I was in Upstate New York a couple of weeks ago, and noticed that apart from that there are a lot of places with Dutch names (or based on Dutch names like Brooklyn is based on the Dutch town of Breukelen), there are also a lot of Dutch flags hanging outside houses and shops. So there are definitely still large numbers of people with Dutch heritage in that area.

William of Orange (16th century) was not the first king of the Netherlands. In fact, the Netherlands was a republic for over two centuries before a distant relative of William of Orange was made king in 1814/1815.

You guys would love the story, of our, and maybe even the world's, baddest admiral ; Michiel de Ruyter. He was leading is so many battles, against all other sea fairing countries in Europe. Also against combined enemies. In his free time, he just went to the Caribbean, to hunt pirates. No biggy. Got caught once, escaped, just walked back to The Netherlands, for southern France. The ingenuity this man showed, was insane. He never gets the respect outside The Netherlands. Next to him, sir Drake is a fisherman.

@Nick: I liked your comment on the Dutch being prepared for the water, and the dikes have certainly been around for several centuries now to keep it at bay (for the most part). I should point out though, that the creation of the Delta Works and the Afsluitdijk were actually a reaction to a horrendous calamity that befell the Netherlands in February of 1953, when a tremendous storm hit the country and caused massive flooding in large parts of Zeeland and South-Holland. Part of the reason of this flooding, also had to do with the bad condition of the Dutch dikes at the time (which since then have been upgraded tremendously and have been kept in much better state of repair than was previously the case).

For everyone who is so astonished by the "Tulip Mania": You all do realize that bulbs can be propagated, don't you? Some people just had the foresight of an industry based on the starter stock of certain tulips and invested their capital for that purpose. In other words, it wasn't about the particular single bulb but rather about the genetic information contained within that carefully selected and high quality bulb. Consider the astronomic prices payed for particular bulls and cows or stallions and mares: It's not about the individual animal but rather about it's offspring, and the same thing goes for vegetal stock. Breeding for desired characteristics lies at the basis of whole agricultural industries, like those of the Netherlands. Investments made in the era of the Tulip Mania sure proved their worth...

We had our natural disaster in 1953 when a flood killed 1835 people and made 70,000 homeless. In reaction to that the government took all those extra steps to secure the whole country. Before that event, we were also protecting against the water , but we were not amazing at it. But now we are much better and indeed world leaders in water management. I think it's written in law that the protection systems have to protect us against once in 1000 year storms.... So when the scientist say that with climate change the chances have changed, the government bodies responsible for the water systems are obligated to increase the defense standards.

Wait.. what? We defeated the USA with Cricket.... we do Cricket in the Netherlands?? And Sir... we beat the USA with baseball on several occasions during the World Baseball Classics (and we beat the Cubans and Japanese as well).... HAH :P There is an "offical Dutch Orange color" which is slightly brighter than her shirt.. but guess what... we don't care... orange is orange. You will see all shades of orange when we "go Dutch" during National holidays and international sporting events :) So... her orange shirt is as Dutch as it gets :) 3:53 and we have a town called Amerika 4:38 Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, which surprisingly is actually not in Amsterdam but Haarlemmermeer (which would translate to Harlem Lake) 6:48 Not entirely true. Most of Giethoorn doesn't have roads but there are certaainly roads in the towncenter where the school and shops are. But I would say that is about 10% of the town. Fun fact about dikes. The story of Hansje Brinker, the Dutch boy that stuck his finger in the dike to prevent flooding is an American story. 8:48 incorrect. The Rhine does NOT end in Rotterdam, it doesn't even makes it to Rotterdam. Shortly after the border it splits into the Nederrijn and the Waal. At the city of Utrecht, the Nederrijn changes into the Lek which turns into the Nieuwe Maas near Rotterdam. What does end in Rotterdam is what we call the Rijndelta (the floodplanes of the Rijn) 10:12 right before the crash of the Tulip market, you could buy a mansion alongside the Amsterdam Canals for a single bulb. You can compare it a bit to the dot com bubble we had in the 1990's. If you follow sports: Shell is a sponsor of Team Penske, the Pitsburg Steelers, they supply the fuel for Delta Airlines and they have gas stations all over the USA www.shell.us/ 11:14 again not true. Yes, the Dutch "invented" the orange carrot, but it had nothing to do with William of Orange. Research has shown the orange carrot was grown long before the House of Orange was a thing. 13:27 Frisian is considered the closest language sibling to English. People that talk Frisian and those that still know Old English can actually understand eachotherquite well.

Boy that guy from Geography now talks fast. Anyway, just to put something straight. In 1953 the dutch province of Zeeland flooded, as there was a high tide and spring tide at the same time and the dikes broke, resulting in a flood (at night) that nobody saw coming and killed 2,551 people. After that, the Dutch decided that something like that was never allowed to happen on their watch again.
