Tony Banks is a lyrical genius. Here he constantly shifts the narrative focus so that sometimes you hear the omniscient narrator, then the narrator talking to the Squonk, then it shifts to the first person for the hunter, who breaks the fourth wall and speaks to the audience about what he's going to do, then it ends back with the omniscient narrator to round up the moral of the story. Brilliant.

Phil wasn't just a great vocalist, he was a brilliant drummer. My favourite drummers of all time are the prog rock drummers. The top 3 for me are Carl Palmer (a biased opinion because ELP are my favourite group of all time), Bill Bruford of Yes and of course Phil Collins. Seen them all more than once and all 3 are amazing.

Like father like son Not flesh nor fish nor bone A red rag hangs from an open mouth Alive at both ends but a little dead in the middle A tumbling and a bumbling he will go All the King's horses and all the King's men Could never put a smile on that face He's a sly one, he's a shy one, wouldn't you be too? Scared to be left all on his own He hasn't a, hasn't a friend to play with the ugly duckling The pressure on, the bubble will burst before our eyes All the while in perfect time His tears are falling on the ground But if you don't stand up, you don't stand a chance ey ey ey yeh-yeh You don't stand a chance Go a little faster now, you might get there in time Mirror mirror on the wall His heart was broken long before he ever came to you Stop your tears from falling The trail they leave is very clear for all to see at night All to see at night They come at night In season, out of season Oh, what's the difference when you don't know the reason In one hand bread, the other a stone The hunter enters the forest All are not huntsmen who blow the huntsman's horn and by the look of this one You've not got much to fear Here I am, I'm very fierce and frightening I come to match my skill to yours Now listen here, listen to me, don't you run away now I am a friend, I'd really like to play with you Making noises my little furry friend would make I'll trick him, then I'll kick him into my sack You better watch out, you better watch out I've got you, I've got you You'll never get away Walking home that night The sack across my back the sound of sobbing on my shoulder When suddenly it stopped I opened up the sack, all that I had A pool of bubbles and tears, just a pool of tears Just a pool of tears All in all you are a very dying race Placing trust upon a cruel world You never had the things you thought you should've had And you'll not get them now And all the while in perfect time Your tears are falling on the ground Songwriters: Anthony Banks / Michael Rutherford Squonk (2007 Remaster) lyrics © Warner Chappell Music, Inc, Concord Music Publishing LLC

HOLY CRAP! I just discovered that the Squonk is a mythical creature from the forests of Pennslyvania! Here is what I learned: Pennsylvania: The Squonk Pennsylvania, known for its rich history and scenic beauty, hides a quirky and melancholic legend - the Squonk. 🐽😢 Yeah, you heard right. This creature is more likely to make you feel sorry for it than scared. The Squonk legend originates from the forests of northern Pennsylvania, particularly around the hemlock forests. Described as an ugly, wrinkled creature with ill-fitting skin covered in warts and blemishes, the Squonk is known for one thing above all - its perpetual sadness. The poor creature is so ashamed of its appearance that it spends most of its time weeping. Imagine stumbling upon this tearful beast while hiking through the woods. It’s more likely to break your heart than make you run in fear. 😢🌲 The Squonk is said to be incredibly elusive, not because it's dangerous, but because it’s always hiding and crying. Hunters who’ve tried to capture it have reported that it’s almost impossible to do so. The Squonk’s unique defense mechanism? It dissolves into a puddle of tears when cornered or frightened. Talk about having a rough life. 🌧🐽💧 The first detailed account of the Squonk comes from a book published in 1910 titled “Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods” by William T. Cox. In it, Cox describes the Squonk’s pitiful existence and the creature’s habit of crying itself into nonexistence when confronted. The story struck a chord, and the Squonk became a part of Pennsylvania’s folklore, a symbol of self-pity and sorrow. 📚📝 Despite its sad nature, the Squonk has found a place in local culture. You can find references to this weepy beast in books, music, and even festivals. The legend of the Squonk serves as a curious reminder that not all mythical creatures are fierce and terrifying. Some are just heartbreakingly sad. 🎶📖 Today, the Squonk remains a beloved and sympathetic figure in Pennsylvania folklore. Hikers and campers in the forests of northern Pennsylvania still share stories of hearing faint sobs among the trees, wondering if they’ve encountered the elusive Squonk. It’s a tale that adds a touch of melancholy and wonder to the natural beauty of the state. 🌲🧭 So, if you ever find yourself wandering the forests of Pennsylvania, listen carefully. You might just hear the soft, mournful cries of the Squonk echoing through the trees. Whether you believe in the legend or not, it’s a story that brings a unique and poignant twist to the rich tapestry of Pennsylvania’s folklore. And remember, sometimes even mythical creatures need a good cry. 🐽😢🌌 See less
