GEORGE CLOONEY WAS THE WORST BATMAN

Out of all the men to ever don the cape and cowl , there stands one at the very bottom of the barrel.
That man?
George Clooney.
George Clooney has to be seen as the very worst Batman ever put to screen.
Playing the part only once in 1997 's Batman and Robin --- once was still clearly one time too many.

Probably been said a million times before, but what makes an actor great isn't their looks or awesomeness, it's the ability to be someone/something they're not. And in this movie, George isn't acting as Bruce/batman, he's just being himself, dressed up as batman...

This all started because idiot parents were freaking out over Penguin spitting up black blood and dying in Batman Returns. WB wanted to get campy to keep their relationships with McDonald's, so they drove Burton away because of this. Camp went up in Batman Forever and they took it to another level in Batman and Robin. Clooney could've been a good Batman if the direction was different. The same can be said for Uma Thurman playing Poison Ivy. She just did what studio wanted, but she was capable of being more menacing than portrayed. Schwarzenegger was horribly miscast, but had his signature one liners. O'Donnell was a fine choice for Robin, but the writers made him a constant complainer. Alicia Silverstone was a big name then and was a very good actor, but she was so bad it wrecked her career. And finally, Schumacher was an underrated director who could've delivered a dark movie, but did what the studio wanted.

You know Clooney might have been the worst batman, but his Bruce Wayne was awesome IMHO. Seriously, I loved the humanity he brought Bruce Wayne. He became like a father figure, and his scenes with Alfred were wonderful. He and Val Kilmer have the opposite problems, Val was great as Batman, but I didn't like him as Bruce Wayne, while Clooney was better at Bruce than he was Batman. Put them together, you would have the perfect on screen Batman/Bruce Wayne.

One of the things I like about Clooney, is that he realizes he didn't do a good job and fully accepts that. He doesn't try to brush it off, or shift the blame, he kinda just owns it and apologies. That said, I do feel there are a few good moments with him, the stuff with Freeze life you say, but I also like some of the stuff in the manor and dealing with Alfred. Just about any time he's not trying to be batman is usually more enjoyable for me. I always say the Forever is trying to be a modern take on the 60's series, and gets it right. BnR is it getting it wrong. Freeze is very much trying to meld 60's Mr. Freeze with BTAS Mr. Freeeze, and I think if it'd been anyone but Arnold, that it might have been one of the most enjoyable characters in the movie. It's not bad, but it's the wrong actor for the role. But I can also see this Bruce/Batman trying to be Adam West Batman rather then Michael Keaton Batman. And in that way, it kinda works. But that's also the problem, this is the 4th movie in a series where it's supposed to be the Same Batman. Keaton to Kilmer are different takes on the same character, but they tried hard to make things feel like they were still the same. Here they didn't even try to bother with the small details. Like you say with Forever, if this had been a stand alone movie, or even marketed as a homage to the 60's series then maybe it could work. But I feel like this is the epitome of studio interfence, with this feeling like they were just trying to please the suits and not tell a good story. While Forever was trying to merge the two, being a slightly campier take but still trying to follow what Burton had set up. BnR just felt too sanitized.

Personally, I only blame the CASTING PEOPLE for having chosen George Clooney for the role of "Batman" in the godawful 1997 feature film. After all, I really believed that Mr. Clooney APOLOGIZED for playing the Caped Crusader many times in the course of several years in various TV talk show interviews. Furthermore, the only person that I truly blame was Akiva Goldsman, the sole screenwriter for "Batman & Robin" because he did such a very poor and even lousy job in making a plot that had turned into somewhat comical. Like the "Batman" TV series from the 1960's in that kind of level. NO OFFENSE to the fans of that memorable and campy TV series anyway. As for Mr. Clooney, I think he at least TRIED in doing some good in the role, but I still believed his public apology as well.

To be fair to George Clooney, it’s not his fault, Joel Schumacher knew he was completely been miscast as Batman. You could’ve gotten a better actor suited for the role after Kilmer’s one-hit wonder as Batman in Forever. But Clooney wasn’t it. And by the way, he was coming off from one of the best medical drama shows of all time, ER, which Clooney didn’t stick with the show for long and he went on to become a successful actor in Hollywood with films like The Peacemaker (with Sandra Bullock) and Ocean’s 11 and 12.

My personal headcannon is Bruce Wayne was away on business and George Clooney broke into the Batcave and started acting like he was in charge and Alfred and Robin just rolled with it. Also yeah Clooney didn't understand Batman at all. When depicted properly I don't immediately think of Batman as the billion dollar playboy. That's just a facade he puts on for apperances. Instead he'd rather use that wealth to stop the mugger or thief lurking in the alleyway so no one experiences the pain he went through.

Batman and Robin was never intended to be a good Batman film. It's only reason for existence was to sell toys to kids and be more family friendly after the backlash from Batman Returns. This in turn limits the script in a lot of ways and doesn't give much room for Batman to expand character wise.

