I always thought this song was beautiful but it really hit me in the last ten years the true reality and meaning.

This was probably the song lyric that introduced me to the concept of time passing inexorably, and unavoidable endings. An intensely sad, but true part of life, and a lesson best learned when we're young. Moving words wrapped in superb music.

Every time I hear this song it automatically takes me back to the day when my sister introduced me to Genesis this was the song that she introduced them to me with and I can say it that way because I had never heard the band before. She passed away in 2016, and her favorite song by Genesis was you'll be in my heart and that's what we played her memorial I'm going to have this one played at mine because it makes more sense now than it did before but I still like it and I won't stop liking it. Every time I hear this song I think of her so, there you have it.

~20 years ago, I was driving some friends (several years younger than myself) to Taco Bell for some late-night grub and had old Genesis playing on my car stereo and they asked what that awesome music was. Yeah, I felt old, but I also felt proud to introduce it to others.

My favorite Genesis song and one of my favorites of my entire life

brings back a lot of mummeries, this poster still hangs over my bed, its been there for over 36 years now, only because I loved GENESIS so much and watched there concerts back in LA.

I had almost forgotten just how emotionally powerful some of the music of Genesis from this period was ... and still is. Somewhere on a cassette tape I have a recording of a complete live show broadcast by the BBC one Friday night in 1980, which I treasured for years - it's probably unplayable now, and I've got nothing to play it on, but I regard that performance as Genesis at their peak. I wish it were legally available somewhere, but all I can find are references to bootleg copies.

I can remember first listening to this in 1976, after buying with my first pay cheque. This track still remains my favourite on this album. It has a timeless, dream like atmosphere about time passing..

Brings back so many memories, sad and happy. So true ripples never do come back.

It was a very special time in my life, this music adds to it something that turns it unforgettable.

At the time I thought Genesis' earlier material had merit but was odd. Trick of the Tail was the first immediately.... Wow this is awesome... Album and Ripples the most obvious stand out masterpiece. I still think it's the best introduction to Genesis song, combining everything that there is to love about Genesis in a very accessible package.

At 62 this song and others from that era bring back memories of a simpler time that are hard to explain. But at 62 I don't care if anyone understands...just listen

Genesis was my time at Polytechnic, 1976/79,happy days,loved it when then there were three came out, proved Genesis could carry on.

Does anyone remember Phil playing drums? I saw them at The Lyric Theatre (Good God) in Baltimore where there was no smoking (cigarettes) Oh no! and Phil was brought forward on a sliding ramp to sing and play drums. Amazing time where music was real.
