(Visit: www.uctv.tv/) Understanding whale behavior in the wild is challenging, particularly because these animals spend so much of their time underwater. Join Southwest Fisheries Science Center researcher and Scripps graduate Aimee Lang as she describes how she and her colleagues are using genetic analyses of gray whales to gain valuable insight into their behavior, migratory patterns, and distribution across the Pacific -- information critical for managing the gray whale population in the North Pacific. Series: "Perspectives on Ocean Science" [4/2013] [Science] [Show ID: 24563]

Can the males be readily identified from the females, by the Native peoples who would hunt them, before they kill a given animal? - If so, do they avoid killing any female whales?...as this might help to lessen the impact on a group of whales that is struggling to recover in numbers. Don't Any of the Native peoples feel any obligation to forego their selfish/greedy cultural imperative to kill these animals, in favor of letting their population (whales) recover?!
