I started learning Python almost 2 months ago, Feb 2021. I am 72 years old, 73 in April. My goal is freelance programming. I do have 20 years ago history as a hardware person, so it probably helps a little. My daughter who is 46 years old started to learn to program 2 1/2 years ago. She has been at a full time programming job for a year now, works from home, has 2 children and a husband. Bottom line... you can do whatever you "want" to do... Good Luck!

At the age of 33, I quit my dead-end job, went back to university and did my masters in applied computers. Now I'm 36 and super happy with my new job(as a web-developer) and workplace since the past one year. Yes, I got this job when I was 35 (which might be too old by some definitions).

Same here, I'm 35 with 2 kids working full time and going to school. I think another piece to consider is the cost. I wouldn't recommend going into a lot of debt. If you can, pay it as you go or see if you can get a grant or scholarship. I think there are some scholarships aimed for adults getting their first degree. A degree from a local college is going to look just as good as one from an expensive one. There are a lot of other things to consider like the time it takes from your work. But if I can do it, then you can too. I think my work has only benefitted from the education I'm getting.

I quit my job 2 years ago working in a crappy accounting and finance role and started doing a degree in data science. I have Zero knowledge and I had to learn R which was twice as hard as Python, over the year it changed my thinking abilities and to be comfortable to be uncomfortable in data science. Because this is what it will be there is no right or wrong way its the unknown and I do not know, certainty is the hinderance and the Impostor Syndrome that will be there eating you as you learn. But the remedy is that there is no cure for impostor syndrome its more about taking a step and say I have done something a bit better than yesterday is more than enough. Even billionaires in tech industry are suffering the impostor syndrome so you are not alone. I started to change my career in my late 30's, my colleagues in my data science degree are in their mid and late 40's and I have people in 50's and someone who is 63 years old doing data science now...No joke!

Age may be a factor but have in mind that with age you also have some advantages. And that's the point: focus on what you are good, not at your weakness. I'm in the same boat. Currently 53, unemployed and former employer and employee in the IT business with engineering degree background with some statistics too. So I chose to study this area of data analysis, since it seens promising (not sure if it is truth in my country). Although there are lots of new stuff, A lot of it is related to techniques I'm trying to remember from college 20 years ago. Just with more powerful tools :). This channel is a good step to learn the basics. Thanks for your good work!

I came across your KZfaq videos today trying to find more diverse opinions on learning programming and data science generally, and I was really taken aback by what you said at 3:49 , exactly how I’ve felt every time I’ve pursued more technical work than what I am used to. I am a nurse by background but for the last two years I have led the implementation for the first web and mobile-based patient platform app at an NHS trust doing the analysis and build primarily, but also the project management side. Despite all this I still feel like I fail every time I try to branch out into learning programming and software that is industry standard because I don’t feel like I will be good enough. Be it age or experience, I always think there will be something missing if I went for a job because I haven’t been coding since I was a teenager. I really appreciated hearing this and it’s given me the motivation I needed.

Great video and I like all the positivity! It is nice to hear everyone's story's in these comment's. I am another person here who started studying at University in my 30s. I dropped out of high-school and became a mechanic. Then at 28 years old I decided to get my GED and from there I decided to give Uni a try. I was nervous at first and took a few different course my first semester. I found I truly enjoyed math and really liked programming. Believe me when I say I was really surprise how much I enjoy these topics. Now I am entering my third year of studies in a bachelors of Math. There is no age on learning! So keep believing in yourself and kept driving forward. Then let yourself be surprised by all that you can accomplish! Cheers from Canada.

Your steering wheel is on the wrong side brother! All jokes aside, Buddhism describes 5 hindrances that get in the way of accomplishing tasks which are not urgent but important. Those 5 hindrances are desire (things that distract you from task at hand), ill will (aversion to difficulties you face while executing your tasks), slot and torpor (lack of motivation), restlessness (anxiety), and doubt. These five hindrances almost always interfere in combination one's ability to work towards long term wise goals. The person asking the question clearly is hindered by the last two. The restlessness (anxiety) is overcome by developing a sense of contentment in the good path of learning this interesting stuff you have chosen for yourself. The doubt is overcome by having a clear map and this will require following people like the one on this channel and also you can connect with folks like Lex Friedman on Twitter. Stay blessed!

