Gen Z teenagers often feel that they need to do everything as they prepare for their future - always doing, going, getting, and having - from their school work and testing to volunteering, friends, family and personal projects. And they're so enveloped in social media that there's a crushing pressure to be the perfect, well-rounded teen. As a result, Gen Z's mental wellness is being challenged, and often leads to depression, anxiety, even panic attacks.
Teens are so focused on the outside that they forget to focus on themselves too. That reality caused Myren to ask, "When will we get the chance to be?" In their view, Gen Z teenagers need to realize that it's okay to be still, to take breaks, mental health naps, and most importantly, to just be. Myren is a student at the School of Creative and Performing Arts. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. As a member of Gen Z I found it mildly funny that as she talked about teenagers having no time and feeling useless when they're not doing something because I realised that I was watching the video sped up to 1.25x during a study break so I wouldn't waste time.

the three most common phrases in high school now: “i’m tired” “i want to d*e” (or smth along these lines) “i’m gonna fail” “i don’t even care at this point” and this sums up our mental state.
@mistmoon1292

here's more: "I'm just going to skip school tomorrow, it doesn't matter at this point" "I'll do it later" "Hey what did you get?" "Hah I got a [insert number of points/letter grade]" "Oh no, I got one wrong" "I have a B my parents are gonna kill me" "I failed" (They got at 86, 90 or something higher than a C but not 100%) "Do we get extra credit?" (motivation to answer a question the teacher presents to the class that doesn't really need to be answered, but the teacher wants one anyway, and they have an A or B in the class) "I slept at 3, 4, or 5" or "I didn't sleep" usually followed by "I need Starbuck/coffee" "somebody kill me" (it's so common its basically a joke now unless they actually pull through with it) "Hah! Depression! What's that?" yep, we make jokes about killing ourselves, about our mental state, because honestly, all we can do is sit and laugh at it. There is absolutely nothing we can do to change it, we are stuck and we have no choice but to continue working or else we will fail.

I wish I could drop out of high school so bad. I went to the ER because my pulse was 160 and it turned out I had a panic attack/anxiety. I read 60-70 books a year to calm down yet I’m forced to go to school for 6-8 hours and my parents want me to have straight A’s. It took an ambulance ride to the ER for them to realize how bad my stress level was.

It gets worse when you consider how many members of gen Z already come from broken or single parent homes, add the insane expectations to an already unstable base and you’ve got a dreadful combo. The fear of doing poorly/letting your family down, the concern that you may be responsible for the state of your home life (especially given how hard a single parent normally works to give the child a life), any homework to be done, the stress of trying to hide bad grades from your family, having no good escape from the stress caused by either location, any form of news talking about the next thing that will “end the world” every other week, so on and so forth. Eventually it’s easier to question if it’s better to just give up, lay down and wait for death to come.

(Sorry, this is a long one...) Imagine piling any past traumatic events on top of that. I actually know from experience that the combination of a broken home, high expectations from a parent, and past traumatic events can be disastrous. I have so much difficulty communicating, feel isolated all the time, and stressed about even getting an A- in a class. I have recently been diagnosed with severe social anxiety and moderate depression, which despite me trying to address these problems with my mother, she brushed them all away and simply told me I'm not depressed and don't have anxiety. This is the same woman who told me at the beginning of cross country that if I didn't open up more then nobody would want to talk to me. The problems quite a bit of gen z face don't come from only one source, but so many that surround us. Parents expectations, school expectations and standards, media, and many more. Yet nobody seems to truly recognize these problems and directly address them. (I mean, it's pretty bad when your therapist basically tells you your only hope for a happy life at home is looking forward to getting the heck out of the family house because of how much stress your family is putting onto you despite the high stress they constantly acknowledge you have from school.)

