My grandfather fought in the SS. Latvian Legion, 15th division. I can remember he spoke highly of other Divisions saying that they had an almost superhero-like mystique in the press. I have two of his magazines he kept from during the war. The magazine is called Laikmets and one issue mentions the nords early successes

Interesting! Did he talk about their physical training and their beliefs and values? The SS was a noble cause to fight communism, save Europe and to be honorable.

@@PassionateSpirit88 He didn’t talk in extensive detail about their training beyond simple summaries like “Learning to crawl like a snake, get the rifle ready blindfolded if you have to”. In his diary he wrote only of their shenanigans in the barracks - pranking eachother, stealing apples from the trees and young boy stuff like that. In terms of their oath and motivations - he believed for the rest of his life until his death that they were engaged in a holy struggle against the Soviets (in his words he referred to them as Chekists or Red Terror) When he finally returned to a free Latvia in 1997 he referred to it as the victory they’d be waiting for, that the goal always was to outlast or outlive the Soviets until they fell and were forced out of Latvia forever. He also spoke of “going awol” on their final orders, which was to go to Berlin and essentially die. The leader of his battle group, Villus Janums instead orchestrated a deal with the allies to surrender in Guttegluck Germany to sore themselves a needless death as the struggle for Latvia was over at that point. The major engagement he took part in was the Battle Of Jelgava where he was injured by shrapnel in the hand and legs and carried some in his body for the rest of his life. There is great info about this battle on the Latvian Wikipedia and there is an old Reuters article covering it from the era. Here is a link to the scans from his diary in which you can see a hand written Morse code chart as well as a feldpost eagle stamp drive.google.com/drive/folders/1-2srczFWAdkS-kOw0vZ_gzvAsKbqQfzI This is my post prized possession as first hand accounts of the Latvian SS are sparse and when I am an older man and can’t look after his diary I plan on donating it to the Latvian War Museum so it can forever rest in his homeland After the war and time in Zedelgem POW camp and as a displaced person, he was granted a new life in America and started a successful masonry company which built some neat landmarks in my state. At the time of his death, over 100 of his employees and their friends came to his funeral and got to see a detailed poster board presentation on his time in the war and their struggle to try and rid Latvia of communism.

My grandfather was a volunteer in the Flemish SS Langemarck division. Saw action at Leningrad in 43, was wounded and returned in july 44 for the battle of Narva. He was a troubled man but always had that twinkle in his eye when he talked about the good old days. Once he told me how he got into a boxing sparring match with the instructor at the training camp (don't remember how that came about). He ended up bruised and battered but was able to knockdown his opponent. At the end of the day everyone gathered in the canteen to get absolutely wasted on beer and schnapps. I think he was 17 years old when he enlisted.

He fought in Germany following the rules from war in Russia. Many POWs shot (Russians, Low Country, Belgian) that worked for local farmers. So there are two sides of a shining coin.

Nicolussi-Leck cannot be considered an Italian at all for three good reasons: A) First of all he was of mixed Italian-Germanic origin as his surname indicates. B) Most importantly, he felt and considered himself German/Austrian as he fought the Italian fascist regime which, in 1919, annexed South Tyrol (an ancient part of Austria, ethnically German 100%) C) When the war came, although theoretically an Italian citizen, he joined the Waffen-SS as a "Volkdeutsche" (An ethnic German born in a foreign country). Therefore, to call him an Italian is a mistake if not a misrepresentation.

Leck is not a italian name i have visited that area in 1992 and if you go outside the cities the population is decidebly Germanic bc that area was Austria until 1919 and was taken by Italy as,war gaun from ww1.

Maybe the narrator should do a read through first. To stop this sloppy sounding narrative. It’s a shame as these are really interesting podcasts.

What the f**k? What's with the dialogue when narrating the battle? "The heart of a lion" "Move like phantoms of death moving with surgical precision" "like an unyeilding tide" "steely beasts of destruction" and so on and so on! C'mon dude it's way over the top just talk about it properly without the bullshit.
