She was nice on the series but she was in a few movies yes she can act but from the actors that worked with her said she was mean and spiteful! Right before she died she phone Andy and apologize for the way she treated him! I not sure if she thought she would be the star of the series but she should have known Andy was! The drama of Hollywood they can have it I like being me!🥺🥺🥺🥺

It’s long been said that Frances Bavier was a very difficult person and didn’t get along with anyone on “The Andy Griffith Show” and “Mayberry R.F.D.” She was a New York stage-trained actress who tended to look down on anyone who she didn’t think was “high-class” or “sophisticated” enough for her tastes.

I knew some people who lived in in Siler City and her neighbors could not stand her. Andy Griffith said that she did not know anything about 'blocking'. He often had to put out a hidden hand to keep her on her 'mark'. A friend of mine once bought her Pontiac that was feared on the show. He said that it was a real lemon!

I’d heard that she never liked Andy all those years and made life a bit difficult for him but did call and apologize to him before she died. But I’d never heard about the thrashing of Goober. She did seem an odd choice for Aunt Bea but filled the role very well. I guess the show was bit too down to earth to suit her maybe. I love that show, still watch it today. To me, Barney was THE star! After he left I was heartbroken. Wasn’t the same. Even Andy took on a different tone when Barney left. Guess he felt he was trying to carry the entire load. But it was the best, wholesome show then and now. ❤

Yes! Barney Fife was the MAIN man, even tho the show was Andy's! He admitted that Don Knotts stole his thunder but was OK with it and they were very good friends in life!

@@johnjones5354 Warren...UGH, that guy was the worst! I found out, not too long ago actually, that Warren was only in about 4 or 5 episodes TOTAL! For some reason, it seemed like he was a regular fixture. To be fair though, I really only ever watch the black and white episodes. I've SEEN the color episodes, as a kid in the 80s (mom recorded them all off TV with VHS), but it's the black and white episodes I revisit over and over again.

It is odd that people cannot make a distinction between what is acting and fictional, and what is reality. There was no Mayberry, there was no Sheriff Taylor , and there was no Aunt Bea. It was all fantasy and play acting which entertained us.. All these actors have their own personalities , values, likes and dislikes. They are just human beings like the rest of us. So let’s get over all this nonsense and disappointment that their onstage character is different from who they are in real life. That’s why it’s called acting!

I didn’t know about the umbrella. I always wondered why her name wasn’t in the beginning credits. I remember Bob Denver insisting Dawn Wells & Russell Johnson be put in the credits for Gilligans island. That was so kind of him. It wouldn’t have been too hard to add Francis’s name. Andy reportedly liked to keep the mood light among the other actors and would joke around. You can see him often stifling a laugh, which was genuine. But that annoyed Frances who felt the filming was serious business.

From reading George Lindseys bio on Wikipedia this man was extremely astute and well educated. With all that he should have had more self responsibility than acting like a 14 year old. True Frances didn't need to hit him like that but could have been more adult and give him a piece of her mind instead.

Vulgarities are rude and in certain points in time would not have been acceptable without a whacking or a boxed ear. And we come to what we have in modern society and wonder why people would love to have experienced Mayberry for real.

I am surprised Frances Bavier stayed in Mayberry during its entire run. She was a classically trained stage actor and even as a kid watching first run for the Andy Griffith Show I always felt like she was a bit snooty towards others. It is not surprising she died a lonely old cat lady inside her North Carolina home.

I met George Lindsey a few times. He was a really good guy. Never spoke bad about Frances Bavier in our conversations. He said that he really loved Hope Summers who played Clara Edwards. He said he would sit in her dressing room and listen to her stories about the business. One person he said he didn't like was Jack Dodson who played Howard Sprague. He said, and I quote " I never cared for him."

It seems that Aunt Bea was very old school, and there are a lot of us who had respect for her generation. Sad story. Ken Berry, was so fun to watch when I was growing up! I think I may have had a little crush on him when I was real little. Kinney Shoes, The most comfortable shoes I have ever worn was from Kinney's. I wish I had some now!! Great video, Dave!!! 👍👍

The pickle episode was one of my favorites. It still resonates today. I was born in 1960. People must understand, morality wise, it was a different age. To swear in front of women was frowned upon, unless she set the precedent first. You combine her age to the equation, and it was beyond disrespectful. He was embarrassed? He should have been ashamed. I’m sure he didn’t swear in front of his mother. That’s just the way it was back then. That said, she still shouldn’t have hit him. Berating him would have been enough.

What I loved about the episode is everything happened because they didn't want to hurt feelings. First it was about Aunt Bea then it was about Clara Edwards. Everything was done to protect people.

Aunt Bee's policy was she needed no help in the kitchen, only Opy, amazing how one person could cook and have the dinner ready to serve, not to mention that's Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, everyday. Plus there always seemed to be Cookies available and homemade pies. Yes, that was the other dimension, it was called Black and White Television.

What I've done in situations like the one Lindsay created was simply to say that I'm offended by that kind of language and please don't use it in my presence. Either that or just walk away if I was free to do so.