Wolftamer Wolfcorp I was hoping someone would comment this. I can’t take any “mental health days” because staying away from school (my source of respite from home) takes an even bigger toll on my mental health. The one good thing my mother has done is restrict me from the possibilities offered to Gen Z. Her actions and intentions are horrid (one of her many ways of punishing me is by intentionally stopping me from chasing my passions and forcing me out of opportunities that can change my life, sometimes even threatening to take me out of school so that I can prioritize her control over me over my education... her words, not mine) but all that it has taught me is how much I need to appreciate every single opportunity offered to me. My mom gives me extra motivation to wake up, use my time wisely, and stop stressing about everything, because I live with someone who will always hinder me from achieving what I want in life... and that just motivates me to chase my dreams even more. I’d rather be swamped with possibilities than shut down from all of them. Being successful by pursuing my dreams is spiting the person who raised me and told me that I will be nothing without her when I get older, so that’s what I will do.

She is so right. I think education and the job market especially is getting increasingly more competitive because of the notion that people have to be "well-rounded". Others assume that, because we have so much readily-available information, that we have to be smarter, but that's just not the case. This idea just pressures young people to 'be perfect', which increases anxiety. I fear for this generation, to be honest.

I find my grades very interesting. It's kinda weird. Grades are letters on a piece of paper. Maybe there's a note from the teacher. However, I've noticed a pattern. Elementary school, I was curious about everything, from that weird, latex flat balloon on the ground to that crow that stole someone else's sandwich. And this shows. I was deeply invested in all my classes. I participated in discussions with my classmates. I got a straight A honor roll on a regular basis. But every so often there was a B. And in my household with a dad who is smart enough to manage a particle accelerator and a mom who grew up in poverty but now makes good money at a hospital, anything lower than an A was unacceptable. An A- was questionable at best. My first year in Middle school was about the same, but over the next 3 years, more Bs and even Cs became prominent. There was even a D. I was so devastated that I struggled to hide my report card, which my parents got in the mail, for fear of their wrath. High school definitely shows how much changed, almost exponentially. It didn't help that my sophomore year I fell off my bike and couldn't go to school because the resulting injury left my body very weak. That was the first time I ever failed a class. When I saw that F, I strapped the backbrace back on and punished myself by constricting myself until my stomach was in the general area of my thyroid. 12th grade, I had the first teacher ever who actively supported me and my mental wellbeing. He was always worried whenever I just looked a little sad. It wasn't just me that he fought to support. It was everyone in the school. Every student, every teacher, every janitor, every lunch lady. And not only was he a really awesome guy, he was the first teacher I had who made his class so much fun that I couldn't *not* pay attention to his lecture. His enthusiasm shined through, and his joy for history and teaching was absolutely contagious. That was the first A I had in a class in a long time.

History teachers are usually the nicest. I think it's because they have to muddle through all the BS humans have done in the past and they are able to see how they can prevent making the same mistakes, and that there are many sides to any given story. @@suki_yue_6366 Same. I want to help the world's current state, but my interests and passions are so far from that. Maybe it's plausible to do both at the same time, to try and help the earth with the grounding of the passion job we want, yknow? I think- overall, it would probably be better for our mental health to do what we enjoy rather than what we think other people will enjoy. Of course, helping the planet doesn't always mean we need to have a job that directly helps it, I've seen tons of volunteer organizations for helping out in a hands-on manner and such, even if it's not directly in the mix of sciences or politics. I hope you find what you enjoy, though! I've heard that it's like trial and error when it comes to jobs- like, how are we supposed to know what job we want to set out for when we've never worked in the field before? This education system really needs to educate itself up to modern common sense, tbh.

Idk if this is just for where I’m at you’re not allowed to have a mental breakdown cause there will be people (yes including kids are age) saying stuff like “oh stop faking” or “your just wanting attention” or even “much people have it worse then you” so you really have to just numb yourself so you can get through all of this and it doesn’t help with the older generation just expecting so much from us when we’re just kids. Honestly I’m 12 and I’m already having midlife crisis and making plans for what I’ll do in the future. All the older generations don’t know the amount of stress gen z have to go through and they just stuck it onto “being edgy teens” I’m sorry this has been a mess haha

I can definitely relate to that, although I was pressured into beginning to think about my future by the age of 8. I cried over a B on my report card. I'm currently a high school junior taking much higher level classes, but I still get a lot of pressure to look into college RIGHT now, and to keep all my grades up. Last year I took a lot of advanced classes; AP computer science principles, honors chemistry, honors english, etc. One of my favorite teachers (he teaches Physics for me currently) even acknowledged that as a 15-16 year old I was already living the life of a college student. That isn't necessarily a good thing though, since I was getting such a small amount of sleep, going to school, participating in practice, doing all my homework, and heading straight to bed. That was my life my sophomore year.

