Because we don’t have the solar panels up as of yet, the generator has been amazing. We use the generator to charge our batteries, then the inverter sends regular household power to the house. Generator automatically runs every 3-4 days when the charge controller senses the batteries are low. Most people that have come to our house don’t know we are off grid.

Hey guys. Smart move knowing you need a generator for now and then it will back up your solar power after you get that setup. Off-grid generators are used for backups and emergencies. Now let's talk price. Who the hell could pass that up? That's a great deal and it's probably the only way you would get such a good deal, would be through the military. This is so exciting when things start coming together. This is truly a blessing. Love the videos, thanks for taking me along. This is an awesome find! one thing to be careful with is if you are not running the generator at 50% plus you may have some issues with the engine carboning up. They need to run with a load to clean them out. Some one mentioned it below but a platform so oil changes are made easier. Again, great find and all the best from Alberta.

I electric company gave me 2- 20kw 1 to 3 phase generators. One is diesel and one propane. The diesel has 511 hrs and the other has 287 hrs. They were taken out of service 2 yrs ago but before they did that they chg oil filters, air and fuel filters. I cranked the diesel over yesterday and it purred like a kitten then died for lack of fuel. Yes we do run on to good deals sometimes.

28Kw! You're not going to have enough load for that thing. An unloaded diesel will wet stack possibly allowing unburnt fuel into the sump. Since oil changes are expensive I'd suggest sending a sample to a lab a few times a year to check for fuel in the oil. You'll want to keep on top of that cause diluted oil doesn't lubricate properly and that engine is expensive to rebuild.

@chriswilson7493
@chriswilson7493 7 ай бұрын
Yes, wet stacking is bad and I run a 20kW single phase diesel generator here in the UK that rarely sees more than a 9kW combined load, so I built a Heath Robinson, but electrically safe, load bank from two 9.5kW shower heater element tanks in parallel that I run mains water through and run it for an hour or two every so often to at well over 75 percent load. This gets some proper heat into it and helps negate the time it's running at a low load. It's really a bit too big, but if the neighbour wants to contribute to running costs he could share its output if the excrement hits the fan ;) A good find, I hope it gives you long service, all the best!
@pootispiker2866

Hi Guys, For backup heat for your wood stove you might want to consider a Toyotomi Oil Miser Model 180. Bonus, it vents thru the sidewall no expensive stainless steel triple wall chimney pipe going up thru the roof for thirty feet or more. I put one in my 5 Star home in Fairbanks. It gave me all the hot water I ever needed plus radiant heat in the downstairs slab and in my home made system under the upstairs floor. Toasty toes every morning! My last year in Fbx I spent $5000 on #2 fuel oil for my 1600 F2 duplex in Shannon Park, for the 2600 F2 home $3000 for fuel oil. One of the reasons I retired to Florida! Robert

Just found your channel, if its not too late you should find a gen tech and have that gen set load tested before you take it to Tok. If your computer board, or automatic voltage regulator (avr) is not functioning correctly even if your diesel engine purrs like a kitty your generator may not produce a single amp of usable electricity. Pays to test and service it prior to moving it and expecting it to perform without a gen tech and parts near by. For the price still a great find even if you need to recondition.

I own my own semi truck. You are looking at using 1.3 gallons of diesel every hour. With 500 gallons you'll get maybe 20 days out of those 500 gallons. So you are looking at $2000 to fill that tank? Plus Cummins has expensive parts. You should have gone with a detroit engine. Just saying. Good luck though 👍

I worked in the off shore oilfield as an SCR electrican or generators man for decades. - every platform or rig is off grid - That gen is really cool - I guess you found that gen can drink a bit of fuel - I live in a rural area in the south - hurricanes can knock power out for months or a yr - so even at home ive lived off grid at times - That gen is considered a motive prime mover - the better is a stationary low speed generator - that generator will run 24/7 for 2 possibly 3 yrs at an average load of 25% - also it burns about 1 gallon of fuel per 4000 watts of out put - There are stationary gens that run at 500 RPMs or so - some burn 1 gallon of fuel to 20000;watts out put - some of the Onan inverter gens used in coaches have good fuel to power effficency - and last 30000 hrs - The small gas 2 kw inverter generators at 50% load have a 1 to 7 effficency that's 1 gal of gas to 7000 watts of out put - In the deep south the humidity defuses the suns uv light - so solar panels only generate 20 % of there rated out put for 2 hrs a day if there are no clouds and that's rare - So gens or hybrid work best were humidity is around 60% yr round

