Denzel Washington hardly ever makes a bad movie. I've enjoyed most of his movies. So many of them. Crimson Tide, Out of Time, Man on Fire, Training Day, The Pelican Brief, the Manchurian Candidate, Inside Man, Courage Under Fire, Fallen, John Q, Safe House, The Equalizer, Virtuacity, The Seige, Deja Vu, etc etc etc

I did not expect their to be a 6 minute segment of “why did Will Smith never become Daniel Day Lewis” ... what the hell was that lol. His blockbuster run was insane and he made some great different genre flicks ... Pursuit Of Happiness, Hitch, Legend Of Bagger Vance ... all classics in their own right. Hancock aged ridiculously well. I Robot and I Am Legend I can watch now ... yeah he turned down Neo and Django. Okay man lol ... it’s okay. He survived lol

Right?! I'm kind of surprised that no one is bringing up the fact that unlike the movie stars he's being compared to, Will Smith is NOT a traditionally trained actor by any means. Dude didn't go to Juliard, or come up wanting to be on stage as an actor. He was a Rapper, first and foremost. The dude's first acting gig came strictly because he was known for his success in a completely different medium, and was GIVEN the deal without an audition. He even acknowledges that when he got the show, no one thought to ask him if he could act. In the context of musicians/music artists transitioning to film, Will Smith is undoubtedly the most successful. The dude was known as one-half of DJ Jazzy jeff and the Fresh Prince; why the fuck would you expect him to become Daniel Day Lewis?!

You say this movie's ahead of it's time, but I always thought this was exactly of its time. It came out right as some of the surveillance technology was crossing over to the civilian sector, but before 9/11 and the Patriot Act. It's basically a 70s political thriller a la the Conversation, Parallax View, 3 Days of the Condor, updated to the early Internet age.

Funniest (and most ironic) Will Smith move being just a small role lending his star power to a movie that ended up backfiring: his cameo playing himself in Kevin Smith's Jersey Girl when he runs into Ben Affleck's character who was fired from the company representing Smith at the time of Fresh Prince simply cuz he didn't see Smith as a movie star and his appearance as the wise advisor unknowingly helping Affleck who never believed in him in a movie that was doomed before it was even seen thanks to the humongous flop Gigli is just such a waste of that very move of being a less-is-more big reveal cameo.

I think Will Smith got type cast early with Sci Fi movies. I do think he was good in this movie, although he was carried by Hackman. He definitely benefited from playing next to really good people, like Hackman or Tommy Lee Jones in Men in Black. I do think Pursuit of Happiness is easily his best performance in my view.

This movie is a masterpiece and i don't use that word lightly ..i mean it when I say it..its without a doubt my favorite Tony Scott(and i love pretty much all his movies) film and probably my favorite from Will too..the cast is crazy, the story never slows down but doesn't go so fast where it lost me and i first saw it in 1999 when i was 13 ..its only gotten better as my knowledge grew though that also revealed some flaws but they're nitpicks when so much in this movie is done right...the shit they do with technology in this movie i remember thinkin it was impossible when I first saw it but ffwd almost 25 years and i realize what they did was most likely more than possible even back then..but the cast has to be one of my favorites in any movie, tv show etc with Will and Gene both effortlessly elevating the movie but then u got Jon Voight(i love that guy in everything ive ever seen him in) Regina King, Tom Sizemore,Barry Pepper,Jack Black,Jake Busey, Scott Caan, Jason Lee... the cast has to be my favorite part of the film but the story is also pretty amazing and Tony's direction only makes things better...it's a High Full Price of a movie for me...I've seen it at least 50 times and it never gets old and almost certainly never will..i hope u resting peacefully Tony

Will Smith is a wonderful, successful movie star and he doesn't need any of us tell what he should have or should've not done with his career. With that said, bless his heart, I thought he was going to be the next Denzel and he wasn't (in terms of acting I mean) and I do feel a little disappointed in how his career turned out vis a vis what is considered "serious acting". You can chalk up turning down The Matrix as a mistake, pretty much every big movie star has at least one role that they turned down that they might regret (or that others judge to be a mistake), but turning down Django Unchained told me everything I needed to know about him. He just doesn't want "that" and I have made peace with it, not that he is asking me for advice or anything.
@75aces97
@75aces97 4 жыл бұрын
Agree. Will Smith is one of those figures who's a movie star and feels like he should be, yet looking at his filmography, he has so few movies I actually like. To be fair about Django, after the Wild Wild West debacle, Will Smith in a retro cowboy outfit probably would have tanked the movie. It could have derailed his career.

Pursuit of happyness has become an underrated classic movie and performance in my opinion. There’s genuinely only a handful of guys that could’ve sold that performance that was completely reliant on you having complete sympathy for the character but also seeing that he’s at times the architect of his own demise, there’s legitimately maybe 5 actors that could’ve done that final scene and sold the emotion like he did. And also Believe me I 100% get it I am legend was more of a blockbuster movie but I feel like that movie is a legitimately good movie and whatever you think of that movie I have no problem With anyone disagreeing cause I know it’s more of a mixed review type movie but you’re not telling me his performance alone wasn’t amazing again probably only Denzel at that time could’ve done what will was doing in that movie in terms of his acting choices and how he went about portraying the character no actor can portray vulnerability and self doubt like will Smith

@@josh0253 EXACTLY!! That why I was so confused especially since Bill is such a movie freak haha. The fact that I was angry with his decisions yet also cared about his family just made it even more amazing. The ending scene was amazing but to me, the bathroom scene really hit home. As someone who has had to go through homelessness as a kid, it really showed two sides of his character. Able to create a world that his kid will be distracted by while also taking a silent moment to himself to realize where he is and what he needs to do in life. As much as people hate Will Smith for whatever reason the man can act, rap, and just provided everyone with so many good moments in life.

Will Smith may have a lot money making movies or made a lot of money-makers, but he stinks as an actor. "A chance to be the next Denzel"? Are you freaking kidding me? He's not 10% of an actor as Denzel. Whenever he tries to be "serious," it comes off as fake and cheap.
