I’ve been appreciating his playing and music since I first heard Tooth and Nail (must have been in 5th grade I think?). It’s been a pleasure to have collaborated with him on this one. Back in High School with my very first band we had a school performance (my first one and I was terrified) and Dokken’s “Alone Again” was one of the tunes we played for the entire school. It turned into a great memory!

I had the opportunity to meet George Lynch locally when I was in high school and then again I got to hang out with him and shoot the breeze almost 12 years later. He is a very genuinely nice, intelligent, and humble gentleman. His approach to music theory is very interesting, as in; he claims to not know much music theory but he would fool any of us I'm sure. I would take the opportunity to visit with him again any day and I would also recommend the same for anybody. Talk about a revolutionary mind and genuine influencer on the modern sound and the classic sound that we all love. As an ESP player, i adore this man. As a guitar tech and luthier, he is an idol. There's just so much good to say. As a physiologist, he is a machine regarding his level of fitness to this day. A conversation that I will be saving for the next time I have the opportunity to pick his brain a little bit. Keep on rocking George!

Looks like a great way to hot-mod a JCM without butchering it !. If you have a JCM with an Effects Loop, you can also get similar great results by inserting tube rackmount (or pedal) pre-amp....and maybe you already have one laying around !. My favorite is the Tube Works Blue Tube 905 12AX7 rackmount unit. You have front panel control of the BIAS and CONTOUR of the tube, 3 band EQ, and gain and master volume controls. Your amp will immediately have more tube tone complexity, (and more gain if you want), and can be used to EQ your amp to any frequency profile you like...Diesel, Mesa, Friedman, Fender, Vox. Other great candidates for this "Mod In A Box" include any of the other 1990s Tube Works rackmount and pedal tube preamps like the Tube Driver, RealTube, SmoothTube, and Shred. Of course their predecessor the Chandler Tube Driver is great. Also the rackmount Jackson JX-3 and Peavey Rockmaster. and the Dean Markley Overlord pedal (made by Tube Works). This method avoids the clipping diodes when you add gain into the front end of the amp...and becomes a "Tube Mod In A Box'...you can add gain and EQ...but can clean up the amp from 20 feet away with your guitar volume and pickup selection.

Check him out and support him - never mind GL's shredding - I've just liked his music, composition and constant riffs, he just has it with making music you want to listen to. Lots of shredders I like watching for an hour every 6 months and marvel what they can do but not interested in listening to their music over and over again. GL is my fave and he's still going! I understand the confusion. Yes the core tone is tasty, as Pete said a couple of times, the magic is primarily in the 'articulation' element. You're looking for a healthy compression that compliments the initial pick attack at a low pre amp stage (we're talking between 3 and 4). and that's generally really difficult to achieve on stock 2203's. (To get the stock JCM to sound good Pete used a lot of hi pre amp examples, which is what a lot of people do to try and get good tone, for softer rock it works wel but it really doesn't give the responsive articulation qualities desired for hard rock.

GREAT sounding mod! Lynch, Di Martini and Jake E Lee were the 80's cock rock elite, in the tier JUST below Eddie and Randy and Malmsteen. I guess you can put Vai in there too, but he's not as savage or sleazy as any of those other guys. A bit too nerdy and clean for me. This is all extremely subjective of course! 😁 To people unfamiliar with this part of music history or interest in rock music, those guys would probably all sound pretty much the same.

Its worth mentioning; If your guitar goes muddy when you roll the volume down, its because the volume pot is wired up wrong. If memory serves, the pickups should be across the carbon strip with the wiper connected to the output - that way the impedance across the pickup (which is an inductor and has a charge/release time affected by impedance loading) remains constant which the output to the amp can go from 250k/500k to ground, which the amp will handle fine. Grounding the amp's input is the same as having nothing plugged into it. ;o)

'A little flubby' is what they keep putting on my evaluations at work. I always took that as a compliment now I'm starting to think I might need one to help me with that. Maybe that will pursuade my wife I need one of those. Is this difficult to fit into my Blackstar Fly 3 ?

I had the Hot Mod V2 a few years ago and found it sound too compressed in my ‘82 2203, I personally prefer a decent overdrive in front of the amp.

I always wanted one of these for my Marshall JCM800 4010 combo and my Carvin X-50B with 4x12 cab. Anyway possible to get into some studio type rack stuff, ie. Radial jd7 injector lol. Fantastic review as always!

Pete! How do you always write the best demo jams . You should release all your demos songs on CD.

I had this mod in my SC20H for a time and it was ok, but then I loaded all my favorite guitars with Dirty Fingers+ and was able to get the same amount of balls with the stock amp and a single boost in front.

Idk if it’s just me, but I kinda like the chunky flub of the stock JCM 800. To me that’s always been a part of the JCM800 Marshall metal sound. I really like to blend that boosted with a tube screamer (doing the mark tremonti/MAB setup) blended with channel 2 on a diezel VH4. All this via plugins of course, if I had that money college tuition would be a very different story😂