@@wildwoodoffgridalaska half my screen on my phone is cracked so I might be repeating my self here - if your machanecal this is good knowledge - this is done on sail boats often - On eBay you can get 3 hp diesel air cooled engines - you can mount a truck or car altanator on it - car altanator and truck alternators have good out puts down to 2500 RPMs - Instead of running the engine at 3600 to 4000 RPMs you can lower it to 2800 RPMs - that gives you 1.5 to 2 hp - a 12 to 24 volt altanator generates 385 watts at 15 or 30 volts per hp input - so that's around 450 watts for a car altinator or ,750 watts for a truck altinators - if you need more power you can go with a larger single cylinder engine ,- You have to use a two belt pulley or a four Inch racing pulley on the altanator - to efficiently transfer the power - also with automotive pulleys the v Grove that accepts the belt is not the same size as the standard 1/2 inch A belt - I just had a machine shop cut the groves in the pulley to accept the standard a A belts - I just use a altanator off a 1989 astro van - you have to mount the Altanator pulley to pulley so the fan turns the right direction - the advantage of setting up as I stated is you can often achieve a 10:1 over all effficency that means 1gallon of fuel to 10000:watts of generated power - delivered to the battery's - When you charge battery's off an AC generator it's in efficient - if the charger demands 1000;watts input the out put at 12 to 24 volts as a result of dropping the voltage on a high efficiency switcher charger is roughly 1000 watts in and 660 watts of charging power out - so even with an efficient charger there was 340 watts lost - If you generate the power at 12 'to 24 volts - you would generate 720 watts to get 660 watts so the loss is 60 watts - that raise your charging system higher than 10:1 - If you look up Balmar marine charging systems they cater toward sail boats - theres is generally high end charging equipment - sail boats are limited to fuel while crossing the oceans - so they go hybrid - My power was knocked out for a yr once and I just used a 3 hp gas engine to drive a car altinator and charge 3 100 amp deep cycle battery's daily - You can look on you tube at set ups also - if you want to control the altinator out put manually get a 100 Ohm 100 watt ohmlite varible resister -most truck and car field voltage is about 4 volts - Also if a car altinator is rated at 100 amps that rating is for one minute - Most can only handle 30 amps continues or 450 watts continues at 12volts! Large truck altinators can handle 50 amps at 12 volts continues or 750 watts

5kw can power way more than you think. If you get a transfer switch that can isolate circuits, you can run everything but the big loads. Dryer, electric water heater, etc. Well pumps and gas appliances would be perfectly fine. You want to be able to run the generator at at least 50% load to keep fuel from glazing the cylinder walls.

What is your run time, how many gallons per hour ? I realize that your demands can change, but what is a good average fore you ?
@wildwoodoffgridalaska

We have tracked fuel consumption accurately. Over the winter the generator ran every 4 days for 10hrs to charge the batteries. We consumed approximately 300 gallons over the 6 months of winter.

A common mistake I see is oversizing diesel generators. You want them to run under heavy loads, and you wouldn't need such a big generator if you utilized batteries to soak up peak loads. You could save a lot of fuel and prevent yourself from having to do a rebuild.

I know that you posted this video 2 years ago I just quickly through the videos between then and now have you ever considered putting up a couple wind turbines for the winter and I've seen other Alaska homesteaders they have solar and wind power the promises if there's a lot of light this summer time and some gentle braces so to speak in a winter time there's very little light but there's a lot of wind so that might be an idea to maintain your battery system off-grid is with the couple wind turbines that idea came to me from a Life below zero on from the national geographic channel.. also don't count out getting a small generator for things you have to do away from the home and away you don't want to run cable up to for power there's a couple companies that make diesel generators ones in Canada that I've seen or you can go with the you know the Honda or the other ones on that line just let let you know when I'm just information I hope it's helpful.. another thought too is if there's a nice flowing stream there in the summertime you can use a water turbine I think some people even have them for the winter time too instead of using your weld water your garden if with that same stream you might be able to put a ram pump on that ram pump up the good elevation.. like I said I hope this is useful to you have a nice day God bless

28kw? That's enough for 2 homes in my locality. In summer when it's 50c outside it will take one of them for my home only if i turn on all the air conditioners (3x 6ton) 72k btu for each floor with an area of 1500sqft.

28KW???? I have never seen a 6 cylinder turbo diesel with an output of only 28KW! How about 80 to 100 KW! Sincerely Richard Goodman
@pootispiker2866
@pootispiker2866 6 ай бұрын
28 kw is actually still too big, probably. You don't want to underload a diesel or you'll have severe oil burning issues in a couple hundred hours.

Tok doesn’t really experience enough wind to justify wind generation. That coupled with the amount of trees surrounding the property, it just doesn’t make sense for us.

Wind generators are unreliable at this point - the wind will comstantly change directions and the prop stops turning - in the oilfield we tried using them on repeater microwave stations along mountain ranges in remote areas - Other than the out put was unreliable there were tons of turbine failures constantly

@@wildwoodoffgridalaska Those generators get run once a month for about and hour or two. They also get load tested, I believe annually. They are meticulously maintained and are kept in nice warm rooms. The only downside is they may not get the best fuel, I work on the tanks that supply the generators and fuel usually ends up going bad because it sits so long. The government has them replaced every so many years and if I remember correctly this one came out because the power demand for the building changed. They only ever get used for testing and power outages like the earthquake of 18. Also a note, make sure you put an anti siphon valve on that above ground tank. You don't to spring a leak and loose all your fuel!
