REAPER has "Track Input FX" insert slots. These come after the input and before the recorder, and let you print processed audio. REAPER also makes it easy to simultaneously record processed and unprocessed versions of a given input signal if you so desire.

Great video Chris. As another alternative, Apollo and (newer) Antelope interfaces both have DSPs and can run really good mic pre emulators, compressors and EQs direct into your track. More expensive than a Presonus 2i2 interface but can be less expensive than good hardware mic pres, compressors and EQs.

@HardwiredMusicMaker
@HardwiredMusicMaker 2 жыл бұрын
@@valentinzwick5408 I don’t think the ID14 does have DSP capability but it does have - by all reports - an excellent mic pre of its own. If you’re looking for an affordable upgrade the ART MPA II (outboard) mic pre is very affordable and beat out many more expensive mic pre’s in a blind shootout done by Sound On Sound Magazine. You can find a gently used one usually for a couple of hundred.

I started to do this about a year ago in Logic 9 but I also got a pretty ok Behringer mixer with a pretty nice compressor and I am not sure the plugins sound any better. I also got a RNC that I can hook up to either the mixer or my soundcard so I belive I am good to go for a nice amateur homerecording. The mixer is sweet for livestreaming also cause you can go live right away and there is no need to fiddle with my daw and plugins.

Hello Chris! Thank you for your always great videos. In relation to this, I'm into buying an ART VOICE CHANNEL, which I understand has the same preamp than the ART PRO MPA II, but with all the channel strip process. I have read very good reviews about both of them. Have you ever had the chance to listen to them? Do you think the purchase is worth it? Do you have another preference with a budget below $750? I want it for my home studio and to improve my vocal sound. I work with a Scarlett interface and its preamps are to "dry" in my opinion. See ya at our "Discover Your Voice" course!

I'm usually not the type to comment on youtube videos, but....while the processing being applied is quite good, I would rather record to the track RAW then add the processing during the mix. If you need to go back and re-record anything, it will be much easier to match the recording without having to fine tune all that processing. I used to subscribe to this method back in the days of recording to TAPE and trying to get as close to the sound you wanted when you printed to tape, because adding EQ and compression after the fact would increase tape hiss and noise. Obviously that is no longer the case. I know you can save the settings of the plugin into the session, but things get screwy.
@neildspeers
@neildspeers 2 жыл бұрын
I would think it might also depend on whether your studio is for just you or if you record others. If you are doing only your own vocals then having everything set and never touching it would be fine for external gear. Obviously, if you're always changing it for different vocalists that's different.

Quick question does this add latency to the recording, and how do we avoid this with plugins….. I have acoustica audio plugins that causes latency when you try to record with it
@floriansimon2578
@floriansimon2578 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it will add the latency. The amount of latency depends on your set ASIO Buffer Size (128 or lower starts to feel like realtime when playing VSTi's). The question is, if your computer can handle your project at that low buffer size. If not, you need DSP for monitoring on your interface or hardware. I personally won't have any singer monitor through the DAW because even at 7-10ms round-trip latency the combfiltering on the InEars will be distracting for most vocalists.

