If you daydream or you imagine you’re in a beautiful place where you’re safe and loved, that’s fine. If you allow that to take over your life, you have serious issues to address. There’s a fine line between wanting to get away from things for awhile and avoiding reality altogether.

Yeah that's why social media and pornography are the two worst factors that play a role in all this. Social media you only ever upload the positive things about your life, well I thought that until people are now apparently flaunting their ailments and afflictions. And pornography is a way to tap into any and every little sexual fantasy you may or may have had. So easily and readily available that it's become something to discuss with groups of people instead of something you do in private and keep to yourself. I guess that's why we have a whole generation focused entirely on sexuality.

I agree. Daydreaming has values most art and fictional stories begin with daydreaming. CS Lewis was a notorious daydreamer. Pretty sure all the Inklings were. Pretty sure Van Gogh and Monet were. My favorite contemporary author has admitted that his stories manifested out of these two characters that “showed up” in his head one day and have been constantly ribbing or arguing with each other for decades. But these artists were constructive with these daydreams. They were self-aware that their imaginations were separate from reality and instead controlled those fantasies to create great stories and works of art to share. It’s weird to think that if my favorite author were a teen today, social media would be convincing him that those characters in his head are alters. I suffer Tru maladaptive daydreaming and work to control it. My outlet is turning them into fanfics to explore ideas. Now I can either dismiss the daydream if it supports the story, or jot the idea down to return to when my tasks are done.

These people need to watch The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, one of my favorite films- about a guy who lives a very boring life that he spices up through daydreams-- but then he starts actually doing things, and the frequency of those daydreams diminishes dramatically until they cease altogether because at the end of the film he doesn't have TIME to daydream- he's too busy LIVING HIS DREAMS.

I'm a big daydreamer and do it nearly every day, but I usually stay grounded in reality and don't forget my standing or situation that I'm in. I love fairytales and reading stories and while they comfort me in my everyday life and make me happy, I don't dictate my life around it or pretend that reality doesn't exist or that I secretly disconnect from real life and go to a fantasy world. The sad thing is that the culture reinforces people's drive to identify as damaged, rather than deal with his/her problems. This can and will lead to an actually damaged, disrupted life. thats actually so true, and I see this with myself and others, I have a lot of issues that I am trying to figure out with professionals but in the meantime I am trying to entertain myself away from social media. when I am not going to school or doing work for school, I am at the ice rink, or I am resting my body (also have physical issues) but learning a language or doing art or journaling. I know I am pretty damaged and when I am waiting for answers (trying to find a doctor currently) I am trying to do something to better other aspects of my life rather than just sit around in fantasy land. and honestly these kids would do better pouring their struggles into some form of expression (for me I journal) but maybe they could write a story or paint a painting to express themselves rather than just bottle it all up waiting for the explosion.

I have maladaptive daydreaming, (not diagnosed though), for me it is most certainly a coping mechanism from the toxicity of my family. At times it is problematic like when im trying to get school and other stuff done. However it is not an anti-social behavior for me. I am a huge extrovert, anyone who knows me would say so. I definitely have a much healthier version of it, but it's not normal and -probably- shouldn't be. (I say that because I do also use it as a way to write stories, it really helps me with that. ^-^)

@@Ray-xc5im Obviously what I’m talking about is using books as a form of escapism in the way it was intended. I wasn’t talking about misusing books in order to daydream. Fanfic writing is also okay. I’m talking about daydreaming in the sense that you’ll basically stop living in the real world for hours, which is what the people on the TikToks seem to be doing. That doesn’t seem healthy to me. I think I've heard Jordan Peterson speak of his theory that this type of thing happens because people of this generation never developed their imagination because they grew up watching screens...and never were able to be bored. To me, this "reality shifting" is just the delayed development of imagination that is so needed for us as humans. It's so sad. Many kids don't know how to play and fantasize anymore, and all of this "reality shifting" seems to be their natural, suppressed childhood playtime exploding out of them...albeit in a harmful way.

