I've been in a party in a villa, the sound on the patio/terrace was only made by two genelec 8361 (placed low tilted up) and one Rythmik audio servo sub and this was the best sound I ever enjoyed, the level was never above 85db in the meds and 96 db in the sub bass, and even if the outside area was large, the clarity and the air was so nice, this made my decision : one day I will get some of those. It's even more convincing to actually listen to those than to understand technical reviews, but both are related. The person doing the setup told that he do not want to put them ear level, to avoid discomfort for people standing close to the speakers. By putting them low and tilted up the on axis reach the ears at several meters distance, allowing comfort for everyone, and I think it's a good way of doing this. Those are not very directional. Sound change very little when walking around ( as long as you stay in a range where you can see both speakers front face ). The sound was both sharp and also smooth as silk. Delicious.

@@cwctw Good question, it shouldn't, not if it's implemented correctly... quite the opposite subjectively, ie., a well blended sub system contributes positively in soundstage characteristics. However, if it's detrimental to the soundstage... then the overall subjective benefit of the greater LF capability must outweigh the diminished dimensionality... which sucks because that’s oftentimes a track by track decision.

I can absolutely confirm your measurements and your impressions. They are perfect monitors and when combined with the right subwoofer, they are really fun - even for higher SPL. Take a look at the Genelec subwoofers and the SAM metering electronics. The only drawback is, that they are so perfectly neutral that it's almost boring again. I'm not sponsored by Genelec, but I've been working with them now for two years.

Switched 4 years ago from ,,normal,, passive Hifi stuff to active Studio Stuff (Ksdigital, Neumann & now Unity Audio) and i want never go back. You get so much quality and intersting new concepts nowadays in the Active Gear section. I heard the 8341 ~10 years ago and it was by far my most memorable Listening session. You realy need to ask why the High end stuff from Magico, Wilson Benesch, B&W etc. and similiar brands ar epriced so high when you get nearly zero benefits from them compared to a 10k Product wich already Active (incl Amps)… For me the times of passive is over, Active is the modern way of producing loudspeaker for the highest performance

First, I just want to say thanks for all the effort and hard work you put into your videos: it's nice to see the passion combined with the engineering aspect of this hobby. I do have a question. I'm thinking of building a home theatre dedicated room using active monitors instead of traditional passive speakers with amplifiers (combined, of course, with multiple subs). In your opinion are these small active monitors capable of reaching the sound pressure levels and the dynamic range needed for this setup considering the approximate dimensions of the room: 19feet x 16feet x 8,5 feet H with multiple seating?

I really can recommend Nubert for your purpose. Their speakers are tuned neutral. I am using the NuPro XS-4000 RC as my monitor speakers. They are bookshelf speakers, but they are punching well above their league. My room is around 12m², so less than half of your room. They are also offering big active tower speakers and a massive soundbar (XS-8500 RC) that weighs around 40kg. I got the prev model. Long story short: You can connect any Nupro active speakers wirelessly to that soundbar, because it also functions as a control center. So you can go from 2.1 to 7.1. You can also add a subwoofer, but trust me: The base on that soundbar is fking massive. Also all speakers can be room corrected with their own app, that is what the RC stands for. If you have an Iphone you don't need an additional mic. If you are on Android, just buy the recommended usb c mic for like 30 bucks. I really recommend you checking them out. They are a german company, if this matters to you. Maybe this is exactly what you are looking for. www.nubert.de/lautsprecher/aktivlautsprecher/

Got these and paired them with a 7350a sub. My current listening room (aka living room/kitchen/homeoffice, 5x6m) is untreated and GLM does a great job covering the bad room acoustics. Listening distance is 1,5m and with output level set to -50 dB the volume at the listening position is about 81-87 dB. Setting the output to -40 dB results in up to 95 dB - too much for me.

Hi Erin, I am curious about these speakers used in an LCR configuration, for a home theater. Is this how you tested these speakers for your listening test? Thanks in advance.

I'm also considering Kali IN-5 for the only reason that they have the volume know, which -- unless I am mistaken, lowers the amplifier gain and reduced hiss further.

