as a singer like I want someone to be able to get inside my vocal tract and nudge things around so I can feel what needs to happen to improve the sound and technique because the verbal cues often times just confuse the heck out of me. The straw, as it turns out, is doing just that. It’s retraining my voice by getting me out of the way. I. Love. It ❤

This is super helpful, I really appreciate you explaining the mechanics behind every exercise, it helps me believe why I'm doing it, if that makes sense. Could you do a video on projection and/or dynamics maybe? For me personally, more support always means louder for some reason and I don't know why

You're spot on Stewie!! One my favourite approaches to control airflow /air pressure balance is through adjusting volume (aka dynamics). Great topic will BRB on this!!

you can tell it really opens up the resonance chambers... it is a delicate balance between air pressures... although there's a much easier way to describe that sensation the exercises demonstrates that well... I love doing these!

Hi Gemma thank you so much I absolutely love you and I wanted to ask what are some exercises that can help with tightness because sometimes in a song I feel like my throat is just aching saying this hurts, stop😢. Thank you
@trueartisttv
@trueartisttv Жыл бұрын
Aw Emily, you're so sweet! Usually the resonance isn't doing the heavy lifting for us and makes us rely on muscles instead which makes singing very fatiguing and sore. Usually singers who get fatigued are missing some brightness in their sound, the sound is too airy, or they are pulling up their chest voice too high and chucking too much airflow at it. xx

thank you for the greeeeeeeat video! One question though: i remember from my speech therapy that i was only allowed to breathe through my nose during these exercises. you weren't doing that, so what's your opinion about that?
@trueartisttv
@trueartisttv Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the Q Pia! Breathing through your nose tends to slow your breath rate down, it humidifies the air coming in and warms it up, it's convenient when you're doing something with your mouth but it takes a bit longer to get the air in. So both mouth and nose are always options but it's exploring what's right for different situations. :) x

Check out the official Singing Straw YouTUbe channel. They break this down if more so you can take it step by step. It's hard to know what exactly might be the issue but what might help is - let the SOVT do the work. You shouldn't be creating any effort, let the SOVT do the work for you.
