I love this! I specifically chose this prelude as the opening music at my wedding - the introductory arpeggio soaring ecstatically ever upwards to that triumphant arrival! It made for the most spectacular entrance a bride could have. Thank you Gerubach!

schoen dadurchgehetzt… und schoen alles abgesetzt. Mag ich nicht.Wieso eine g-Dur Tonleiter nach unten mit abgesetzten Noten spielen? Much too fast, this tempo makes that work ridiculous.

No, Jean Zahlen, this isn’t too fast, and here is the explanation. J. S. Bach composed BWV 541 for one of his sons seeking an organist position. When auditioning, you have to impress, and you impress by playing the music quickly. In the fugue we also see a fermate before the end. It’s playing incorrectly, even here. With such fermates, the organist was supposed to improvise, it gave the musician opportunities to show what he was able to play with his fingers and feet. So no, he doesn’t play too fast.