The biggest difference with the Genelec is that the floor and ceiling bounce will sound more similar to the on axis sound, and when you are off axis the Genelec will sound about the same to an even greater extent vertically than the other coaxials, though both the Kali and the Kef will do great compared to typical noncoaxial speakers.

@ErinsAudioCorner
@ErinsAudioCorner 2 жыл бұрын
1-2m I’d call near to midfield. I’d generally say 2-3 meters and beyond is where you’re getting into farfield. However, *technically speaking*, the farfield is the point where all drivers sum together. But in the context of mixing/monitoring, I go by distance since most monitors’ drivers are summed by 1m. Hope that helps. 👍

You'll still get a great stereo image if the room and placement are symmetrical, but you'll also get some bass unevenness and correcting that and using the "sound character profiler" to taste adds a lot, not to mention it's only $200 which is less than most any other room correction system.

@Erin: if it's hard to qualify the 8331a because they have no major flaws, would it be an idea to compare them to their bigger brothers to see what the differences are? Because the numbers say the 8341 and 8361 have lower bass extension I would expect a noticable difference for different applications.
@Gamez4eveR
@Gamez4eveR 2 жыл бұрын
as usual with Genelec, I'd expect the main differences to be in low end extension as you mentioned and in output capacity. 8361a for example handles distortion better at 96dB @1m than 8331a at 86dB (even if just a little bit). That means you have just as clean an output on the big boy at essentially twice the output level than the small ones

@ErinsAudioCorner
@ErinsAudioCorner 2 жыл бұрын
The CEA-2034 measurements are taken at about 80-86dB. Since this is a powered speaker, the input voltage to achieve that SPL level - with the gain at max - was around 0.05v (if memory serves). However, the software scales to a voltage. In this case it scales to 0.30v for powered speakers. I can change that manually but I don’t because it’s a bit of a hassle. For passive speakers, however, the input voltage is always 2.83v, per the specification. Hope that helps.

@ErinsAudioCorner
@ErinsAudioCorner 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. I actually discussed this in the video but edited it out because I went on for five minutes about it. But, yes. Although the ratio is altered based on how close you sit and the relative distance of boundaries. I imagine most who buy this speaker do so for its size. And therefore it is reasonable to conclude those users are also sitting in a (relatively) smaller room, with nearby walls. The one difference you’ll notice is that the nearfield response will look more like the direct (on-axis) response, the further away from boundaries you are. However, consider this speaker is about +/-50 degrees out to 20kHz which is relatively wide (at this frequency) so you are likely to have a decent bit of sidewall reflection even at the HF. Again, this is all relative and your distance from the speaker and the walls will alter the results.

My experience with Genelec’s is that they almost sound too good. Like, everything just immediately sounds amazing! Yes they have great clarity and would certainly work for mixing, but I sometimes ask myself whether it “making everything sound better immediately” is something you want in that kind of setting. Sure, they sound amazing and I’d love to have a pair, but I really wonder if they really are the better choice over, say , much more “immediate” sounding Adam’s.
@BogdanWeiss

"too good" ? is a very strange description for a loudspeaker ;-) maybe if you define your benchmark as "real acoustic instruments/vocals" then every loudspeaker becomes "not quite there" in terms of recreating an acoustic event ?
@yona9798
@yona9798 2 жыл бұрын
@@BogdanWeiss I understand the confusion and absolutely agree. However, that is not what I meant. To me all Genelec's I've heard sounded incredible, definitely, but to a point, where I wouldn't mind some things I would have on other speakers. I don't want to say they "sweeten" the sound, but I guess I kind of do mean that. Everything just sounds so damn good on them. They are obviously much better suited for mixing than random high-fi speakers or budget monitors, but I'm wondering whether that might be a problem with them when actually mixing (compared to other high-end speakers). I imagine you could overlook some problems you wouldn't with speakers that sound "worse". Kind of like people used NS10's or the current Yamaha HS series. Sure, they sound terrible and you wouldn't want to use them to actually listen to music, but a lot of people think their mixes translate great when checked on them because "if it sounds good on those it sounds good anywhere". Again, I'm not saying they are bad monitors at all, they are absolutely incredible speakers, if I ever buy high end monitors, I will absolutely consider them. But I will want to test every pair of speakers by actually mixing through them and comparing the results. (or something like that)