Those devices practically raised some kids. Of course they have no imagination. I also think that’s why so many kids are so rowdy and disruptive nowadays. I look at the younger grades in my high school and they’re actually feral. They start fights every week, their attention spans are shot. Maladaptive daydreaming is something I have endorsed for about 20 years now. At the beginning I never even knew what this process was, I was just an overweight kid with no friends and these daydreaming periods felt comforting. They never lasted hours nor had they any significant impact on my normal, day to day life, they just happened during commuting from home to school and back, before going to sleep, etc. After I grew up and learnt about it, I kinda understood that this indeed was some sort of coping mechanism for my lack of social life, but I also tried to use it to my advantade to improve my writing and using my imagination like this to write different shorter or longer stories. It was an exciting and creative process, and I humbly admit I still daydream nowadays, but I understand that it has to be done in moderation and we should never loose the connection to reality. Intersectional ideology is characterized as an ideology routed in Marxist, socialist propaganda integrated into a number of different western social movements based in class, race, sexual preference, identity, religious and political preferences most pronounced in Critical Race Theory, Intersectional feminism and the LGBTQ+ (Not to be confused with the early 2000s LGBT movement) and DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion). The goals and actions of the woke movement can be characterized by a belief that all people belong to either a victim or an oppressor class. There is a hierarchy that assigns virtue or privilege based on perceived group identity and members of the woke movements will form angry mobs to attack others inside or out of the group to destabilize systems, reroute resources to perceived oppressed groups and attack outgroups. Victim status will be used to pressure and control it's believers and outside groups into submission under the guise of being tolerant and empathetic. Activists will use it as a shield to defend against any form of retaliation. The woke activists will lie, manipulate, bully and propagandize others by claiming any opposition is a form of hatred or bigotry. The woke ideology do not recognize any form of objective truths and only aspire to power and 'their truths.' Synonyms: Intersectionality, Social Justice. Marxism. Communism." Because Marxists designed the ideology to control them I understant if it's too complicated, but to put it simply, these kids are mentally indoctrinated to believe the world is against them, and they give them identities to feel comradeship with others, making them easier to control.

They really are. I had the same therapist for many years and she was super woke. She got really excited when I told her I was so lonely that I was considering dating women (I’m a straight woman). When I look back at it now it’s obvious she hated that I was straight and tried so hard to discourage me every time I was interested in a guy. She eventually convinced me I was trans when I clearly just had trauma. I was on hormones for years and I had surgeries scheduled and everything. But I detransitioned rapidly after I met the perfect guy and fell in love with him. When I told my therapist about him she told me I shouldn’t bother with him because he wasn’t going to like me back. So I stopped seeing her and now I’m so much happier with my boyfriend. Woke therapists are cancer.

Self love is self parenting, therefore it means establishing personal discipline. No one in the modern age has been parented well, therefore they have little to no internal motivation. Narcissism is not only caused by trauma but also by overindulgence. We are the most overindulged people who have ever lived. Is peoples behavior that surprising? Basic attachment theory is real.

They're mocking actual autistics as a form of bullying that degrades the seriousness of the disability. The only positive I see is with Autism getting so much attention a lot more people are educated so I am able to act a bit more freely autistic at my college without judgement for example I have trouble completely suppressing arm flapping and now people call it quirky instead of coming up with names for me.

Hey Katt yes I have quite often had very lucid dreams, that seamed so real it takes time to orientate back to your actual situation. The one that has stuck with me for decades was when I was apparently in hospital and about to die of something, I remember being in tears with my mother telling her I didn’t want to die there and then , not long after I woke up and it felt so real it affected me for quite a while , I actually thought it was a premonition , but my mother passed back in 2017 so clearly it’s not ! However that was the most vivid dream, I do have vivid ones quite often and are more used to them so distinguish them apart a lot better.

As someone with high functioning autism (professionally diagnosed at 8), it is easy to get lost in my own head. I often have family members snap me out of it because my blank staring can get creepy. It even affects my dreams. I have very vivid dreams. There are times I wake up, relieved, because some of the dreams were very disturbing. I have no doubt in my mind people are “self-diagnosing” themselves for attention. To them, it’s better to say “I’m damaged” rather than “I’m boring”. They wouldn’t survive one day with real autism. They would need their little safe spaces.

