In this case it's pretty implicit because categorizing minerals into gems stops being purely scientific and starts incorporating aesthetic values. i.e. Minerals have definite formulas while gems are minerals subcategorised by marketable colours/etc.

@@KrosanBeast315 I don't think you can give "species" to rocks. I'm also a firm believer that if it's translucent, it's agate, even if there's no banding. Because a piece of agate that would come from between two bands would still be agate, even without the banding

If no "official" varieties of jasper exist, yet the eye can still tell there are, then the GIA rulebook does not matter, here. It's like saying red and green jaspers are THE SAME THING because GIA does not mention colors.

@@davidcovington901First of all, it's NOT a 'Rule Book'. That is EXTREMELY disrespectful given what it says for the descriptions of over 700 known Varieties and Species. The Gem Identification Lab Manual is a critical piece of equipment for all Graduate Gemologists. A person usually cannot make a proper Identification without it unless the material is so distinctive it is easy to Identify by sight, or is so exotic is not found in the Lab Manual and must be sent to a G.I.A Laboratory for a full analysis using Raman Spectometry. According to pg. 127(red) and pg. 234(green) of the G.I.A. Gem Identification Lab Manual, those colors of Variety: Jasper, Species: Chalcedony ARE the same thing(Welcome to Gem Identification rules for labeling a Gemstone correctly 101). If I marked something as Red Jasper or Green Jasper as the Variety Call for Chalcedony on the 20 Stone Final Exam, I would've FAILED it! Under the Variety Call for Jasper, it lists it as "General variety term for opaque Chalcedony of any color or combination of colors except solid black or specially named material." Even Jaspers going under such names as "Brecciated", "Leopard Skin", and "Mookaite" all are Trade Names, and NOT Varieties. The rules are finite, and as a Graduate Gemologist, I know all too well how using a Trade Name as a Variety Call come back to haunt you. This is why a proper education and why labeling things correctly is so important.

You seem to really need an outlet for your pedantic comments. Seeing as your knowledge far exceeds that of the hosts of this video (according to you), why don't you start making your own videos? The thing is, you'll need to be friendly and likeable... and you definitely don't come across that way.