Do you still post process the vocals with things like eq comp or u leave em like taht???
@sijel
@sijel 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t get it…all you did was put the Schoeps channel strip on the Aux instead of directly on the track insert. So all you’re fixing is that the waveform LOOKS puny (while the sound is just fine)? This means you are printing the processed signal (including any mistakes you may have in the Aux channel settings). Why wouldn’t I want to keep the flexibility to process the raw print track while I’m mixing and THEN bounce the vocal to a “Pretty Looking track” later??
@DaveYanofsky
@DaveYanofsky 2 жыл бұрын
I thought exactly the same thing... Record raw, tweak the plugin, bounce to make the waveform look more uniform. Same result, no? Ideally, all vocalists would work the mic as best they can to tame dynamics. And I thought the whole bandwagon now was NOT to use our eyes but instead our ears lol. So how the waveform looks really should be less important with that train of thought. My preferred method is to have the vocal chain that will eventually be used on the mix in place when the vocalist tracks. That way, they hear in real time as they are tracking vox kind of how it will sound on the finished track. But it's not being done destructively like in this video. Hopefully encourages a better performance out of the vocalist, but can be tweaked afterwards. Pro Tools can handle the plugin latency and can nudge to taste if necessary.
@bptone4667
@bptone4667 2 жыл бұрын
Right. But sometimes seeing immediately how the result of the FX will come out, fixing dynamic issues, can help - just like recording with hardware. And printing can help not to screw around for days on a sound… but it depends on what you want to achieve and how much time you want to spend with….
@flossieferguson6367
@flossieferguson6367 2 жыл бұрын
@@bptone4667 I agree. Its about recording with intention and moving on and building from there. You can always leave every decision in the recording process open , that in theory sounds like the best approach but in practice your better off burning your decisions into the track and moving forward rather than always delaying a decision till the end.
@TacomaEscape
@TacomaEscape 2 жыл бұрын
This workflow also forces you to get great recording and spend less time editing and mixing. I use to do the same thing for many years but this workflow helps you get pro recordings and massively speeds up your mixing workflow. I went from taking 2 months to mix a song to literally 4-8hrs. I didn’t get it at first either until last year. Kicking myself now for all the time I spent on mixes. Forward motion.
@sijel
@sijel 2 жыл бұрын
@@TacomaEscape There is no workflow improvement at all. All he is doing is printing the input with Insert effects to the track. If you don't get the input settings exactly right, you've got potentially unsalvageable audio on that "printed" track. This is a key issue if you are self-engineering. You can't usually get those input parms totally correct and so it's better and FASTER to use rough settings on input, don't print the effects and then fine tune the Schoeps settings after the recording takes are done and you've comped as necessary. If you want "pretty" waveforms after that, you just Bounce to a separate track and archive the original takes/comps.

The Title says RAW vocals .... I have a question.. I want to record vocals 'RAW' so that I can reamp them through a preamp later. If I use the mic pre on my input device (PreSonus Studio 192) will that not color the vocal and how will that effect reamping that vocal track through an external preamp?

Why do you want your track recorded so hot - this is digital recording, not going to multi-track tape! This seems to go against the generally accepted wisdom about the levels to aim for when tracking into a digital system. Also, sure, use a tad of compression on your way in if required or desired, but why on earth would you want to fix in so much compression, limiting, EQ whatever to the recorded track before you start mixing? With most people recording using at least 24 bit, the dynamic range gives a far better noise floor and loads more headroom for processing and editing. Perhaps the actual issue is to do with the monitoring level and mix in the headphones - not too hard to solve; but to process the recorded signal so much, not just the monitored signal, seems to be leading folks up a dead end ally rather than down the road to enlightenment.
@BreauxBobby
@BreauxBobby 2 жыл бұрын
Real world scenarios. Vocalist will get hot. How do you tame that? The reason you have outboard compression is to prevent clipping. Same concept in the DAW without the cost. When I record vocals, I'm always on hovering above or below the threshold of clipping, no matter how careful I am to set the levels.

IMO, your vocal wave is way too compressed, it sounds dead and flat. Dynamics are what we WANT not a boring overly compressed and lifeless recording level. Relying on hardware/software to do ALL the work is not a good thing, the singer needs to learn mic control. Want to yell, then move back from the mic, want to be more dynamic and quite, move closer to the mic without creating the proximity effect. Takes practice but it gives life to vocals.

This seems like faux advice to make people who don't really know what's going on happy. The ONLY things youre doing here are A) Making the waveform look prettier (who cares?). In fact it's actually less helpful because you can't easily identify the soft and loud parts of the song. B) Reducing the amount of real time plug ins you need (Who cares? Whose computer can't handle thousands at this point?) C) Making irreversible changes to your audio chain that would sound exactly the same with a real time plugin. (HUGE DRAWBACK). So 2 things no one cares about and a glaring drawback. This channel taught me many things back in the day, thank you for that. But this video is garbage and should be deleted.
