One thing that wasn't mentioned is that you have cultured saltwater and freshwater pearls. Freshwater pearls make up most of the pearls you see in the market and are quite affordable. While the best quality saltwater pearls always trumps the best of freshwater pearls in rarity, value, and luster, freshwater pearls are actually 100% nacre. That is because they are cultured from pieces of mantle tissue and not the shell beads used to culture saltwater pearls. So freshwater pearls are a pretty good deal in my opinion, very durable, can attain high luster, and at only fraction of the cost.

Back in the seventies, my dad brought a string of cultured pearls back from Japan, for my mom. Mikimoto cultured pearls. He even brought a canned oyster, with a cultured pear in it, and a little book about the process. I'm still in awe of our ability to manipulate nature and create such beauty.

Excellent video! I am a GG and I was lucky enough to attend a 3 day seminar in Vermont with Antoinette Matlins several years ago. It was an incredible experience. She is a treasure of knowledge and a treasure to the industry. I hope she comes back to do more videos! Wonderful to see her.

THE purple color comes from the interior of the quahog shell. The wampanoag indians of the mashpee region used this as wampum, or trade beads, money. You can purchase wampum jewelry from indigenous makers in the Northeastern region.😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊🙏🏼💙⛵😁

So wait, my friend has a charm bracelet with a pearl on it and over time the pearl has seemed to shrink and deform as if the layers are peeling away. Does this mean that the pearl is loosing the luster and only the nuclei is showing like your describing here? Only I've never seen evidence it actually peeling anywhere. No flaking.

Interesting! As a geology major/chem minor lots to unpack here. Obviously avoided biology because the physical sciences are much less messy, but my understanding is that even with the carbonate buffer system we have built-in over eons of evolution, there is still some wiggle room. And some people will have more acidic excretions than others, and this is why some people can't wear less-noble metals cuz they get green stains. Aragonite is way more suceptible to acid than, say, nickel. Would love to hear what someone better versed in biology has to say about this though 🤔 That being said, really cool guest! I hope you have her on again and ask her to bring her duck pearl 🤗 and of course you already know that thank goodness rebeccah rescued this channel from natalie lol
