Naturalist First! Man, at the age of 13? Wow! That was 'super perception absorption reaction'! My first cryings were that to the Duke assortment of songs summer of 1994. Don't know why I was such a late comer! It's a tug of war between- between that of Ripples, and as you had mentioned-your favourite, that being Mad Man Moon! That's astounding! I relate to Ripples more in the sense that I'm up against the tide of animosity, opposition-namely that, yes, a jealous pool! A very and such jealous pool seemingly thwarting my love life continuously and relentlessly! Yes..., her thinking the world of me and I her..., the magic between us came to an end very shortly. First composition of any sort that I sent to her believe it or not was Steve Hackett's Voyage of The Acolyte! That was August /September of 2021. The song that brings me back to the season a little prior to when we first met would be the animated version of Seven Stones! It was autumn! Then Heathaze struck me after sitting at a park pic nic table seeing around me photographing the leaves having changed! That was the day after our fourth time meeting in person. The afternoon when the beauty of magical opportunity bloomed! Being 55 as well..., she was 12 years younger than me. Our relationship only lasted 8 days in person! She gave upon me officially January 21, 2022. The one year Anniversary (...some Anniversary I tell ya.) of our magic is soon approaching three days from now! Evidence of Autumn describes how I feel each and every day. Rarely a day where I don't cry profusely! "And though the pain is dim A something still remains Though you hardly can recall Her face or form Her memory lingers on Ooh she made everything feel right She came in like an angel (in like an angel) Into your lonely life (into your life) And filling your world with light" ...and nobody told me I was 'oh so lucky'. For luck had nothing to do with it.

Was it summer when the river ran dry Or was it just another dam When the evil of a snowflake in June Could still be a source of relief O how I love you, I once cried long ago But I was the one who decided to go To search beyond the final crest Though I'd heard it said just birds could dwell so high So I pretended to have wings for my arms And took off in the air I flew to places which the clouds never see Too close to the deserts of sand Where a thousand mirages, the shepherds of lies Forced me to land and take a disguise I would welcome a horse's kick to send me back If I could find a horse not made of sand If this desert's all there'll ever be Then tell me what becomes of me A fall of rain That must have been another of your dream A dream of mad man moon Hey man I'm the sand man And boy have I news for you They're gonna throw you in goal And you know they can't fail 'Cos sand is thicker than blood But a prison in sand Is a haven in hell For a gaol can give you a goal Goal can find you a role On a muddy pitch in Newcastle Where it rains so much You can't wait for a touch Of sun and sand, sun and sand Within the valley of shadowless death They pray for thunderclouds and rain But to the multitude who stand in the rain Heaven is where the sun shines The grass will be greener till the stems turn to brown And thoughts will fly higher till the earth brings them down Forever caught in desert lands one has to learn To disbelieve the sea If this desert's all there'll ever be Then tell me what becomes of me. A fall of rain That must have been another of your dreams A dream of mad man moon

Phil just nails this vocal performance. Not just the notes, but the way he accents certain sounds in the middle section, his enunciation, and most importantly the emotional heart of the whole thing. It’s all masterfully done. Now take that vocal with those lyrics and put it on top of a piano-driven melody composed by a brilliant writer who’s got something to prove. The way the piano interplays with the keyboard chords, with Steve’s distant, ethereal guitar, with even the layered backing vocals - it’s all terrific. And then, in case you didn’t get the point by the end of the first chorus, an instrumental break featuring an array of tight percussion, reverberating bass, and a piano solo. Not a keyboard solo, mind, but an actual piano solo that then adds in keyboards partway through. The guys never played this live, and maybe that’s because Tony would need four arms to do it justice, because this whole section is just mesmerizing.

Thank you Tony Banks... and ofcourse everyone in Genesis, i have to say that Tony had a hard time playing this, that's one of the reasons why it wasn't done live, the itch of playing this one was satisfied by One for the Vine, a song that's probably the successor of this one and Firth of Fifth because of how they both play with the chords. Still, Mad Man Moon is one of my favorites, i remember reading a review of this album from an Argentinian website and they absolutely disliked this song, and i got Mad Man Moon because of that, but then i was glad because they had the whole album for me to listen to, this was before KZfaq started uploading music in "good quality".

I thought of ELP, too. Mike Rutherford’s part reminded me of Keith Emerson in some places.

@@etiennemaimbourg-jb9mr - Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. Very popular when I was in my teens. Let me see if I can put a link in here to one of my favorites. It shows the full showcase of their sound, as you’ll see if I can find it to put here. The song is “Trilogy,” which is also the title of the Album. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eLOAd6qAxLupdYk.htmlsi=iVSme1xI1wmesqwG

It took me a lot of time to appreciate this album because I am too attached to Genesis with Peter Gabriel, but this song gets me to tears, the music is sublime and the lyrics are so touching... At the "Forever caught in desert lands one has to learn to disbelieve the sea" line I just cannot hold the tears back...

The music was still traditional Genesis at this stage. Even now I find it hard to tell the difference between Peter and Phil. In fact someone actually told Gabriel that they preferred his version of Ripples to Phil Collins version. Peter thouht this was hilarious as he'd never sung the song in his life!

This always reminds me of a tape my brother had done of the TOTT album. The recordist didn't check his sides and put side two on before side one. The album was too long for the side, thus it ended in the middle of this track. Suffice to say i had to wait two years to hear how this song ended, and was glad when i finally did do.

Quite possibly Tony Bank's greatest ever song.....Sung perfectly by Phil Collins under immense pressure with the band massively in debt & written off by the entire music press after Gabriel leaving, Musical perfection.

It’s really hard to pick a favorite song on this incredible album. I’d put it away for 20 years and yesterday was thinking about it. I must’ve been crazy! At the same time it’s like listening with fresh ears. I was 21 when I bought this. That was 1979. Go figure. Loving it as I always did!
