I always wonder how that fought went down.. Swing for swing. I thought if they were both on horseback Prince Rhaegar had the upper hand as a skilled knight, yet Robert's true love was violence and Prince Rhaegar hated it. But from the descriptions in the books he is about 6'6 and probably 275-300 lbs of muscle, like a defensive lineman; Rhaegar was more sleek and shorter by 3 or 4 inches. Even a one handed war hammer is going to be swung pretty damn hard by a Khalil Mack of the Westerosi variety..

@@Argos-xb8ek I don’t think they ever got off their horses. They fought entirely on horseback IIRC. Rhaeghar did follow Robert into the Trident, and Martin has stated Rhaeghar was more skilled on horseback. I think the implication there is that it was a mistake for Rhaeghar to go into the water, where his superior riding skills would be nullified. The irony of Robert being the one to overthrow the Targaryens is that the Baratheons are only landed nobles at all because they were one of Aegon's early allies in the conquest.
@wesmantooth32 Жыл бұрын
Except that it wasn't really Robert. It was more Ned and Jon Arryn. Ned just didn't have the desire to sit on the throne, so they defaulted to Robert who also has some Targ blood from that ancestral relationship. Even in the midst of a coup they were defaulting to whomever had the closest bloodline to the Targs. Robert lies to himself about doing it for Lyanna, but he really just liked fighting. @JimRFF3 жыл бұрын
Technically, I think he's referring specifically to Cannibal, which is the one dragon in the lore without a canonical demise... Cannibal was a wild dragon that lived on Dragonstone, smaller than Balerion but larger than any other dragon alive during the Dance, it was completely un-tamable and had a possibly fictitious reputation for preferring to eat other younger dragons and eggs above all other food sources (hence the name Cannibal). In Fire & Blood / A World of Ice and Fire, all of the Targaryen dragons are accounted for, except Cannibal, who flies away from Dragonstone and is never seen again. Is it possible that Cannibal flew north of the wall and got iced by the Walkers? Sure, entirely. But it's equally possible that Cannibal ended up flying off to Skagos, the island of cannibals, and has been living there worshiped as a deity by the comparatively primitive locals who offer sacrifices to the dragon. I only bring this up because a known warg with a wild temperment is currently thought to be in hiding on Skagos, and I just really want to see 5-year-old Rickon ride an angry dragon and fuck shit up. Either that, or Rickon's entire story line is a fucking pointless waste of time and will end with a stupid pun or something, making everything about Rickon Stark and his direwolf one giant... Shaggy Dog story.

Robert in his prime could probably have beaten Gregor Clegane. He was strong and trained daily with one of the most effective weapons against knights in plate armor. Also he had pure rage and adrenaline driving him-Rhaegar may have wounded him but Robert probably barely felt the wounds until after it was over. Furthermore Rhaegar had never truly seen war and probably had the overconfidence in prophecy driving him to face Robert alone. Rhaegar stood no chance of prevailing once Robert drew him into this situation.

I wish they could just make a show out of roberts rebellion. it'd tie into game of thrones nicely even if we already know the fate and direction of the show it'd be cool to see everything go down. it'd be a magnificant sight to see robert and ned in there prime fighting wars instead of sitting on thrones and drinking wine

For a few years there GRRM must have had crazy fun having the whole world join in his fantasy creations and take them so seriously. Now that the craze has mostly passed I wonder if he can get back to it, or if it's totally deflated his interest.

@Patrick Höing i prefer for the series to not be finished and to be left ot our imagination rather than to get a shit rushed ennding with no value. maybe he will never finish it. but even so id rather he wont finish it rather than ruin it
@yanivgalmor17473 жыл бұрын
@Patrick Höing thats the thing. They didnt have to make the show in 6 episodes.... hbo offered them 13 seasons with a blank check and grrm said that at least 11 seasons needed to be done to tell the story througly with the material that was already out. D&D rushed the writing since they wanted to switch to star wars and we got a shit ending because of it. So id rather for grrm to take his time and get us quality content then realese it quickly and for it to be a dissapointment. And if he doesnt finish it... than its a shame, but at least it wasnt ruined like the tv show.

If GRRM published an ending tomorrow, it could hardly be considered "rushed" after more than 10 years of writing since publishing DwD.

Man they really should make like a 1 season or 2 season show adapting Robert’s rebellion it would have a young strong Viking like Robert with his warhammer, Ned, Jamie it would be epic seeing young Robert ride into battle and obliterate his enemies, and it’s such a great story as well

I'd love to have a show set during this era, even if it was just one season, just all-out-war, plus we'd get to see more Ned Stark and see Robert Baratheon in his prime. Though who knows, perhaps House of the Dragon, if it gets more seasons, will end during the Rebellion. Could be cool.

Wow never heard his horse opinion before. It's makes Elden Ring make so much more sense. Also it's much more accurate. Most medieval knights fought on horse back. They didn't get off and put themselves at risk of a horseman coming by and nailing them. They wanted to keep their ability to retreat. Plus exhaustion and movement are greatly hampered by the suits and horse backs removes that problem. Smart

There's something I love about Robert, he loved fighting and war and after the rebellion, it was almost inexistent. But he rather killed himself drinking than thousands launching campaigns or fabricating excuses to declare wars. Solid dude

people often discount Robert's power, to put it into perspective, Rhaegar was a seasoned fighter, almost equal to the likes of Arthur Dayne, Barriston Selmy, Gerold HIghtower etc. Robert killed him with one strike, dead before he hit the ground. Robert Baratheon Prime, was easily the best fighter of his time, likes of The Hound, The mountain , Khal Drogo etc. would not have stood a chance.
@shaheenshad5012 Жыл бұрын
Robert's only advantage was the hard long hammer blow, Robert baratheon was a great Warrior but rhaegar was easily the better fighter. In war the best fighter doesn't necessarily always win the battle like Jaimie lannister Arthur dwayne.

Ya people don't realize that about the Targaryens. George didn't just write them like that bc he likes incest(That's why he wrote Jamie and Cersei like that lol). They use blood magic to control the dragons. Bc of that they have to be extremely careful who they intermingle their blood with. If they let their daughters go off and marry into other lines then that family would have the blood rights passed down. Creating a rival dragon family. So they have to be really close to the family like The House of Velaryon, or they need the heirs of mixed unions under their control. Like they do when when 2nd sons marry daughters of other Westerosi lord's. Or like how Viserys I married Emma Arryn. She was all ready a cousin of Viserys and they made sure that bloodline married into the Targaryens and didn't get spread to the starks or Lannisters or passed down through the Arryns. It's a pretty big reason why Targaryen kings will take as many wives as they have sisters.
