Stephen Boyd (4th July 1931 - 2nd June 1977) was an actor from Glengormley, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. He appeared in some 60 films, most notably as Messala in Ben-Hur (1959), a role that earned him the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor - Motion Picture. He received his second Golden Globe Award nomination for Billy Rose's Jumbo (1962).

It's a great pity that Stephen didn't play James Bond. He would have been perfect, blowing all the opposition away.

He was a wonderful a actor. He was brilliant in “ Ben Hur” his scene after the chariot race when he was dying was absolutely electrifying. No one could have done a better job.

The scene in which Messala died, with that long exhale, had to be one of the most well acted deaths in movie history. That alone should have merited Boyd an Oscar nomination.

The Roman Officer's uniform and armour was probably the most striking and best looking in all history.........and Stephen Boyd really carried it off and gave it the 'wow' factor. No else since (not even Russell Crowe in Gladiator) has been able to wear it with such presence!

What a lovely humble man. I felt a bit emotional when he described how the first thing he did after earning decent money, was buy a house for his parents so they could live in comfort for the first time in their lives.

Not only was Stephen Boyd handsome and very talented, but he was a man who stayed true to himself and that is not easy when living in Hollyweird.

Very awesome individual. Not greedy wanting Fame. A very humble individual. It is rare to see a man or a person like that in Hollywood. You got to love his loyalty to his wife 💖 she was amazing woman. What a great team. Sorry to see them leave so soon. I'm going to look up some of his western movies . Stephen Boyd was great with Charlton Heston in Ben Hur.

To think that this man would almost have played James Bond, and that Sir Sean was practically second fiddle to him...He would perhaps even have been a greater Bond than Connery.

Seemed like a great person. Shocking how many actors of that generation died so young compared with todays standards. I suspect smoking had a lot to do w it.

It's 2023 , this past Easter Sunday I rented on you tube ' BEN HUR ' ! Since I was young , along with my family it would be Ben Hur , the Ten Commandments and the Robe ! Steven Boyd was magnetic , he held his own with the great Charlton Heston . Rest in peace . ❤️

I honestly don't know who else could've acted Messala. Stephen was more than perfect for this role. I'm always in awe at how casting directors always seem to cast the right choice(s). Bravo!