Trust that if you work on accepting that life is unpredictable and that you don't have to know everything right now, it will get better. I felt exactly the same way as you do at 12, and I'm sorry you're feeling it, because I know how draining it is. Know the work you're putting in to feel okay is working, albeit slowly. I have struggled with chronic anxiety my entire life and the ways it manifests change. Yet, I'm learning new ways to cope even now. You are heard. You aren't alone. And it really is okay to not know what you're doing next (I know the schools will say otherwise infinitely, that doesn't make them right).

SO MY MENTAL HEALTH IS T H R I V I N G Edit: so it’s 5 months later, I’m currently in therapy. I was diagnosed by a psychiatrist with major depression and anxiety, which explains a lot. My anxiety levels have gone down a lot since school has been let out due to corona. I haven’t been cutting NEARLY as much. I’m doing better. I’m seeing a therapist once a week. update #2: yall im happy more days than not. Haven’t self harmed in over a year Update #3 hey. I’m noticing this comment is still getting replies so I figured I’d pop in and say a few words. I have been happy for more than a year. I have my moments, but I no longer have crashes that result in the use of horrible coping mechanisms. I try to make the best of my life and live as happily as I can. I believe that if something makes me happy, it should remain in my life. And if it doesn’t make me happy, then it has no use taking up my time. Thanks to everyone for sending beautiful messages. @Simon is dead excuse me but I think you're wrong. I get therapy without medication and it still helps. Even IF you take medication, why is it that big of a deal? I mean, if you have a chemical imbalance in your body, why would you choose to suffer over taking some medication? I really hope you will change your mind on that topic because I think you don't quite understand how mental illnesses work. You don't CHOOSE to be ill, you just are. Why is it legitimate to take medication for something like asthma but something like depression is somehow different? Why? You wouldn't tell a person with asthma to 'just breath' so why would you tell a depressed person to 'just be happy'? I really want to understand why you disagree with me, so please explain. Maybe I just don't get what you truly mean or at least I hope so.
@simplymarvelousliving
@simplymarvelousliving 4 жыл бұрын
just a random user Exactly. Certain people are prone to depression and anxiety simply by genetics. That doesn't make these feelings less valid, and it certainly doesn't change the emotional issue, but it makes it less of an uphill battle. Chemical imbalances in the brain are a serious problem, that, frankly, aren't given enough attention. So often, people are told to "toughen up," even if it is physically impossible simply because of genetics, vitamins, and hormone imbalance. It's no different than any other physical condition. That asthma analogy was incredibly accurate- you are born with a condition, so why would you rather suffer through it when there is help so obviously in front of you? Medicine is not something that makes you less of a person, it helps you. Why wouldn't you take that opportunity?

I find that school takes away from being human. As adults, you don't have to bring work home and have a life go live. As students, we even get summer homework and over the summer we feel like we have to work. We spend 8-9 hours at school and the other three are spent doing after school activities and homework we feel that if we don't do, we won't get into college and we won't succeed in life. Over this quarantine, I've been much happier, and have been doing the things I've wanted to do with myself like caring for my body. School, feels more like a prison than anything else.

Dear any parents reading this: dont say things like "look who's finally out of their room" or "welcome back to society" when we come out of our rooms after a long time in there. It only makes us want to go back in.

This hits home hard. We are groomed to expect that we are disposable; and to keep ahead we must exist in the constant state of panicked achievement. Speaking to any of the older generations about expectations of life, the bar is so low in comparison the younger generation.

Yeah, I know older folk are trying their best to give us advice.. but (especially baby boomers) lived in a flourishing post-war economy. College was affordable with little to no debt, and technology wasn't mandatory everywhere. :( we have nobody to rely on except ourselves.

