I think Sandor is the most relatable character in the book. He is pretty much a nobody, except that he is big, strong, and good at killing. His redemption ark was really very enjoyable to read. He starts out with an apparent lack of morals, but the struggles of protecting the Stark girls slowly chips away at his heart of stone. Rory McCann did such a great job playing Sandor.

I think whats most important about Sandor is that he is very intelligent, despite not being highly educated like most of the lords and their sons. Not in a sence of "professor of quantum-physics" intelligent. But because he was on the "backline" most of the time, he had time to see, evaluate and think. His grumpy demeanor is more of a fasade, to fool the ones that can get rid of him just because they were born into slightly more importand house. He knows when to act, and when to back off. Knows what he can and he cant do. Sure, he has some ideals and you can see it. But he also knows that dying for some ideals is not worth it, if you can wait things out. I wonder how would the political game of the series turn out, if he would be one of the main "players".

@@alexxander9428 They probably meant a nobody compared to most characters the story revolves around. Sandor is not a knight, nor is he the heir to his family's fortunes. He's the second son, so he must seek his fortunes elsewhere. Writing this I realized that the mercenary company "Second Sons" is named that just because of the same reason. They are not the inheritors of wealth, so they take up a life of sellswordsmanship.

This reminds me of my grandfather. He was the only relative who spoke about WWII (we were on the losing side and my grandparents were all damaged in one way or another). He didn't make any side look good and didn't paint himself as a hero nor victim. He didn't care to look good, nor was he bound by an ideology or hatred. He has seen the most terrible things and nearly died on multiple occasions, but visited his former enemy for fun. Meanwhile, I've met people who continued to bear a grudge against their former enemies two generations later. He might have been a psychopath, but compared to the latter people, I think better of him. Seriously, I know someone who nearly had his fingers cut off because of the sins of his ancestors! Personally, I had to see as a kid our car getting deglassed because we had the _wrong_ license plate... That was more than half a century after the frigging war ended!

As bad morally in most world views, having murdered and raped innoceents, helpless and... by the drove just for self gain and more importantly here fun. But then again I guess "most badass" characters in stories ("movies/books") or got are quite bad morally speaking. The Hound for example while not being a pure sadist he has killed and maimed countless for his own benefit. But he has his own kinda code and his capable of love and kindness and has become a real fan favorite really quickly as he formed a (cool or funny,...) relationship with a lot of the main characters (Sansa and Arya Starks, Tyrion,...) and stands out as being someoen true to himself even if the things he does are bad. In a world that is quite realistic where ideals are mostly ideals and idealist often get there throat slit and seem helpless. So yeah you are right and you can be real badass for helping people or doing epic things that don't really harm others or really benefit or save others. But people who are considered badass often have done bad things. :)

The sad thing is that while Sandor sees through the lies of knighthood and chivalry, all it does is make him more cynical, violent and cruel. It makes him depressed, drunk and on some level disgusted with himself, but he never quite takes the step to leave it all behind. (except if you believe the gravedigger theory, which I do) Sansa, Brienne and Dunk, perhaps naievely, believe all or some of those stories but grow into much kinder persons (book Sansa, not that cynical rubbish that the show did with her character), even as they grow to understand how little those ideals are lived up to and how they are used cynically for personal gain.

People complain about how long George is taking to write these books and for a while I was the same and I don’t blame them for how they feel but... With how much depth and story he gives you, about how basically every side C-F tier character in his books have stories that are interesting enough to be whole novels in thier own right, especially after I have been trying to write myself, I more then understand why it’s taken him so long. I mean seriously characters I’d write and forget about as soon as they aren’t serving the story get their own entire sub plots that for most writers, would just be a novel/Novella unto themselves. It’s seriously mind blowing.

Good news friends!!!! He's definitely alive digging graves on the Quiet Isle sept. Re-read the Brienne chapter in A Feast For Crows. He's the huge gravedigger with a limp. His horse, Stranger, is there as well. Brienne and Podrick don't recognize him. I don't think Brienne had ever seen him before in the books. Only heard of him. And good ole Pod isn't very attentive. Quiet Isle is also right next to Saltpans which is where Arya went to to get a ship to Braavos right after abandoning Clegane suffering from his wounds. The Elder Brother tells Brienne that The Hound is dead but he of course means that metaphorically because he isn't The Hound anymore. He is just Sandor Clegane.

The best character of the series for me, bc he doesn't care for changing the world nor does he expect it to change, he sees and accepts humanity for the shit that it is and always will be and doesn't sees himself as an exception, bc he knows what he is, knows that he's no better, and ironically that alone makes him an exception, he doesn't make false expectations, and he doesn't seek power or empty titles, but still he's willing to defend what he believes is still good, even if he doesn't want to.