I guess aunt Bee was a work of art!! I get the impression she wasn’t very happy working on a tv show like the Andy Griffith show. I bet she felt the show was a little beneath her as an actress. Her unhappiness caused a lot of problems on set. I heard this information from Ron Howard in an interview.

We should not confuse the singer with the song, as the saying goes; and that also applies to actors and their roles. Aunt Bee was a beloved character, but Frances was a neurotic, unhappy, and complicated woman. Being chosen for the role of Aunt Bee was a lucky stroke for her and I don’t believe she fully appreciated it until towards the end of her life. The whole story of her life in Siler City/“Mayberry,” where she moved to apparently expecting to live her life out as the beloved character she portrayed, and ultimately died alone, is pathetic and tragic. As for this particular incident, while George was behaving inappropriately, no one, no matter the work environment, should ever dress down another co-worker in front of other co-workers. She would have been perfectly in her right to speak to him in private, or to simply walk away. Silence is golden and often says much more than words can. Hitting a co-worker would get most people fired. I feel sorry for the way her life ended, and I hope she and the rest of the great performers on this show who have passed on are resting in peace.

I have a great Goober memory from a few years ago. I was feeling a bit down driving to work when I saw a bumper sticker that said "Goober says hey!" You just don't expect to see a sticker like that in trendy SoCal. This was on a long stretch of road with many traffic lights so I tried to work my way up to give a wave to the driver. When I finally stopped next to him at a red light, he signaled me to roll down my window, which I did. He proceeded to ask where to turn off for the fairgrounds. I couldn't remember the name of the road but told him it's several more miles and lights ahead. The light turned green and we proceeded on. I then remembered the street name for the turn and, as luck would have it, I was next to him again a few red lights further on. I signaled to him to roll down his window and gave him the additional info I had just remembered. As we parted, I mentioned the bumper sticker. At first he looked a bit confused and then he smiled and said "Oh, Goober was my Dad." My day got instantly better. The best Aunt Bee episode to me is when she wanted the bed jacket and Andy traded his fishing pole "Old Eagle Eye" to get it. So many life lessons packed into that one episode.

It's amazing how many people you meet who are relatives to famous people. my family knew a female cousin of The Queen Of Soul Aretha Franklin where we live in town in Ohio and knew Sister Sledge, The Staple Singers, and my aunt my father's younger sister live by female singer/songwriter Tracy Chapman's family.

Although I haven't yet seen the actual episode, I have read summaries about Aunt Bee and her bed jacket. I've always wondered, if she wanted it so much, why she didn't just buy the blamed thing herself. The woman wasn't destitute. My late husband was a cousin of the James Dean who created "Pete the Cat." People have asked around the web why Pete is blue in the books, whereas the original Pete--James' pet cat--was black. The answer given, which James has mentioned, is to avoid the unpleasantness that people associate with black cats. James also told me, though, that details on Pete, such as his facial features, show up better in blue than in black.

I saw Ken Berry star as Harold Hill in the Music Man (what this commercial is a riff on). I even got yo meet him afterward and get his autograph. What a great performer and an all-around nice guy he seemed to be. Thanks for the memory!

There used to be a show called "Insight" that was produced by a priest. They would do half hour dramas about modern topics that involved morals. George was on one about an all white neighborhood about to have its first black family. Harvey Korman was in it too. It's probably the only time I saw either in a serious (non comedy) TV show.

Thank you so much for the memories growing up as a child I remember all these child/ family friendly shows from the sixties, from Andy Griffin show, Gomer Pyle , green acres petticoat junction, Beverly hillbillies, Gilligan's inland,bewitched I dream of genie, leave it to beaver, my three sons Dennis the menace three stooges, little rascal lost in space, the Munsters, the Adams family, Dave i know i leaving somethings out its only because I can't remember right now, if you could when you get a chance remind me of some of the classics that I forgotten about because it's been so long, hearing about them need alone seeing them, thanks again for the memories I find them precious, for the people who are still around whom remember these better and friendlier times in the past ❤

Who didn't love the Aunt Bea character? Frances Bavier, the actress was unlike her character it's been reported. Apparently she was a typical Beverly Hills personality, whether that's good or bad, she certainly was an important part of the show. Her performance on her very first appearance was tear jerking and the show wouldn't have been the same without her, quirkiness or not. Thanks for the video here. It's something I'd not yet heard.

Another famous actor who would not put up with “ potty mouth” was Buddy Ebson, as far as I know when there was inappropriate language around him he never whacked anybody or punched them out, but he sure did tell him “hey, get away from me with that!” That is how it should have been handled. In this day and age if that would happen she would go to a real jailhouse for assault battery.

I didn't know she had a problem with George. Ms. Bavier was different, I read she thought the show was beneath her NY theater training, didn't like Andy till he mended fences towards their end. Yet no one was in more episodes, went to the least of the 4 gazillion Mayberry festivals, moved to where the mythical Mayberry would have been and die alone with a buttload of cats.

In IMDB they have her listed in some episodes in season 3 that is why I thought that maybe I forgot and she was in some episodes. I own the show all 3 seasons. So I sat down tonight and watched the very last episode. She wasn't there. I have yet watched all the episodes they have credited her for being in. Why they have her listed I don't know? I am going to watch more of Season Three to see. So maybe you are right sorry.