I remember during my gcses setting rest days into my time table. I showed my time table to my private tutor thinking she would set the days I saw her to when I was already studying her subject. Instead she set them to my rest day. this lead to me taking even more rest days and really struggling to have a time table. This was about 15 years ago. It saddens me that instead of getting better, adults are even more naive to the point of rest.

It's crazy how our generation has to do things like "mental health days" as teens that overwhelmed mid-twenty somethings are portrayed doing. We aren't children anymore, or aren't allowed to be. Adults are pushing and pushing us forward but all we end up doing is running up against the glass wall of age restrictions and their own aging values that no longer align with that they are telling us. It's so two-faced it's exhausting.

It’s so stressful and as soon as I have a moment to myself, all I hear is how lazy I am to be online all the time and not working. I’ve come to become stressed when I’m NOT doing something. I got transferred to homeschool at age 12 (7th grade) and I absolutely dread it. It’s been horrible, I genuinely lost interest in my life because teachers and people have pressured me into trying to have great grades and it really changed me. Never getting proper mental health help either has destroyed my motivation, I’m currently in 11th grade. Going into 12th and I’m terrified to Graduate, I don’t have enough credits to graduate because my motivation keeps going up and down like a rollercoaster. Ive wanted to be an artist for ages. And that is what keeps me going. Life is crushing. Teens are too young to understand and too old to do certain things without judgement. I finally got diagnosed with depression, anxiety, PTSD, High functioning autism and ADHD, ADHD and HTA has really affected me in learning. Adding more pressure to my life. I have breakdowns every few months. I have genuinely wanted to end my life to get rid of the pressure at some points. And i can feel the pressure from other people my age. So yeah..I agree with what she said.

I'm a millennial, and I don't think I actually have any useful advice to Gen Z's. But I'd like to say that, had I grown up in this day's age of technology and social media, I'm not sure how I'd survive :( Hang in there, dear young ones. It's true that what doesn't kill you will only make you stronger. Remember to be kind to others, and equally important is be kind to YOURSELF. You will never be able to please everyone, so I guess my advice to everyone is: As long as you're not hurting anyone, do whatever it is that makes you happy. Stay strong! :D

I'm a millennial born in 1988. I really feel bad for Gen Z because I too suffer from the pressure and anxiety in the connected world. But the difference is that a part of my life happened before the internet. So much of the purity and joy I experienced during those years still make up the core of who I am today, which provided me with a perspective that has kept me healthy and centered most of my life.

This hits very hard. I worked hard during high school, and so am now finishing up my freshman year at Georgetown University. After graduation (finishing the IB program) I have found it very difficult to open a textbook in my freetime or even get up in the morning after having spent years getting only 3-5 hours of sleep per night. I need a break... but I don't have anywhere to go that doesn't have high expectations of me and mental wellness retreats cost a lot.

THIS! The constant need to prepare for every oppertunity, and to have all of those achievements BEYOND just being smart destroyed my highschool experience. I was being asked what college I wanted to go in middle school. That 6 years before I was anywhere close to having to make the decision. I began to hate the very idea of college, but preparing for anything and everything in future was so ingrained into me that I felt forced to take classes that would look good to colleges instead of the ones I was actually interested in taking. I hated every second of it, and you can see it reflected in my transcripts. Gen Z has an impossible culture of perfection, being well rounded, and being expected to have your next 20 years already planned out, and I hate it. I have never empathized with a Gen Z video as much as I have this one.

When I was a junior in high school I would pull an all nighter every week just to get all my work done. I was so beyond stressed and pressured and felt like I had to be doing everything all the time. When I got into my first semester of college I went off the deep end. For the first time I could chose whether or not to do my work, whether or not to care, how to prioritize my time, and I was grossly irresponsible because it just felt so good to not have that pressure on me and I took full advantage of that at the cost of my GPA. The life we are living isn’t preparing us for the real world or how to be responsible adults, it’s just acts like any other social media profile where others think the more impressive it looks the more put together we must be which is just so far from the truth. This is a problem that needs fixed.
