This video has it all. Seriously, all of it. But no math, and no ray tracing. But maybe you just want to understand. Who can blame you?
Just look at the light in that thumbnail bending away from the normal to the surface as it exits the plastic. All of geometric optics with lenses stems from that simple effect.

You can get lasers for just $5 at Walgreens these days. Diffraction gratings are cheap, but you'll have to order them from a science supply store: Diffraction Materials Card ($6) at Wards?

Thank you! I hope to visit the Philippines someday. I would call that light a "ray box" or something like that. It came in an old "blackboard optics" kit that our school has had for decades. Laser ray boxes are easy to find now - I use those in another optics video (lenses, I think). Keep up the hard work!

I wish I did but I don't. I had the opportunity to play around with prisms in physics this year but I think I didn't appreciate them back them as much as I do now. I wish I could redo my first two semesters of physics now that I understand everything better. When am I ever gonna have the opportunity to work with lasers and diffraction gratings and all that cool stuff... It sucks that I didn't enjoy it while it was happening.
