I agree, thin material is where one really needs to have a plan.

Yes the secret of braze welding is heat management. When brazing thin to thick, I heat a spot of the thick piece 1/4" away from joint until red hot. Then, while holding bronze in joint, I fan the heat towards the joint. Keeps me from burning up the thin piece everytime.

Why is this considered a braze, is it because you're only liquefying the rod and not work piece.

Sorry if I missed something, but is this brazing without flux?
