It may have been a practical consideration as well; livestock requires a lot of care and feeding, after all, and the colonists may not have been comfortable being away from them too far. Keep in mind, as late as the mid-1400's, livestock wasn't kept in a barn in most cases, but *in the home* where they could be cared for through the winter, and served as additional sources of heat as well.

A ships is a reflection of the series itselve. If a ship is dull and lifeless than thats usually the same for the show.

It would fight to the death and serve you loyally. Or treat it poorly and it could be your enemy. These days the ships are all computer copypasta. They all look alike, they're not individuals. They're somewhat impressive only because they show up in implausibly vast numbers.

The phaser training room likely used the modified pulse beam idea. (Essentially phaser setting 1) they have also in the tech manual that settings 1-3 will not penetrate the hull so likely using that material here.

Basically it's the same as using a LASER Tag (game) weapon to train for using Military Grade LASER Rifles on the battlefield...the Training gun can't hurt you while the Battle field gun will burn a hole right through you...

Imagine if we could have another show on a galaxy class with all the modern effects allowing for a full utilization of those concepts.

They put a lot of detail into it for a few reasons. The people involved in that era of Star Trek were avidly passionate fans of Star Trek. What Star Trek meant to them before, what they believed Star Trek could be again. They deliberately invested tons of work and exhaustive detail in the beginning because they expected deep setting to provide a rich basin narratives could draw from - and they planned the extra startup work to payoff in the long term with lower production costs across multiple seasons. And, of course, they knew that every little scrap of every little concept they made would eventually become a valuable commodity for enthusiasts. Star Trek has always made far more money from merchandising, games, books, comics, toys, collectibles, replicas, and licenses than from cinema and television.

I mean they went directly from separation to crashing and they didn't have any choice in the matter. I wouldn't really try to pop escape pods when you're already in the atmosphere. If they had ejected pods as their main escape tactic many of them would probably have been destroyed outright or sent down to the planet and by the explosion like the saucer was. I would rather make that trip in a quarter million tons of duranium personally.

I assume that the escape pods wouldn't have been able to survive the shockwave from the warp core breach, and then once it hit, there wasn't enough time to get people into them and launch before they were entering the planet's atmosphere. They had some time between entry and actually hitting the ground though. You'd think they could have launched a few then. Maybe they lost power? Although, if anything needs to be able to operate in minimal power conditions, it's the escape pods!

Come on, a Borg cube couldn't destroy the D but a 20 year old BOP could. Logic systems go offline if the script calls for it.

@@pokes404 The Saucer was the best bet _until_ after the secondary hull's warp core exploded and the explosion damaged the Saucer so badly that it started a death dive into the atmosphere. It was only through skillful piloting by a superhuman Android that prevented it becoming a crater on the planet's surface … and even then a lot of people would have been injured flying into walls and bulkheads when it suddenly braked on the surface. The smart move would have been to go for a escape pod after the warp core blast wave hit and it became obvious the Saucer was going to crash into the planet. At that point if you abandon ship you'll end up drifting nicely in orbit with weeks of supplies, watching to see whether the Saucer is splattered across the landscape below - and it it doesn't then the pod can do a controlled landing nearby. The only thing that could hurt you drifting in orbit is if something really out of left field happened … Like the local Star going supernova.

@@casbot71 That's why I was thinking there may have been some reason they couldn't launch the escape pods. Loss of power, too dangerous to launch them while plummeting into a planet's atmosphere, traveling too fast in atmosphere to safely launch them, etc. Of course, this is also the same movie that showed ships flying into a space ribbon and then half an hour later told us that ships can't fly into said space ribbon. There wasn't much logic put into the driving force behind the movie's plot ... I'm guessing there was zero logic applied to why the Enterprise didn't use her escape pods.

Ditto. The same reason they eventually made the helm and navigation into one station. It's a cheat to use only the principal characters as much as possible.

Keep in mind the 4:3 aspect ratio of TV's in the 80's/90's. Those people at those work stations wouldn't be visible. They redesigned the bridge and put those people there to fill out the wide screen of the movie theatre.

Officially, the federation only uses currency of any sort for trade with other civilizations. Unofficially, you can't replicate a million concert tickets for a venue that suits 10000 people. Well, you could, I guess, but it wouldn't go well. So there must be some system for organizing who gets time on the holodeck when, and I suppose some form of social credits would make sense. Or maybe it's all a first come first serve sorta thing. If the barber is busy, you get scheduled for when they aren't, or if a concert is sold out, you can use holodeck time to go anyway. Idk currency free economics are basically just speculation at this point, and may not ever be practical.

I think you see the replomat in the Season 4 episode “Data’s Day” where Data and Worf are picking out wedding gifts for Keiko and Chief O’Brien.

