i don't doubt this guy is a genius and that he can or has already contributed more than most people would in his particular field of work. however the fact that he looks and sounds like this is brutal because the vast majority of people upon first impressions will think he is some kind of mental cripple. when it comes to intelligent, sometimes perceived intelligence is preferable. imagine if he grew up with people recognizing his intellect and abilities, perhaps he would be even more accomplished and contribute even more to society than he has.

I have always found it interesting when folks complain about high IQ societies being exclusionary. Many things in this world are exclusionary that people have no problem with ... but if intelligent people wish to gather and speak among themselves ... heaven forbid! Sometimes you just have to smile and feel grateful - no matter who you are. I frequently think about how auto mechanics are so in tune with the sounds, smells, vibrations, etc. of what they experience with an incredible catalogue of automobiles lodged in detail in their memories. That is WAY beyond me! I'm just not that guy and never will be or even could be. I would never criticize them for getting together and speaking and networking among themselves in groups or at conventions. Simply put, I don't belong there - and that's okay.

@@jefferyford5309 I'm realizing that I may have to join mensa. It has gotten to the point that I do not have anyone to talk to. I read more, think more, and analyze more than everyone around and it is getting pretty lonely.

You're correct. I have partial facial paralysis (due to Moebius Syndrome) and find it difficult to speak as clearly as possible without distracting facial contortions. That's one reason why I prefer to guest on radio/podcast talk shows.

I understand your comment perfectly. Yes, on almost everything. Speaking to people with higher IQs can also sometimes be like talking to a wall since so many of them suffer from cognitive dissonance just like everyone else and have the added feature of so often being right that it's difficult for them when confronted by someone who knows more and thinks clearer.

If you do decide to be tested I wouldn't take much stock in online tests. Perhaps you could speak with your physician and they could recommend an affordable and accurate test for you to be given. Hello again Jeffery Ford, Thank you for taking the time to respond, I imagine that you are a very busy person and it means that much more that you would take the time. Wanting to take the test is not a spurt of the moment thing for me, I have tried a few of the online tests which I don't put too much stock in, I test out consistently in the high 130's but I'm not at all confident in the reliability of "tests" that are obviously designed to be first and foremost for entertainment purposes. It would mean a lot to me and would make me feel good about myself if I could confirm that I have a higher IQ level and it would also explain many of my personality traits and quirks. I just have one question for you, if I may; Does IQ level necessarily equate to educational attainment and a higher degree of financial and professional success? I have read different opinions on this and would like to know the opinion on this. Thanks again and I apologize for my long winded post.

Hi Paul, On average people with high IQs do make more money but MANY don't. Educational attainment is not a sure measure of IQ. Spend time on a university campus speaking with some of the professors and you'll quickly discover that many higher degrees come mostly from memorization, time and money spent. Lots of great, intelligent professors and (sadly) lots of highly educated fools as well.

You're obviously a gifted, highly intelligent person who has tremendous drive for the things you care about the most. Those traits will take you far. I don't really offer advice because I'm not a doctor, psychologist/psychiatrist or even counselor. I will say that you are off to a fine start in life and in not too many years you'll be in the workforce doing the work you love and most likely making a fine living and a terrific life for your efforts. You have my respect and best wishes.

Im in the same boat and i really identify with what you’ve said. I’ve chosen something I love in college, but my adhd is still my greatest struggle. I don’t know what I’m doing either but I know that what we have is a terrible thing to waste if standardized testing is any indication. Do what makes you happy and keeps you interested. I’m studying music and learning more everyday which I love. But I feel that lots of things could make me happy. I could live a lavish life, or live simply. My biggest encouragement is that there are other people like me that are living their life and making it work. It will be okay for us too. Also, take every opportunity that comes your way. Because if I’ve learned anything, it’s that trying something new is never a bad thing, and adventure will always be a better option than staying still. Also were you surprised by your sat scores? I knew I was going to do well in English and writing, but I didn’t know anyone in my class who scored in the 99th percentile like I did. I went to school with all of them my whole life, we got the same education. The gifted programs didn’t do much more for us than regular curriculum.

Its a matter of pride, and selfish ambition.. i would take a back seat, compete only to your own standard, and enjoy school/classes while you can. You can only form your mind to be more rounded, not different. More rounded = stretching past your own cognitive abilities, or whatever other attribute you have, and having a sense of ability beyond your natural capabilities. Being intelligent isnt 'smart' widsom, maturity, a lack of pride, and balance will soon set you up for a fun time in life. Enjoy life while you are still living.

