A short commercial I actually produced quite some time ago now. Almost two years ago in fact. For one reason or another, including the state of the world at the time, it never got shared. A lot has changed since then, including my filmmaking kit and set up, grading techniques and pretty much everything, but I thought it would still be worth a quick share!
Produced on the LUMIX GH5S in 2020. A short narrative piece shot on Dartmoor National Park, UK.

WOW! I’m in Toronto but my cousin who lives in Teignmouth took me on a wonderful hike on Dartmoor in March 2020. It was magical. Such beauty, land sea sky and golden ever changing light. I’d love to spend some more time there to catch the sun rising and setting and see the stars at night.

Thanks Kashif. Honestly, I'm actually struggling to remember 😂. My setup has changed quite a bit since I shot this, particularly lenses. I'm pretty sure I used mostly the Samyang T1.5 cine lenses, EF mount with a speedbooster. The widest shots are probably the Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 mark II.

Hi. I've picked up a used gh5s with the 12-35 recently. Your video was a major inspiration. I am about to film a documentary. Could you please point to a guide that covers the shooting setting or setup to extract the best image quality out of it. Also ways to improve it's autofocus for doc purposes. Thank you!
@RoweFilms
@RoweFilms Жыл бұрын
Hello. That's good to hear thank you. I'd recommend shooting everything in V-Log, in any of the 10 bit 422 settings. If you go with one of the All-I settings, that's how you will get the best quality out of camera with maximum data under the hood. Alternatively, you can output to an external recorder such as the Atomos Ninja V, and record externally in ProRes 422, or ProRes RAW. ProRes RAW being absolute beast mode, the best quality you will get out of the GH5S. You might find it useful to watch this BTS of mine, if you haven't already: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oZd5qNuZnrGcdJ8.html I'm not the man to ask about Autofocus though I'm afraid, as I always shoot manual. Best of luck!

is this on log? did you work in resolve or how did you create the color grading for this one? I love that you manage make it look softer and older than the sharp contrast otherwise the gh series of cameras often produce and is like a trademark issue for them... I often like the black magic OG colors though they can end up too black... this one was pretty good I have to say in comparison to good ones I seen on the OG. thanks for uploading"
@RoweFilms
@RoweFilms 11 ай бұрын
Thanks! Yes I always shoot VLog. Only exception is when shooting RAW and even then I convert the linear RAW image to Log for grading. Never find myself with a contrast problem with these cams as shooting Log that's very much up to you to dial in. Cheers!

@@RoweFilms I see.. that is great to hear! now in 2023 do you still gonna use the GH5s, or do you think is better to find a GH6 house and keep using ones old lenses? I got three lenses from the Gh3... I also been thinking to get the Black Magic 4k or even wait for their new L format pocket camera that I guess will not be able to take 4/3 lenses but it might be the best choice at the end of 2023 and forward... but I am not sure... I feel for acting in front of the camera I need continuous autofocus, and for going out in the city making street documentaries of people's lifestyles I need low light abilities that I can trust... But the Black Magic Cameras do have a different fallout of color science that is very appealing .. but maybe is more about How one learn to color grade than it is n issue of the Panasonic GH cameras to handle a similar look of the Black magic cameras? what is your opinion and advice? thanks for getting back! cheers

Hey tommy, first and foremost I am a big fan of your work and one of the reasons I actually started trying shooting weddings. So I started shooting them not a long time ago I am thinking about switching from my Fuji to one of the Lumix cameras. Since I'm not a Lumix expert I'm not sure if I should go with the S5 or GH6. From what I have read and seen the S5 has a big advantage in low light, DR, better image quality and more battery life and it's also possible to have a battery grip as well. But the gh6 has the upper hand in image stabilization, AF and recording limit. In your opinion which is the better camera to shoot weddings and does it have another big difference between them that i am not seeing or know about?
@RoweFilms
@RoweFilms Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much that's good to hear mate. That's a good question because both are great cameras, but as of 2022, I'd have to say GH6. The low light advantage you speak of is there, however the gap has narrowed considerably with advancements in tech. The GH6 is a significant improvement on the GH5 in low light, thanks to functions like the DR Boost mode which produces a very clean image. So this is less of a ‘thing’ now. And if you follow my channel, you’ll probably see I’ve never been one to buy into the argument that a bigger sensor is superior, because that’s just not the case. There’s always trade offs. The GH6 overall is a more advanced camera in my opinion. Much better functions and settings, especially in terms of resolutions and frame rates. The S5 for example doesn't even shoot 4K 60p in 10 bit, whereas the GH6 shoots 5.7K 60p, 4K 120p and HD 300p, all in 10 bit. Further, the S Series line all have cropping in on the sensor, and the S5 has some recording limits too. In my opinion, the S Series, as fantastic as they are, are now starting to show signs of their age and are in need of an update soon. The GH6 is the more future proofed camera right now and gives you more options. Being m43, lenses are smaller, lighter and cheaper - something that shouldn't be sniffed at when considering wedding shoots. A good way to think about it is, the GH6 is top of its line. The S5 is bottom of its line. Or should I say, entry level. And that plays out in specs and functions etc. But there is no disputing both cameras create fantastic looking images with very little between them in terms of visual quality. Cheers
@augustolucca4024
@augustolucca4024 Жыл бұрын
@@RoweFilms Hey tommy, thanks so much for taking the time and replying it. I was already leaning towards the GH6 but hearing from you has helped me a lot with the decision. The GH6 is it then. May I ask one last question? Is there any budget lenses would you recommend for shotting weedings? The GH6 is very expensive at least in my country and right now I can't really afford lenses that costs almost the same price as the camera body, so i will have to go for the cheaper ones. I've been thinking in buying one prime and one zoom lens as well, so that i can have a bit of both worlds and not run without options whilst filming it. If you have any recommendations I would gladly accepted it. Thanks so much for everything Tommy. I wish you all the very best. Cheers mate.

@@augustolucca4024 no worries. Yes the Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 ii is a great all rounder. Basically a 24-70 equivalent in ‘full frame’ terms. Very versatile focal length and it’s pin sharp, if that’s the kind of thing you like. Primes wise, the 25mm and 42.5mm f/1.7 are very nice lenses, fast, produce lovely looking images and incredible value. Hope that helps