Evacuation at higher capacities was probably based on either saucer separation or a combination of escape pods and shuttle craft / runabouts. We know the main shuttle bay was actually quite large from the technical manuals and the ship carried personnel and cargo shuttles as well as shuttlepods and other auxiliary craft.

Agree with what you've both said particularly given as you've rightly said the auxiliary craft within an auxiliary craft, saucer separation and shuttlebay.

By "current ships" do you mean 21st century maritime ships? If so, the requirement is no less than 50% capacity port and starboard, totalling a minimum of 100%

Worf said you would die if standing in the fire when it went off. Of course, if it shuts off when the fire is out, you could be resuscitated.

Not sure about the Enterprise D, but the Enterprise E seems to know not to do that: There was a scene in "Star Trek: Insurrection" where a crew member in engineering was on fire during a battle, and was extinguished by being sprayed with some kind of futuristic hand-held fire extinguisher.

If I remember correctly a Galaxy class could cary around 50 small crafts, including runabouts workerbees and shuttles. The main shuttle bay is massive and multiple storys tall. It is basically a full sized airport.

The Cetacean nav lab was because some dolphin like intelligent species had the ability to use/calculate/manipulate string theory for navigation. I don't remember how the book evolved out but I do remember thinking water mammals on the Enterprise, weird idea.

Budget constraints suck... Even if they did it all digitally with green screening backgrounds it would still take someone time and money to make the virtual sets. Cheaper, but still costly.

Just like in our days. Our "troop ships" of the 21st century are literally the cruise liners. The cruise companies have it in their contract that in case of an evacuation or when you have to redo the D-Day again they have to offer their ships for free to the military (and as most of them are based in Panama, that's the US navy of course)

@@acmenipponair yeah the airlines have a similar deal. In exchange for some of the perks they get from the government they have to agree to support MAC. We saw this in 90 for desert shield. Constant stream of civilian airliners was the only way we were able to move 100k troops to Saudi Arabia in days. But your example of cruise ships has had a real world example. The UK conscripted the Queen Elizabeth 2 for use as a troop transport for the Falklands war.

In the show, and the manual, security lock outs are mentioned. So it's reasonable to assume that such changed would be difficult to make without alerting the crew or the computer in some way that you're trying to do a naughty. In some cases you'd need special high level command codes to make changes (which was also done on the show). Still, if someone is intelligent enough to hack their way through all of that I suppose it could be possible. Or perhaps many of these systems have hard-coded limitations that would be very very difficult to bypass. (but still possible if you were incredibly smart). Still, it's not something you could just waltz in and do in a few moments.

@@ShalmendoGlineux Like I said, I'm sure the ship's main computer has info security systems and intrusion countermeasures. It's just that I suspect they trust those security systems a bit too much, like people who go around saying they don't need antivirus software because they use a Mac. In general, the main computer isn't all that great at alerting the crew to weird things going on that they really should look into. For example, it didn't see fit to alert anyone about crewmen, officers no less, randomly disappearing and reappearing without explanation (as in the episodes 'Schisms' and 'Q Who'), or unknown entities like the Borg beaming aboard and immediately brute-forcing access to analyze and mess with the ship's systems. The crew only found out Picard and a shuttlecraft were missing at all in 'Q Who' when people got curious as to why the captain was running late for a meeting, and the alert about Borg boarders popping in and hacking into the computer was called in by the crew, not by any anti-intruder systems. If the computer can't be bothered to tell anyone that it suddenly lost track of its people with no reasonable way for them to disappear, I'm not convinced it would suddenly become super-competent at raising red flags against hacking attempts skilled enough to know to spoof admin passwords.

@@tba113 You have good points! Unfortunately the writers tend to forget about the side effects of forcing thens for plot points. The real answer to everything you mentioned is 'would the story have been as good if the computer DID react automatically?' There's actually some cases where the computer does react and alert the crew, but again,it's mostly up to the writers deciding how they want things to go in the show. The shuttle being missing, but the computer failing to alert the crew could have been part of Q's manipulations to make it more of a game, and potentially the Borg could have had some kind of stealth tech to avoid the computer detecting their intrusion as easily, but you're right still. Setting the plot points aside it does seem like the computer systems on Starfleet ships have some major shortcomings.

That technique takes a lot of training (hours a day), a lot of innate skill and hand/eye coordination, and luck. No credible agency, military, or trainer teaches it as a primary technique...at most it's a side show novelty.

Even so, basic math indicates that the ship is mostly empty. The amount of volume enclosed within the Enterprise is *enormous* .

But within the universe of the show that burnt cork was meant to represent something structural, something structural that would get blown across the bridge in battle.