Id like to add to my last encouragement bro.. There is nothing more important in life than developing a rational mind.. you can be super intellegent, but fail to connect your intelligence with real life senerios, and interactions.. Im going to just say it extremely bluntly.. You are trying to excel to achieve intimacy with with others... through beating them, and also trying to attract attention to satisfy yourself.. and may not be capable of seeing that, but its what im sensing from your question.. Which is ok.. but know, the remedy for this situation, in my personal opinion is your whole self. You see, you cant live life on your mind's terms.. humans are complex.. you have to be whole, and balance all aspects of your soul, so they work together EFFECTIVELY, rationally, and in a way that CONNECTS to the world in which you are living in. At the end of your life, who is going to praise you for being intelligent? And, if someone does, did it make you feel good? Maybe... For a minute. But you and i both know that it wasnt worth the effort put forth. Its all about humility.. bro, best advice i can give on your question is humility.. the effect being enjoyment, and utter graditude for anything you are priveledged to be learning. It goes fast bro! A shitty class to you now will be a realization someone worked so hard to hand material over to you, so you can grow as a good human being.. love is a sweet thing. A very very sweet thing, so be grateful, and partake in its essence. Hope that helps.

I really can't honestly say without knowing you and knowing what you'd like to get out of it. Also, different localities have different members which can cause one to have a very different local Mensa experience. I have found my Mensa experience to be quite positive. I appeared full page on the cover of the Mensa World Journal and have been published in it now six times. Plus, there is the Mensa Bulletin which is a national publication for the U.S. that you get with membership.

I fell two short and was implored by the Head of the Pennsylvania Chapter to try again, but I'm satisfied with where I am.

If you are quite young, I might consider developing my own voice first without the contentious nature of some of these groups trying to squelch your views and even spirit. Sadly, things have become far too political and nasty in some groups.

Mensa is the only high-IQ society with enough membership to matter. Other groups might have local meetings in a few areas, but Mensa is the only one with local groups anywhere with a significant population. Even so, outside of the major metro area, the groups are small. You can qualify join for a year, not renew and pick it up later. You will remain qualified thereafter.

It totally depends upon the individual I'm speaking with and how well I can ascertain how best to communicate with them and also whether they are able to listen and hold focus long enough to assimilate the information. I can simplify things fairly well and communication is one of my strong suits. Still, I can't control what others are capable of understanding. That said, I find that most people are capable of understanding at levels far higher than they themselves would believe as long as it is explained in ways that are most easily accessible to them.

I realize this is an old comment but I still wanted to answer from my perspective: I have an IQ of at least 150, as I was tested in elementary school for HAG placement. It may be higher now. I was in HAG from third grade onwards. With that said, I struggled to relate to my classmates far more than the “regular” children encountered in Boy Scouts all through elementary and middle school. Mostly, this was because I grew up in an area where minorities and unorganized households were both undesirable (and I’m a black guy of a single mother). Many of the children got along with me later in life but, at that time, I turned my back on the intelligent and embraced the “normal”. To this day I do this to some extent. Nonetheless, by high school your trope played out well for me. I was a teenage chemist and conducted experiments regularly that would have been illegal without proper licensing for an adult. My mother was originally very obstructive but eventually accommodated the interest. My HS chemistry teacher even got me in contact with a local university’s chemistry department, though their chemistry was rather restrictive for my tastes. I met new people in class and online that shared the interest leading it to draw me closer to the intelligent fringe than ever beforehand. Looking back, it becomes clear that I gravitated to groups where I had a sense of belonging. As a young child those of my intellect shunned me and so I turned to Scouts alone for warmth. As I got older I encountered new smart people that were far less biased against me, and so my intellectual capacity took hold in my social life more. I’d say it primarily depends on where an individual feels accepted. For context I am now 25, own my own chemical manufacturing company, and live independently in east TX. I was raised in western NC.

Life is tricky and many people who are different and absolutely amazing often live their entire life without finding their tribe. I'm glad you found yours. All my best to you!

Hi Jim, There are some incredibly kind, caring, giving individuals in these groups that I'm truly honored to be associated with. That said, I can't truly state that I find them any superior (on average) in that regard than the general populace. There are absolutely great and dreadfully awful folks across the entire IQ spectrum with most people being somewhere in the middle - especially when you observe people in various contexts. Most folks are simply mixed bags.
