I like the spiky plant suggestion, that's a really good idea and one I'll definitely be using when I eventually get my own cat 😊

Thank you ! I stole the idea from a shopping plaza that uses something called pigeon spikes to keep birds off their store signs. Mine is slightly less extreme, but works effectively, without causing injury to the cats.

Thanks for this great video; as this topic hasn't been discussed enough on KZfaq. I personally don't have additional pets, but it is always good to learn and also try to avoid external hazzards such as birds. It is interesting what you mention about the fake plants. I thought they were only meant as decorations, but there is a smart stratagy behind

Hey, thank you for rescuing the gerbil. I'll need more information ; how old is the gerbil, how long have you had him for, what type of environment, how are you picking them up ? I will be making a video on how to work with your gerbils soon, but for now I offer you the following advice : Don't force your gerbil to interact with you. They're small, so it can be easy for us to scoop them up without thinking, and if you aren't paying attention you can damage the trust building process. Start by offering seeds. Place them all over your hand and arm, and keep it flat in the tank. The gerbil will try to get the seeds, and let them. Don't scoop him up, just let him learn that your hand = food and food = good, so your hand =good. Don't make sudden movements, this can spooked them more.

Do you find it hard to sleep with them in your room? I have been having trouble sleeping lately with the noise and am trying to find solutions as it's the only place I can now place the tank. I can't use earplugs because they hurt my ears.
@TheGerbilVine

What part is keeping you up? The wheel, the chewing on cardboard, the digging? You could always remove the wheel and cardboard at night but as for digging I don't have a solution. Moving the tank would be your best option, but I know you mentioned you cannot put it anywhere else. No, I don't find it hard to sleep. Sometimes falling asleep is hard, but I just wait until they settle down. They never wake me up when I'm asleep though

@@TheGerbilVine thanks so much for replying! 😊 I find it's the digging, and lately have removed the wheel and cardboard though feel bad about it. I find they sleep most of the day and are awake nearly all night which confuses me haha. They are only in a 20 gallon and I've been trying to find an affordable 40-60 gallon which might help with their digging on the cage walls.

@@s.d774 You may have better luck upgrading their tank, but also your gerbils just may tend to be more active at night. What you could do is maybe attempt to keep them up and about a little bit during the day, liike taking them for out of tank time if that's something they're into, or feeding them treats, or just messing around in their tank so they come out and hang out for a little bit. Similar to like a toddler when you want them to go to bed at night, you try to keep them up as long as possible during the day.

@@TheGerbilVine Oh, ok, thanks! I didn't know I could wake them up, because everyone always says don't wake a sleeping hamster, I figured with gerbils it was similar. I definitely thought about doing so, and I might have to! I have a 4 year old and he would like to see them in their tank and feed them some treats during the day, and so far he's barely seen them! 😊 Just want to add I love listening to your videos and think you have great and informative content! I've learned a lot so far. Also, I'm in Ontario too!

@@s.d774 As long as you are not going into their burrows and physically removing them from their sleeping spots, I think it's definitely OK to mess around in their tank. I clean my Topper daily, and often it ends up waking them up and they come out and hang out for a bit which I think is awesome. Thank you for your kind words and that's really awesome that you're also in Ontario :) it makes me happy thatI have a lot of locals as well as International viewers. Best of luck to you and your little one interacting with your gerbils :)