You are right, its never too late to learn coding. But to get a job as a professional developer is a different thing. I can tell you for a fact that there are not many developers over 40 years old. That how i see it in the corporates anyway. There are outliers at 50-55, and they tend to be very good at it. People tend to hire people like them. So it follows that if you look over 40 you will start finding it hard to get hired, unless you are exceptionally good. To get a junior role at age 40+, i've never seen it in 25 years working. But, to learn coding at home, no age limit on that of course. What happens to developers at 40? I don't know, I can only speculate. If you can get away with it, edit your CV to obscure your age and dress a bit younger than your years. That might buy 10 years.

Don't be discouraged. You've already succeeded in something: starting and dedicating time to it. I'm 39, turning 40 next April. My career has been sort of "decimated" by AI and I have several ailments that stem from 2 major health issues I was diagnosed with back in 2016, which truncated my "experience" (as the employers like to say). I'm thinking about learning to code so maybe I can escape the next spree of unemployment that I see approaching; but not only that, I have also always been curious about such area of knowledge. Since I feel I have lost most of my capabilities for absorbing knowledge and my cognitive power after chemo, full-body radio and whatnot, I'm always afraid to take formal lessons in anything, as I feel I would be wasting my time and money. The good thing is that coding you can learn from home, at your own pace. I cannot give you a super positive success story to cheer you up, but I can tell you that you've done way much more than I have, and I do admire you for that. I guess I am the one taking motivation from you. Don't give up, alright?

Now that I found my will to live again thanks to my boyfriend and I want to make him proud, I am doing the rest of my specialization in Big Data. I thought I was too old and I was discouraged. Thank you for this video. Discriminating someone because of the person's age is bullshit. You can never know what happened in that person's life, nor the person's potential.

Thank you for writing this comment. I'm 25, graduated in Computer Engineering also but haven't worked in the area yet, pretty much had given up already. I started therapy in July and got a C# junior dev position just last week, salary is far from great but you gotta start somewhere. Keep pushing and believe in yourself, I'll be rooting for you!

@@leonardocarvalho7306 Thank you so much for the reply. It really made me smile. :) And - sure you have to start somewhere! I can see that you are grateful for your current position and I am sure that it's only the beginning and it will get better and better. Just wait and see. I will be rooting for you as well.

I love your videos, I started beeing serious about coding and data analysis/science abotout a yer ago. Recently I finished a postgrad in DS - and started slowly automating the stuff with python (pun intended) at my office, I am doing more and more slowly when I doubt myself I like to watch your videos - after that Im pumped up and just start to code for fun. Thank you !

Hi Giles ! You won't be expecting similar query from a person who is approaching his retirement? Yes. I have same thoughts and I will be retiring in the end of 2021. My current carrier has very little to do with computers. But I keep learning about computers. Lately I got fascinated about machine learning and started learning Python. I find myself comfortable in learning new concepts and programming. Participated in a few kaggle competitions too. Can there be a post retirement career in the field of machine learning for people like me?

In Canada they can't discriminate on those reasons listed either. But they do. Leaving age off of your CV can get you the second interview, but ultimately they'll find out before they make the decision.

One thing I had to unlearn, is a lot of people do not have one career path for life. I think most of us know that one person who was either a stay at home parent, or worked an entry level job for 10 plus years and then learned a skill. The thing is, the job market changes so fast, you are almost forced to be on your toes and constantly learning new things.

I don’t think it’s impossible, but the transition becomes more expensive. As an undergraduate switching majors to pivot your career is cheaper than having to invest in online courses and potentially go back to graduate school to make it happen.

As a car guy at 6:28 I see that you did that but about the car it'd have been better if you showed dumping the clutch and doing a front wheel burn out. I see that you've done this before and doing that here would've been so good. And btw great cinematography

30y old, LOL! I am 58 and would like to become Data Scientist. Additionally I am a little handicapped. Let me admit that I own a doctoral thesis in theoretical biology and, 10 years of coding experience, data analysis, math and modelling. What about my perspectives ? Let me admit, that though age discrimination is forbidden it takes part nevvertheless. It all ends up in hypocracy and psychogenic silence. The Omerta of age discrimination
