Hi there, I know this video is old but this question is burning into me. I want to register an EP before it releases. I know based on your video that this means I will not put that there is an artist on it. However, when It does release in about a week, how will BMI know that I am the artist that should be given the royalties. I watched your other video on doing this as an independent artist so I understand how to set everything up. I am just curious how BMI will know that the work is not only written by Parker Keskinen but released by the artist Bottled Minds.

On this subject here though, I am a little lost. When I released my first CD back in 2010 I created a publishing company with BMI, but I did sign up for CD Baby Pro. So all my work in BMI, has CD Baby listed as my publisher. I don't do anything with my publishing company and never received any performance rights checks, obviously, being such a small artist. :) Recently I started releasing singles and I am not sure if I should use SoundTrust or CD Baby Boost. I checked the registration in BMI and it looks all messy. I am not sure CD Baby is doing a good job in registering the songs with my PRO. Would you recommend SongTrust over CD Baby Boost? I believe I can't have both, right? And If I am using one of these administrators, I don't need to worry about registering the songs with BMI myself, right? Thanks for all your tips here! 😍

Hi Ryan, thanks for all you do for us man. Question: As a Trance Music Producer myself, in regards to 11:30 of your video, would I definitely pick "No" for "Are there any Artists?" No, there is no vocals or singers in my particular trance track, just instrumental you can say. I was getting confused with that question because, technically my instrumental can be considered a performance because it can be played at Starbucks (one example you gave somewhere else). So that's why when you said "performing artist" was not sure since my tracks are considered performances when they placed anywhere. Let me know if has nothing to do with that type of "performance." In BMI, when asked who the publisher is of a cover song that I arranged, are they referring to the cover song's publisher or myself as the publisher of my own arrangement. Earlier in the video when you had the option to pick from your name or the lion bolt production, you chose lion Bolt. Quick question for you: I am an artist and publisher registering my music through BMI with another artist that is on ASCAP. I want to hold the rights as a publisher and writer along with my co-writer from ASCAP. When I attempt this through BMI through my publishing account, I get flagged as an error because the PRO doesn't allow for non-BMI artists to register through my publishing account. If I register as a writer and include my co-writer with no publishing, then the registration will go through. My question is-this: "If I register the works through BMI under my writers account including the co-writer, then how can the publishing be registered ? I was always told that when it comes to royalties it's split: publishing / writers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Steve

So what would you do in the instance of the author of the song being an ASCAP affiliate and the Composer being a BMI affiliate? Since you can't register the ASCAP information on the BMI site would you by default have to list the composer as a author/composer even though they didn't write lyrics to the song your registering?
