The way he talks about visiting the wall with his friend and thinking about the Roman soldier, you can hear his natural story telling ability flowing out, it's amazing. I was really taking in what he was saying and getting into it like a proper story.

@@roas2 This is true. The Romans marched all the way to the Speyside area and had a large battle, the battle of Mons Graupius. They won, but the Emperor died (in Rome or somewhere) and they retreated until the new Emperor's policy was known. Mons Graupius is a mountain, but no one is certain which one. Interestingly, I read that a later historian misread or mis-spelled Graupius as Grampius, which is where the name Grampians comes from.

my dad made a good point about the wall: if its 700 feet tall then why are the mountains behind and around it not towering over it? Wouldn't you be able to see far beyond the wall if you stood high near the peaks of the mountain range to the south west of it? Realistically the mountains would be a lot taller than 700 feet.

Antonine wall is the most northerly wall of the Roman Empire, the Picts (natives of Scotland) kept attacking the wall so they retreated back to Hadrians wall after 8 years (but some also say they retreated because empire antonine died). There is a lot more forts along Antonine wall and evidence of mine pits as they used forts along the wall to fend off the Picts (natives of Scotland), you can visit the forts today and see where the wall is built. Antonine wall in just above the latitude of Glasgow and Edinburgh so a great distance north from Hadrian's wall.