I used to play roleplays online by writing a character and make it act in the Hogwarts universe for example. It was a way of escape reality and expressing emotions. I left when I realized how much people get invested in it and put themselves in the character. So that whatever happens to him is kinda personal and it creates so many issues with other players. It's crazy. Many of these people are problematic. It's cathartic in a way but I dunno it's weird. During the pandemic this kind of game gained its old popularity, a way to make connections and live adventures while at home. I also know people who lose themselves in videogames and books, they think they live through the characters but on reality the do nothing and suffer from severe anxiety and depression. It's really sad, it shouldn't be promoted.

I've been role-playing for just under two decades. I've seen it change from simple escapism(everyone admitted it being that when I first got into it) but fun, to nowadays some people being so into it, that it's dangerous mentally. I've gotten attached to a character I've had since I began, and often put my actual traits and self into him in some ways, but at the end of the day he isn't me. It's, to me, also partially why D&D is becoming so bad. True creativity is being lost by people who, instead of having to think, simply want to be able to tell you why X character is different from the others of their race from birth, instead of having to actually find ways during their adventure to get around their racial weaknesses.

Just lucid dream instead of "reality shifting".

It's actually regular dreams. It's too much to explain here but to put it simply it's dream incubation, choosing what to dream about before going to sleep. The difference is during a lucid dream you know you're dreaming. It is possible to lose lucidity however and that's what the so called "lucid dream method" is and it's literall just going through a portal in your dream. That's literally all that technique is and they really believe it somehow takes them to a real place

I'm a 31yo Millennial and I was a Progressive Democrat since the first time Obama ran for president, I made the decision two years ago to leave the left because the left is marching down a very destructive path that is up-ending every foundation that keeps a society stable. The tranz issue was the final straw for me, I'm not going to allow these people to tell me my own eyes are lying to me (figuratively speaking). They think that all "progress" is good "progress" when that couldn't be further from the truth, the changes these people are pushing are destabilizing society and encouraging people to indulge in self-destructive behavior. I could no longer tolerate this nonsense and it led me to becoming socially conservative on most cultural issues at this point, social conservatism is the only side that's still grounded in objective reality at this point. I never thought I would become a social conservative, but these far left extremists pushed me here.

The’ve even tried to project that onto me, telling me I’ve got depression when I say I had a rough day, or that I have OCD when I mention how I should probably go clean my room, and the number of times they’ve told me autistic just because I’ve gotten really into something is insane. I’ve got diagnosed ADHD, and that’s it. I don’t need any other disorders, cause I know that I’m more than just my problems, and they don’t seem to realize that. Before tiktok Shifting basically meant law of attraction or manifestation. And yes, I've done the research. Almost everything related to shifting is something that's already known in the lucid dreaming community. For example, symptoms you get are just your body fallout asleep. And yes I've read the document, the gateway process is about astral projection, not shifting and there's zero scientific data in it

Hi Misha, I think it would be really interesting for you to talk about the "DID" community on Tiktok, which is (mostly teenage) young people pretending to have multiple personalities which they call "alters", often based on fictional characters. I find it fascinating and frightening in different measures. In some ways I think it's a natural progression from saying you're multiple genders at once -- saying you're multiple people.

There’s a big difference between actual DID caused by trauma and repressed trauma, and then there’s kids who do it for attention or inclusion😭😭😔 There are undoubtedly some kids in that community who genuinely have DID, because abuse in families is rampant now, so that’s bound to cause trauma in many young teens. But there are also definitely some fakers who are doing it for validation and attention. I do believe that many of the kids on tiktok may have some complicated home lives, which is why they use tiktok as a form of escapism. It’s still very sad tho

"Shifting" seems an awful lot like lucid dreaming or daydreaming. It's fine if you're doing it _sometimes._ After all, TV, reading and gaming are also forms of escapism and nobody attacks them. However, just like all of the things I've just mentioned, just know that you do need to be in reality sometimes.

