I had an amazing but challenging time testing all of these mics. I think this video can help anyone who wants to upgrade their mic in the price range between 1k and 2k. Sure there are plenty of other mics in this range but these are the ones I was most interested in. Hopefully this video can bring you some value and help you out during your mic hunt. Everything is being ran through a Neve 5211 into the Apollo X4. What microphone is your favorite?

Appreciate the video bruh. so much insight. Im now looking into the Lauten. The 8000 does have a similar tonality to the sony and its probably just a sound you dont like. But the 8000 has become one of my fav modern vocal mics. I find that with my recordings, even if i have to tame some harshness or sibilance, the results still come out better than some of my other mics. I think its the amount of detail i love so much. also love my WA47. i track most vocals with one of the two, or my Blueberry. another underrated mic. Thanks again man, definitely subscribing

I've owned and sold most of those. WA are a good company, but I (also) had reliability issues with my wa47. It developed a hum after the warranty had expired, and I looked into repairing it, but it was a nightmare. I've now got an avantone cv12, which is as cheap as chips and the sound is good. I've never owned anything by manley, but heard nothing but good things. Great video 📹

Have you tried the TF47? I’m looking into a new mic and I’m currently deciding between the two. For more personal use I’m thinking the 47 as it’s usually suited best for male vocalists and it’s fairly versatile elsewhere. But the silky top-end of the 51 sounds so smooth and airy.

Alright comment number 2, this time after listening with headphones. I'm paying more attention to the raw unprocessed vocals, and I think the TLM103 sounded the best. It has great mids for cutting through a mix and enough clarity without being harsh. It's not nearly as bright or harsh as all the haters say it is, speaking from personal experience since I use it daily. Warm CX12 was actually my 2nd fav and the WA47 was my 3rd fav for if I didn't want a crisp "modern" vocal. My 3 least favorite were the FC387 in forward mode, TF51, and WA8000. All 3 lacked weight in the mids, and the FC387 actually has a nasty harsh top end imo. Again, thanks for the well done video man!
@jacksp8de
@jacksp8de Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It’s so crazy how we can have such different ears. I think all of these mics are great tbh I think the TLM103 is great but I honestly love the FC387. Check out some other recordings. Maybe it’s my preamp the 5211 has a silk knob that adds harmonics. I can see how that can seem harsh. Ill upload raw audio files soon. The TF51 is my FAV wow I can’t believe you ranked it so low 😩 its so open and I think sounds better than all of the other mics on my voice. It’s so smooth. My top are the 1.TF51 2.FC387 3. CX12 4.WA47 5.WA800 6.TLM103 and the Cu29 are tied lol All of these mics are great to me and you can make dope music with any of them. I mean Too Short uses the FC287, Doja Cat uses the Cu29,and T-Pain and many more uses the TLM103 so you really can’t go wrong
@subtonic24
@subtonic24 Жыл бұрын
@@jacksp8de Haha yup everyone hears things differently and has a different personal preference. I made a similar comment on Carl Moore's video about the FC387 in forward mode being really bright and not liking it so I don't think your 5211 has anything to do with it. At the end of the day tho, these are just tools. The talent behind the mic and the engineer skills are what really makes or breaks a song so you can't go wrong with any of these options!

i’ve had the lauren audio atlantis fc-387 for about a year now and let me tell you… this is the only mic you will ever need, from different tonal variations, polar patterns, and -10 to +10 Db switch. 3:52, 9:49 Although these samples aren't level matched the tf29 is about 100-200 cheaper but to my ears has a much more pleasing sound than the tlm 103. The 103 is one of the harshest mics out there but surprisingly sounds amazing on some female vocalist. The tf29 just sounds so much more balanced, top end sheen, and a "radio ready" sound out of the freakin box.

My two cents -- Lauten Audio Atlantis from these options and it's really good. My picks would be: Stam Audio SA-47 mk3 Tube ($1300 pre-order) and my fav FET, the Chandler TG Mic ($2000). To beat the SA-47 mk3...you have to jump to either the Lauten Eden, Flea 47, Soyuz 017 Tube or Chandler REDD mics. 3-4x the price.

@@jacksp8de I had some mixed feelings about the SA-47 mk I, but the mkII and mkIII are stellar. I was very close to buying the Soyuz 017T ($4500) when I got to hear the SA-47 mkII. At least the REDD comes with a fantastic mic pre built into in the mic. @@jacksp8de i like it but honestly don’t think it’s worth the USA retail price lol. after doing hella research on the U87, i found out the markup for Neumann mics in the US is crazy, so you’re better off either buying one new from a store in Germany or buying used. i bought a used one in great condition from a Guitar Center in Florida for $2085, and bought the shock mount separately. $2400 is a lot better than $3900 when you add in US tax lol. i’ve been wanting to try out the TF29 and TF51. if i had to buy a new mic i’d either get one of them or prolly get one of the more affordable Lauten’s. but doing what you did is the best way - getting them in your hands and trying them for yourself before committing to one if you can

@@ItzrealMusic hell yea we on the same wave. Price don’t always mean better. And you right a cheaper mic might fit your voice better. I do really like the Eden but yeah that price crazy. It’s almost the same as a u87. The TF51 is a baby Elam 251. I’m real happy with it. Maybe I’ll upgrade to the real 251 one day. It just gotta make sense

That tf29 didn’t get the respect it deserves. I feel like it was processed differently. It’s primarily a vocal mic.

I didn’t talk about it much but that’s my fault. I did include the unprocessed version for each mic so you can hear the raw sound though. I don’t think I’ll do this many mics in a shootout again. It’s too many at once for me to properly listen to and give each mic it’s flowers but these are all fantastic mics. Now that I had time with it I would choose TF29 over the tlm103. It’s a great mic.

He was farther away from the mic, the placement and the pop filter too that changes a lot the sound of the mic

Can you do a comparison of these expensive mics with less expensive condenser mics?
@jacksp8de
@jacksp8de 6 ай бұрын
That’s a good idea. I will order some cheaper ones. The cheapest one I got is the LA320 which is $600 I think. Oh and the SM7b. TBH I know people who make millions either the SM7b so it don’t really matter. I’ll still do a test to confirm

@@jacksp8de The test has to be with same song fully mixed and mastered with same vocals recorded with two different mics. That would be the only way to know the sound difference.

@@AnwaarAliOfficial well the raw vocals is the way it actually sounds. I can mix an iPhone voice memo and make it sound good enough. Listen to most songs by The Weeknd. He records with a 400 dollar mic the SM7b. Billie Elish Ocean Eyes used the AT2020 which is $99
