I’m reading her book Professional Trouble Maker now and she mentions how she tried to talk herself out of this TedTalk but did it anyway. So proud of her!

I love how she conducted this session. Perfect amount of humor, references and inspiration. The topic has been spoken about often, but her delivery of the topic was rather convincing and was very relatable.

wow, this talk is one of the greatest one that I clicked on KZfaq. Her message seems obvious but somehow it hits me deeply because in the past I was kind of speaking the truth even it hurt me terribly. The checkpoint that she mentioned is also very important before we speak out loud 1. Did you really mean it? 2. Can you defend it? 3. Did you say it with love? This can help us to say truthfully without offending others.

I cried hearing this. I get so much backlash for my words cuz I speak out. This encourages me to know that just cuz there is backlash, doesn't make what I did wrong.

I met her several times! We hung out at a conference or two. She is a cool person! This was a great Ted Talk on Fear! Good to see her on this platform!

I so appreciate this vid and Luvvie Ajayi Jones. I've often found myself being the one person speaking out. It can be exhausting and very unnerving being the first domino. Speaking of which, wow does the description beneath this vid get it wrong! It says that Jones " isn't afraid to speak her mind or to be the one dissenting voice in a crowd, and neither should you." In her Ted Talk she literally says precisely the opposite--that she is often afraid, but does it anyway. She never says "you shouldn't be afraid to speak out." She says it's hard and scary but try to do it anyway (which is the definition of courage, BTW--Jones is courageous, and inspires this particular middle-aged white guy! 🙂).

This is a great talk, and I encourage everyone to 'be the domino' as she puts it. I would however also encourage everyone reading this to investigate yourselves. It is very easy for those in a privileged position to not investigate our own beliefs and values, what we advocate, believing we already know it all. I know this from my own experience. I held racist beliefs, yet I didn't see them as racist. I held sexist beliefs, and I did not see these as sexist either. It is difficult to confront your own bigotry, it isn't something immediately clear because it is covered by a veil of "That's just how it is". What ripped me out of this mindset was listening to others. Women, black people, trans people speaking up about the various harmful power dynamics they face.

I just had a dream about people that I went to school with who are doing great things in the world, and a Ted Talk with Luvie pops up on my phone. I'm so proud of Luvie...my fellow Illini.

The synchronicities that parallel my own life listed in this video are amazing. Chemistry was the first class in my whole life where I failed an exam. It is also the reason I switched from a pre-med degree. I am terrified of taking a vacation by myself, putting my writing out there for others to judge, and public speaking. I love sky diving and dolphins! I am also a Capricorn. My take away- the universe wants me to start doing the things that make me uncomfortable! Thank you for this amazing video!

I learned that when speaking your truth, speak it with love not out of fear because you need help or support. Understand your own intentions and where you’re operating from (what emotion led you) when you deliver it.

I like the natural atmosphere she created while discussing the fear of becoming the trailblazer-the domino-and why most people would not want to be in that position. In a world where everyone expects you to follow the rules and play your part, sometimes that role isn't well suited for that person, and the rules must be changed not just for you, but also for the benefit of the other players.

Just watched this on my lunch break and wow...just wow. A short, but very powerful and insightful talk by the magnificent Luvvie. Silence is compliance. Don't just be a voice for yourself; be a voice for others.

Seeing this right at this moment is everything to me.

At 72, I've given up being the "silent" revolutionary. When I was younger, I voiced support for a newly graduated black female with a degree in health care administration. I was a manager under her at the time, but her position was desired by the staff pharmacist. He lied about my position. No one ever bothered to ask me about it, including the young lady. I lost my job over it and eventually so did she. A couple of years later, she stopped my husband on the street to apologise. The polnt is that we must commit ourselves to listen to each other, every day and in our courts, truthfully without the bias of racism or sexism. I spent most of my life thinking that I was protecting myself and my family, but many people will do anything for a buck. They won't care when the result is murder, destroyed health and financial stability of a family or anything else. They're own personal goal (s) is the only one that matters. Getting the dominoes to fall correctly takes concentration, education and timing.

I love her, I have so much fear I take medication and it’s been a mental health issue for my whole life, to choose to feel that blows my mind.

I watched this like 2 years ago, but it is only now that I definitely understand the full meaning behind her words. I will not stay silent anymore.

I love this as a Capricorn too, I feel our love for being on the solid ground literally and metaphorically helps us be uncomfortable for the greater good.
