Great video, I love the cinematography that you are incorporating these days! Totally agree with the message. In my most recent video about how I got my first data science internship, I talk about the types of projects I did that set me up for success. I also think tying your projects to the specific industries or companies that you are applying to can set you apart from the crowd. Would love your thoughts on the matter!

Agree. Newcomers, however, might not have a particular industry in mind, which is why I suggest personal interests. If you are targeting certain sectors then definitely tailor your projects accordingly. Thanks for your comment!

In strategic marketing there is a model RDB. Commonly it used as a brand benchmark, but I use it to sell myself. It simply consist of 3 questions: Resonance: Why do you need me? What can I do? Differentiation: Why I am better, then others? What unique skills do I have? It can be GIS analysis, biology or other stuff. In data science it calls as specialization. Believe: Why I can trust all you speak about yourself? Proof it! So, key message - job is not based on your experience( but not at all), but on your expertise and how valuable you are. Thanks for what you`re doing, Python Programmer. It really helpful (but I cant donate now, cause I am a poor bitch from the europenian asshole. But one day I`ll do.)

@pragun1993

I agree with what you said. But this advice although very practical is hard to implement for someone who is new to Data science. When you have so many learnings (python, statistics, ML algos) going on in this vast field of Data science, it is difficult to work on projects and blog at the same time. Since, you are new to this learning at that time with no experience in hand, you'll never see the larger picture and always ponder on what kind of project and what would you do on it. Working on a project and blogging about it requires a lot of planning and thought which could be intimidating for fresher like me.

I have totally no experience doing any data science projects. I thought doing coursework that is coequal to the ones that get data science jobs that I'd get in. The rationale as to why someone would hire someone with a portfolio sunk in because of this video. I might have to alter my personal curriculum by getting into github and joining some kaggle competitions even if I fail miserably.

There is a great scene in "Entourage" where Turtle and Ari are discussing a new business that Turtle wants to start. After some back and forth, Turtle says to Ari, "I can pull this off Ari". Ari replies, "Come back when you can prove it". I love this line as it's a way to remind people that telling employers that you are good enough isn't enough any more. Too many applicants these days. PROVE you can do what you say you can do. Let me see your portfolio and let me see your thought process.

Hi jiles! I follow your videos, and I like it so much! But I have a question: I’m currently doing the python specialization on coursera, I’ve just completed the 3rd course on machine learning and now I’m facing the 4th on text mining. So I learned the python basis, pandas to clean data, Matplotlib to visualize data, and I’ve been introducted to machine learning. I have studied the basics of sql too, So, do you think that by the end of the specialization, I will be ready to try to apply for a job? Someone ask other competences concerned on spark and hadoop (I don’t understand what those software really do) and tableau or other tools for data visualization. Please clarify my ideas because I don’t know what should I learn! Thank you!!
