Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking at getting for my gerbils for some out of cage fun. I've been putting them on my son's bed with a sheet to hide/dig under and they've had a lot of fun, but I think they are getting bored. One of them has become exceptional at jumping off the bed now. She'll also jump on my shoulders when I'm sitting on the floor next to the bed and try to climb down my back. :/

I like this playpen very much. It is spacious and allows visibility. The gerbils are having a blast :D If you didn't get them to climb your body while you are with them, it will be possibly in time, the more they get out and are used to the experience. Next time you may want to offer them food they enjoy (such sunflowers) to encourage them to jump on your body or climb to your shoulders, and as a reward for good attitude.

I been looking for someone who dose gerbil stuff, once I found you I was so happy. I have one question, how and where did you get the tank topper or did you build it?
@TheGerbilVine
@TheGerbilVine 2 жыл бұрын
It's a combination of both. I bought the hamster cage and then built the frame around it and attached it. I have a video on my channel called building my topper where I discuss it in detail. Also thank you so much.

New subscriber here! Love your videos. Im not generally one for seeking help in a comments section, yet here I am. Haha. I dont want to flood your comments section, so Ill try to be succinct. So we recently adopted our single gerbil, Goose. We are a hamster family. And we are dedicated to doing the absolute best for our little friends and we take species appropriate care very seriously. That being said, while at our local chain store for entirely unrelated purchases we overheard two customers talking about buying a steeply discounted gerbil to feed to their snake because it was "an excellent deal." We are never ones for spur of the moment purchases on lives, however we had already planned on adding gerbils to the family and I couldnt stand the idea of her being dinner. She currently has a fantastic gerbil "manor" all to herself. The reason she was discounted (to $3) was because she had had issues with the other two gerbils she had been kept with. One gerbil in particular picked on her and the other gerbil constantly. They removed the aggressor and the other gerbil picked up picking on Goose. We were instructed by the "specialist" to keep her alone. Gerbils, as we know, are social though. We have an acquaintance who is looking to rehome their bonded pair (all females). And honestly I am seeking advice where I can from knowledgeable folks as to if I should keep her as a single or if we should try to find her a friend/s. We worry that bringing in a bonded pair might cause more issues, and finding a fellow single gerbil has proven complicated. Apologies again for coming at ya in the comments. Iv watched many of your videos and I respect your approach to the quality care and happiness of these darling little lives.

I can't stand people who look at small pets as food . people that care about their snakes give them food from common feeder animals; which gerbils are not Breaks my heart to hear that, I possibly would have taken her home too. As for temperament, that is something you will have to decide. Ideally, she should be quarantined for 2 weeks just to make sure that she isn't sick or have any illness from the pet store before you try to introduce her to another gerbil, if you do decide to. Pet stores often aren't ideal situations or living arrangements for gerbils, so their behavior could be better in a bigger, enriching home. How old is she ? Is she your 1st gerbil? I know you mentioned you are a hamster family. On average gerbils can live at least 3 years, which would be a long time to be alone . Personally I would get her a friend and try to do a split tank introduction after the 2 weeks, but I can understand that it's not something that a new owner may be comfortable with. Females can be trickier to bond because they are constantly going into heat, which presents a challenge An ideal ratio is 1:1 introduction A 2:1 ratio presents an opportunity for bullying as two gerbils will bond more leaving one out.

Aww they look so happy🥰 quick question, if I have a small room without anything they can harm themselves on is it ok to free roam them in my room if it’s carpeted? It’s a very thin carpet but I’m just wondering if I should be worried about them getting their paws caught in the carpet. Anyways awesome video as usual 😊 and I love that you got a pet camera installed in their cage. Can’t wait for your new videos!

I have had my older gerbil and 2 baby/teen gerbils in this playpen without issue, so I recommend it highly. Just done place objects that give them height close to the edge, or they will try to jump out.

I tried free roaming my gerbils and they just freaked out. They ran around like maniacs and scratched at the walls of the playpen and overall seemed stressed. What am I supposed to do? I feel bad stressing them out but I would also feel bad not having them leave their burrows or enclosure their entire life
@TheGerbilVine
@TheGerbilVine 2 жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry that the 1st time seems stressful. If it's a new experience for them it can take them some time to adjust to it. I'd recommend taking them out more often for smaller bursts, like for 5 to 10 minutes at a time And then when they're more comfortable you can gradually increase that time up to 20 minutes or half an hour

@@TheGerbilVine I tried free roaming them today. It sort of worked until they escaped and were running around in my room which scared the life out of me. I decided going in, and since they were in cardboard boxes which were torn up like a video from Victoria raechel, (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i6yRm7xn2d6al4k.html my big fat butt moved the box and they escaped. Not using a cardboard box ever again from now on 😭 gonna get a real playpen soon I think

A very nice enclosure for freewheeling! I would give the little mice the opportunity to climb in and out of their cage on their own. After all, they can't know that they're coming back, so they're definitely insecure. I wouldn't feed anything there because of the risk of unwanted territory formation / declaning, only provide water. I have two gerbils, one likes to Play outside, one prefers to stay inside - and I do not force him to go outside.