Lucid dreaming is all about being in reality, it's in the name *lucid* . Shifting is pretty much regular nonlucid dreams. It's pretty much just choosing what you dream about before going to sleep aka dream incubation. Both lucid dreaming and dream incubation are very healthy on their own but if you trick yourself into believing you're going to real places it leads to dissociative disorders. When I discovered dream incubation I thought dreams were alternate universes, I would hangout in teen titans and adventure time. My belief system back then was still much different than Shifting though and now that I actually know how dreams work I no longer buy into all that stuff. If shifting was around when I was doing that stuff I would have probably ended uo much worse mentally

I’m a Professionally diagnosed Autistic and your points are incredibly spot on about the romanticizing of mental illnesses. I’ve seen so many posts about people who want to base their entire identity around their disability but I don’t like that I stumble over my words and have trouble understanding social cues. I would much rather celebrate the progress I’ve made in getting better with these challenges rather than celebrate the thing that hinders me to begin with. This was an excellent video, Misha. I really appreciate your wisdom and insight as well as your humor. That usage of the SpongeBob clip was great.

About this whole imaginary gender controversy, ChatGPT once answered to me(a center-leftist South Korean) "...It's important to remember that language is constantly evolving and changing, and the use of neopronouns and xenopronouns is one way that language is adapting to better represent and recognize the diversity of gender identities. While it may take some time for some people to become accustomed to using these pronouns, it is important to respect individuals' choices and use the pronouns they have specified." I had this to say... "Evolving and adapting? Well I'm not very certain about that, but I sure think the entire idea of neopronouns overcomplicated and frankly, more regressive. Heck some could go as far as saying it's even narcissistic and hypersensitive in a way. So yes, I argue the so-called language *is* changing, for all but better. A slope towards chaos and dissociation if you will. People who unironically want to identify as a microbe or whatever are literally asking for oppression. Sadly enough, those trapped in their make believe worlds won't find it unless they experience Soviet/North Korean labor camps or Nazi concentration facilities."

I can say that chatGPT is not a good source for info, it's programmed with biases towards the politics of it's creators, which happens to be marxism, which this whole identity stuff is a part of. Neo-pronouns and Xenopronouns are not natural evolutions or adaptations of the English language, these are marxist subversions of the English language, as this explains. It's really called Demoralization: “What it basically means is: to change the perception of reality of every American to such an extent that despite of the abundance of information no one is able to come to sensible conclusions in the interest of defending themselves, their families, their community, and their country.” "“They are programmed to think and react to certain stimuli in a certain pattern [alluding to Pavlov]. You can not change their mind even if you expose them to authentic information. Even if you prove that white is white and black is black, you still can not change the basic perception and the logic of behavior.” "“As I mentioned before, exposure to true information does not matter anymore,” said Bezmenov. “A person who was demoralized is unable to assess true information. The facts tell nothing to him. Even if I shower him with information, with authentic proof, with documents, with pictures; even if I take him by force to the Soviet Union and show him [a] concentration camp, he will refuse to believe it, until he [receives] a kick in his fat-bottom. When a military boot crashes his balls then he will understand. But not before that. That’s the [tragedy] of the situation of demoralization.” - Yuri Bezmenov. "“[T]he useful idiots...when they get disillusioned, they become the worst enemies...obviously they get offended-they think that they will come to power. That will never happen, of course. They will be lined up against the wall and shot.” - Yuri Bezmenov. Yuri Bezmenov was a Soviet KGB propaganda officer in 1983 who defwcted to the west. It revolves around this concept of identity and Marxists (Socialist, so far left)change language to create identity groups so they can control people.

Hey guys! This is a really important topic that I think should be discussed more, I remember back in 2017-2019 when faking disorders were super common. Not as common as they are now though, but I remember everyone would call out those assholes that would fake those illnesses. I thought we all moved passed this horrible phase of pretending to be mentally ill. But I guess we haven't, which is very, very sad. I'd also like to point out how much of an issue this is on Pinterest, Pinterest has so many "whispers" people make (whispers being text you add to a "aesthetic" background) about suicide, depression, hating their parents, etc. Its absolutely revolting to go on Pinterest for inspiration only to be met with "star gender" people wishing their parents were in a fucking coma. It's awful, and I wish more people would talk about how much this is on every social media platform, and not just on Tiktok, Tumblr, and Twitter. It's nearly everywhere, and it's really really revolting. Also by "star" gender I mean how these teenagers on Pinterest always have those weird ass pronouns on their profiles. I also almost always see the biological girls that say they're boys do the fucked up whispers. We need to address this now! Thank you for the video, Misha, and you're so right about everything in this video! If you want to fake a disorder, just by default, you're not an okay person. Seriously, get some fucking help or something, don't just sit around or it'll be too late.

