RATs were around when i was a air force brat in the 50s, old news

Nothing to see here, this is common equipment on most commercial aircraft.

Curious that this is new technology. McDonnell Douglas had a RAT (Ram Air Turbine) installed on the F-4C which was designed in the 1950’s. Used high pressure air to extend. It created a huge amount of work when it was deployed.

A friend called me and asked about the start cart here. We also have them in GA (General Aviation). But they have nothing to do with "gun powder" LOL. Smaller private jets use a 24 volt system. It needs to be at 24v to use the starter to start an engine. It's common for the system to loose voltage when sitting idle for some time. We then request a ground "start cart" from the FBO. That is a generator mounted on a cart (imagine that) producing 24v that is plugged into the jet. When 1 engine is started it can be unplugged, and the second engine started from the generator of the running engine, or bleed air from the running engine ducted to the second engine. Although the "gunpowder" may be more exciting. LOL 8) Peace --gary

So glad you said "first CONTROLLED flight" and not "invented flight" 😂😂

That’s just a wind mill on a plane. It’s used to power some basic instruments during a total engine/power failure mid air. I am not sure if hydraulics are usable at this point…

RAT provides electric and/or hydraulic power. It does not produce thrust power. In fact it increases drag. In my day a RAT deployment would require an immediate diversion to the nearest suitable airport.

question... on jet airliners.... when did the engines go from under the wing to out in front ????

In my 50 years in commercial aviation, never once saw a "RAT" mounted in a wing. Sully was lucky he was flying an A320, not a Boeing brick.

Me either I think it was the 757 years back that had one and they actually used it. I believe it dropped out of the belly of the aircraft.

The RAT does not keep you in the air if, or when, your engines fail. Gives you instrumentation to know when you will hit the ground from those failed engines. Might give you hydraulic power to keep aircraft control surfaces operating as the aircraft falls to the ground. Notice a common thread? "As you fall to the ground."

Better some form of control...than none. Or maybe you have a parachute?
@WilliamMurphy-uv9pm

@@JusticeAlways If you are really a navy vet, thanks for your service. There is only so far you can glide a commercial airliner without engine power under control or not. Your comment sbout the parachute was supposed to be cute I guess but a pilot riding an aircraft to the ground powered or not would not find it as funny as you apparently did. Flight crews take the safety of their passengers very serious and it is not because there are no parachutes. Some folks cannot deal with serious situations and resort to humor to avoid the serious matter. Guess you would try to keep the rest of the flight crew laughing as the plane plunged to the ground. Not sure what to make of that. Doubt if that would have been any more helpful than your comments here.

👎👎👎👎👎 This is anything but new technology. RAT was developed over 70 years ago and has been commonly used on all commercial airliners since then. Absolutely nothing new under the Sun.