I have a theory on the evolution of the character of batman through the four films and why Georges portrayal is actually quite natural when all is taken into account: Batman : Bruce is clearly insane but crucially doesn't kill anyone... until he makes the connection that Jack Napier murdered his parents, then he goes off the deep end and starts blowing shit up and killing goons right up to killing Joker himself. (dropping Jack was an accident you can see it on Batmans face as he struggles to pull him up) Batman Returns: Bruce is lost and hollow now; hes lost Vicki and is casually killing goons still... up until he sees his faults mirrored in the actions of Catwoman whom he tries to form a partnership with; he tries to convince her to spare Max Shreck to no avail and loses her in the process. Batman Forever: Bruce now no longer kills and once again he sees his mirror in another and tries to guide the newly orphaned Dick Grayson away from vengeance and murder... He kills 2 Face at the end to spare Robin the pain of vengeance but now he has not only managed to gain a crime fighting partner in Robin but he has managed to consolidate both his personas; he no longer HAS to be Batman, he CHOOSES to be Batman. (this is explained soo much better in the novel and deleted scenes) Batman and Robin: With peers around him to relate to and having cleared up the guilt surrounding his parents death he is free to be a bit more light hearted also much more of a father figure to not only Robin but the new addition Batgirl as well... he has kids that look up to him now so his mission is no longer vengeance but justice and compassion, seen when he spares Freezes life and his wife's as well. Batman of the 4 films comes full circle from silent, brooding revenge fuelled creature to caring fatherly compassionate human all because of the people he chooses to let into his life and change him for the better.

Both Mr. Clooney's well developed sense of humor and his ability to laugh at himself are quite well documented. He had a hand in helping Trey Parker and Matt Stone usher South Park into existence,after all. Anyways....word has it that to this very day,he always makes sure to keep some cash on him anywhere he goes. Because if he happens to run into someone who brings up not having cared for his portrayal of Batman or that they dislike Batman & Robin as a film in general,he can pull some cash out of his pocket right there on the spot and reimburse them for the price of a ticket to see a film in the late '90s. And you've just GOTTA respect the guy for rolling with the punches AND finding a humorous response to the situation!

I feel kinda bad for the guy. Personally I don’t really think that any of the problems were Clooney’s fault. He really shouldn’t have to apologize. It was all Schumacher and the Suits fault.

Watching this video after finding out, just yesterday, that George’s Bruce is… … … …SPOILER ALERT 🚨… … … …the post-credits cameo, at the end of _'The Flash'_ (2023), I cannot help but wonder how you feel about said cameo!

Considering hat he WANTED to copy cat the darkness from the previous films. He squeezed in AS MUCH AS HE COULD. 😂 But.... I feel like since they HAD NOT granted him the creative freedom he so desired in his previous installment, I feel like Batman and Robin was Schumacher's MIDDLE FINGER to the studio for not let'n him be HIM. 😂 I mean... COME ON!!! HE BROUGHT US LOST BOYS! 😑 I can respect the fact that he did this movie like that on PURPOSE!

It’s the best response to the hate - embrace it, make it a joke and as a result make yourself likeable. We hate George Clooney’s Batman (batsuit nipples included), we don’t hate George Clooney 😂

The only spark of light in the turd pile that is Batman & Robin is Alfred. It was a mood whiplash to have the genuinely touching scenes of Bruce and him among the Bat-skates, Bat credit cards, rear zippers, Bat suit nipples and ice puns. Michael Gough did a great job as Aflred, even in the worst Batman movie ever.

Nah, George Clooney acted in a Batman movie with the worst SCRIPT. That movie was meant to be campy, just like the 1966 Batman TV series. I'm not going to blame Clooney for portraying Batman the way it was written in the script. If someone has to be blamed, I'd blame the writer and director of "Batman and Robin."
@CoriolanusQuince
@CoriolanusQuince Жыл бұрын
But the TV series had actual dialog, not just people setting up jokes, like, "No beauty..." "...just the beast." You may not like the TV series because it's "old" but much more effort was put into it than Batman and Robin.
@AnansitheSpider8
@AnansitheSpider8 Жыл бұрын
@@CoriolanusQuince Yeah, but the movie "Batman and Robin" and the "Batman" TV series had different writers, so I wouldn't expect the level of writing to be the same in both. To me, that does not change the fact that both the movie and the TV series were meant to be campy.
@CoriolanusQuince
@CoriolanusQuince Жыл бұрын
Fair enough; but that doesn't change that the TV show is much more well written...which is sad considering they gave the guy who wrote "Batman and Robin" an Oscar!

George Clooney would make a great Batman NOW. If he got swole as fuck and actually tried to act, he'd make a good older Bruce Wayne/Batman on like an adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns. I always thought if I was old enough when Batman and Robin came out, and you'd have told me George Clooney would play Batman, I'd have said it was perfect casting.

His was my first batman and why I didn't care much for Batman I mean I didn't dislike the movies (everyone else did but the puns and mcds toys got me) but I saw Clooney as Batman and didn't care much for him and assumed he was an exact representation of the characters of Batman/Bruce Wayne, I was very young back then but now i'm more open to the other representations of the bat the flaws and psychology are welcome, event though I still kind of would want a comedic batman, in this day and age here's enough misery though that kind of batman no longer fits.

Being said that, as you said, he was a good Batman in a bad movie, and it is VERY easy to be "the worst Batman" when no one cares about Batman, as you said. Also, timing was important. I mean, I'm not blaming Mr. Joel Schumacher (R.I.P.) BUT 1 Why payin' tribute to a TV show, 30 YEARS LATER?! Because obviously, both Schumacher's movies were a tribute to the 1966 TV show, and its "campy" atmosphere, but in a modern way 2. Why payin' tribute to a 1960s TV show, after Tim Burton (and Michael Keaton) already set a certain standard for Batman to be dark...and you come back to the 1960s?!
