Stumbled on this clip after watching something from Dennis Waterman, who died at the weekend. I remember watching this interview when it went out live and thought it might be the last time we see him on TV - it was. Both actors were perfectly cast in Minder and remained great friends. George Cole's career spanned many decades and we still watch the classic 1950s film Scrooge every Christmas.

George Coles class and dignity at least gives this interview some joy, he certainly was a superb actor as is Denis Waterman in the perfect casting of Minder, and the scripts to them was heaven sent. Would have been a wonderful idea to have an evening with George and Denis both being each other's interviewer and interviewee. The performances and Minder as a whole snatched a moment in time in England mostly in the 80s. The very fact that Minder is still a joy to watch 40 years on reflects what a treasure it was a remains.

I have a friend who is Russian, who grew up in soviet times. Its always interesting to hear about how that system 'worked' day to day, but one thing that sticks out is that you were just told what your job was going to be, and being unemployed was a crime. Listening to George's story about the man from the board of trade touring the schools and deciding what your job should be makes me wonder about how free us in the free west really were.