I feel like this was Tumblr getting revenge on the rest of us, because I've been around since the early days of Tumblr and this trash used to be contained to there. Suddenly Tumblr banned s*xual content and the flood gates opened. Stuff I'd only ever seen on Tumblr (your whispers being one of them) were all over everywhere that allowed image posting. Twitter, multiple art hosting sites, Pinterest, Instagram, Snapchat, the list goes on and on.

Misha, one caveat about mental health. I have a medically diagnosed ASD. If I could stop being autistic, I wouldn’t. It would erase my identity and everything that makes me unique and has some benefits too. I’m a functional person who’s in law school. Who has a normal social life and has worked full time before he was in law school. I do have other issues, like anxiety though, that having kind of sucks.

I remember developing maladaptive daydreaming at the age of 15 after being alone for like 2 years. Now with 19 I'm still alone and got worse, to the point of spending hours in that fantasy laughing straight alone in my room. I'm with you. Being autistic I can comfirm that it's something I'd rather be without. Because I've continued the trend of allowing myself to be weak and not better myself as a person from my childhood (my mom's contribution in form of coddling), I ended up getting a psychosis in 2014 and getting burnt out about six months ago. I just turned 35 and I can sit here and blame everything around me, but I'm an adult and I need to take responsibility of my inactivity. In addition, this is my 18th year of depression and I despise when weak minded, delusional people use that as a badge of honor. Real depression is easy to sink into and I have allowed that to dictate my actions. No one else to blame, but myself.

"What Remains of Edith Finch" is a video game where Lewis Finch perfectly embodies this "reality shifting" concept. Lewis essentially daydreams about video games, imagining that he is the main character and it lets his imagination run wild. It goes from little day dream trips to escale the monotony of his job to full on hallucinations that he never truly leaves. His mom notices this change and sends him to see a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist shows concern for Lewis' mental state, but Lewis pushes back saying "My imagination is as real as my body" and he cannot be convinced otherwise, which showcases how involved he is in his alternate reality. As the player, you get to see things through the eyes of Lewis. You get to witness his mind slipping inti madness in the first perspective and even though you as the player know its wrong you press onward through the dream. The imagined workd becomes so enveloping that the "imagined Lewis" is seen as the real Lewis while the real Lewis is seen as a boring nobody and only a distraction that gets in the way of the imaginary conquest of his imaginary world. And the madness wins in the end. I won't give any spoilers but the whole storyline for Lewis is on youtube. Its riveting to watch how quickly his mind deteriorates into his alternate reality. And even sadder watching those around him cope with his madness he allows himself to succumb to. It looks harmless at first but if left unchecked this kind of mentality can seriously ruin a person. Recognizing it is the first step to saving these people from themselves.

I'm someone who doesn't get into relationships... It's simply because of hookup culture. It doesn't suit me. I fear just being used for a fun few weeks then being ditched and having to go through that cycle over and over. I can't handle that, and it seems utterly miserable. I'm more of a "for life" girl. I want to completely trust someone and have them completely trust me. Also, as someone with anxiety... My mood does feel a lot better since I've started tackling my anxiety instead of just using it as an excuse to avoid everything. Self improvement is _extremely_ important!

As a Gen-Z Artist, I'm actually working my art series called "Escaping from reality" as it's all about using our imagination as It can tint memories of the past, shade perceptions of the present, or paint a future so vivid that it can entice or terrify, all depending upon how we conduct ourselves today. But i never thought people on tiktok would suggest such weird things? I do think escaping reality can be a good thing sometimes like if we allow ourselves to see our future self and work hard towards those goals and i completely agree with what you said....all of this shifting stuff is just weird, rather than looking for a shortcut we should work hard towards our goals and be the best versions of ourselves that way and imagination can help us get there....at least for me as an artist. Great video to be honest
