The Germanic languages are a branch of the Indo-European language family spoken natively by a population of about 515 million people mainly in Europe, North America, Oceania, and Southern Africa. The most widely spoken Germanic language, English, is also the world's most widely spoken language with an estimated 2 billion speakers. All Germanic languages are derived from Proto-Germanic, spoken in Iron Age Scandinavia.
Scholars often divide the Germanic languages into three groups:
West Germanic, including English, German, and Dutch;
North Germanic, including Danish, Swedish, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Faroese;
and East Germanic, now extinct, comprising only Gothic and the languages of the Vandals, Burgundians, and a few other tribes.
If you are interested to see your native language/dialect be featured here.
Submit your recordings to otipeps24@gmail.com.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

thank you for including Elfdalian!! It's very unfortunate and sad that the swedish government considered it "just another" dialect of Swedish, which is not the case at all. They have many differences and although it has much Swedish influence, just looking at paragraphs in Elfdalian compared to Swedish, you will see the differences. The Swedish government doesn't care for it either and many Swedes don't know about the language itself, so thank you for including it!!

I don't know how they can say it's a dialect, when I've been to älvdalen to visit my friend's summer house and I happen to meet someone who speaks elfdalian I have to ask them to switch to Swedish because I can't understand what they're saying. Some remote dialects can be very hard to understand but not impossible.

The flag used on Finland Swedish is misleading as it refers province of Ostrobothnia alone. Finland Swedes use similar flag to Scania, with proportions of Finnish flag.

Yes. At least the speaker actually was Ostrobothnian. It'd have been even worse if the speaker was from southern Finland, as the flag referred to Ostrobothnia

Something about the germanic languages reminds of greek. For example the "th" sounds, the word for no or not "oxi" for greek and "ikke" for the north germanic languages. Another alikeness i find between the germanic word for "all" and the greek "όλα". And the english negating "don't", which sounds very much like the greek "δεν".

There are three I think. One Germanic Silesian, which belongs to the Central German group and two Slavic ones. The older of the two is considered a unique Slavic language if I remember correctly and is basically extinct today and the newer one got brought there after WW2 by the new Polish settlers.

@ig1948
@ig1948 Жыл бұрын
@@Leo-uu8du French maybe not, but Italian is one of the most fluid and smooth languages, every or almost every word ends in a vowel, after every consonant there is a vowel. German and these northern langauges end in consonants, also German has these weird pauses at times that make it sound so unnatural. Then there’s Danish which is just a bunch of chocking sounds, Swedish is kinda the same, Dutch sounds like a weird mix of German and English. But this is my just my opinion, if you like them that’s cool.

I'm sorry to have to deny you, but the English language, despite having Germanic elements, cannot be considered a Germanic language. The reason is simple: the words in the English language of today, which allow communication and understanding of subjective issues or the understanding of subtle and profound issues, come directly from Latin. Notably words that end in "ON", for example, "innovation" "sensation" "expectation" and millions of others! We can say that English people speak Latin, with the help of other words from some Germanic dialect! Even in this answer text I wrote, there is a surprising amount of words that came straight from Latin. You can search!

The grammar is unmistakeably Germanic, so it is a Germanic language. Vocabulary is insignificant when identifying the ancestry & familial relations of languages.

Of the 107 words you used, 72 are Germanic. That's a little over 67%. Be that as it may, the words we use in our everyday speech are overwhelmingly Germanic. It's unlikely that you "spied a pale canine" but rather that you "saw a white dog"
@hanskotto8630
@hanskotto8630 Жыл бұрын
It’s descended from proto Germanic that’s why we call it Germanic. English could have entirely replaced its vacant with French words but that doesn’t matter when defining familiar relationship between languages

Very fun video, thanks :3 Do have to say a couple things about Gothic and Crimean Gothic though. “Godana dag! Namo mein ist Andi.” Would probably have the ist last after andi but that’s a minor thing, in general gothic word order is pretty free. Also in general Hails! Seems like a more common way to say “hello” For pronounciation there are a couple more things so I’ll just give ipa for how it’s probably a little more accurate: ['goː.ða.na dax 'na.moː miːn 'an.dɪ ɪst] [ɛːns twɛː θriːs 'ɸɪð.woːr ɸɪmɸ sɛhs 'sɪ.βʊn 'ah.tɔː niʊ̯n 'tɛ.hʊn] for the most part great! :3 As for Crimean gothic: you seem to take Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecqs account at face value, which really isn’t the right path to take here I think … he wrote the gothic words In his account in a very unreliable and inconsistent orthography firstly and secondly the words are filtered through you could say, an informant who in Busbequs words knows Greek better than his own language (Crimean gothic). Some words are more clearly coloured by his Greek like “tria” or the diphthongal realisation of the vowel in “seis” others maybe in a more indirect way. And reading “athe” as aþe is just from all the evidence I could gather wrong. Busbequ wrote the voiceless dental fricative as in his account as far as we can guess and simply represents t~d. If you’d like to talk about this further You can just message me privately :3 (I think that’s a thing you can do on KZfaq right? 😅) Disclaimer at the end: I’m not an expert by any means merely an enthusiast and in kinda knee deep in Crimean gothic research rn haha so everything I said with a grain of salt. Anyway.. great video, thanks and looking forward to more! :3