@@yona9798 It's interesting to hear how different people approach mixing/monitoring & indeed a lot of great music was mixed using the infamous NS10's - The best pair of Genelec's that I've heard have been discontinued ( 3 way with a 10" woofer, edgeless mid & waveguided tweeter) driven by a Bricasti DAC - so I think this had quite an impact on overall quality. Experienced "punters" can pull-off seemingly impossible feats of audio recording/mixing. Like recording/monitoring in the field with a tiny 3.5" full range speaker & headphones ( for bass ) BUT these are highly experienced engineers, familiar with the entire recording process & in-depth knowlidge of microphones/placement/instrument polar radiation patterns. Vifa will sound more correct, controled, neutral and sweeter with deaper bass and I can't think of single advantage of Kefs other than ability to separate them but Vifa is quite wide so you will also hear some stereo... @BoredErica As Erin mentioned in the video, the LED power/clip indicator light on the front panel can be turned OFF using the rear DIP switches. And to my ears, the One series Genelecs sound superior to the LS50 Meta in regards to detail/clarity/imaging/soundstage...and even bass response. But I can understand how a monitor or loudspeaker "looks" can be subjective and carries more weight in your purchase decision if you would be using these as home HiFi speakers and not for professional tracking/mixing/mastering that they were developed for. They are entirely different, but I love the "look" (and sound) of the Børresen Acoustics #01 & #03 loudspeakers for home HiFi use.

What kind of system are you making? For me there are no competitors to Genelec if you want to build an immersive system. Dutch and Dutch doesn't have a versatile option for a center channel for example. Or mounting. Or multiple sizes. Or coaxial flexibility for vertical dispersion when placing height channels. From the comparisons I've read about you're going to be amazed with any of them for stereo. However, even for stereo, if you want to go to the extremes you'll need multiple subs for the Dutch and Dutch, and something like the Kii will need a BXT module, which Genelec had a large range of larger and smaller subs plus their W371 which integrates perfectly with the ones.

@@ErinsAudioCorner You're mixing apples with oranges. You can't compare Studio Monitors and HiFi Speakers. Genelec have always been groundbreaking on their designs but they were never into concentric designs except 'The Ones' series and they've nailed it, I agree. Tannoy however was the pioneer in concentric designs since the 60's, that's what I'm saying. I don't follow much hifi speakers and I don't really know about the throat termination to the tweeter you mentioned, nevertheless Tannoy's Dual Concentric design has always been leading in phase coherence and point-source imaging. They also implemented a new HF Tulip Waveguide on their last 'Gold' monitor series which gives even better symmetrical dispersion, broader ( 90 by 90) soundstage and more focused stereo imaging. You should test them sometime and you'll understand what I'm talking about. Although based in Europe, I'm not a fan of European Speaker designs with Tannoy the only exception.

If there nothing negative to say about this speaker, and most speakers are vastly different than this speaker... Time to start bagging on the wretched stuff out there? Have an expensive speaker that doesn't use nearly the entire front baffle as the waveguide? DO BETTER. Not using a curved cabinet and minimizing diffraction and scattering internal reflections and creating a more rigid structure without taking up internal volume? That's LAZY. Not using a coaxial driver that allows you to place the speaker sideways as a center channel, and creating poor vertical dispersion which is important because ceilings exist in almost all listening rooms and sometimes are closer than the walls? STOP IT. I wish more companies would begin to think about attempting to maybe compete with Genelec. The extent to which we appreciate a state of the art speaker should correlate with how much we don't respect speakers at similar or higher prices that aren't state of the art. Focal, B&W, and JBL (unless you are going for loudness) come to mind. Can you imagine one of these the size of the JBL M2? It would be an utter embarrassment, and the 8361 already has peak SPL higher than the M2. (124dB vs 123dB per pair if I'm reading the peak SPL correctly.)
@ErinsAudioCorner
@ErinsAudioCorner 2 жыл бұрын
