What is the Squier Contemporary Active Starcaster good for?

I love a good Squier Starcaster, but the Squier Contemporary Active Starcaster has long confounded me. A Starcaster with active humbucking pickups? I'm sorry, is this a metal guitar? Or is it as genre-agnostic as its Classic Vibe and Affinity Series counterparts?

Love this Guitar! 🤩 Great vid!👌 I have the Gunmetal Grey one. I'm turning it into a Gretsch/Starcaster abomination coz... 🤷‍♂ Ripped out the Active stuff, It now has a Tron in the Bridge and a p90 in the neck, a Duesenberg trem, block inlays and... "almost" a pickguard (still working on that 😜)

I’ve used the gunmetal metallic one for the past year and and half as my main go-to. I like it so much I just ordered the contemporary Telecaster and if I love it just as much, I’m going to grab the Strats too. I don’t have the Tele yet, but the Starcaster buries the player series Strat I had in feel, tone, and build quality. For having active pickups it’s incredibly versatile.

Really love that headstock. I think one of the reasons I've always wanted a Firebird, or the Trini Lopez/Dave Grohl guitar is because of that general headstock shape. And I think it fits nicely here.

I was going to get one around Christmas time but I bought a prs se ce24 instead. I don’t regret it but I still want the starcaster. So much gear and so little money.

im glad they put a 12"" radius on this i might actually get one. i can never get on with guitars with a 9.5"" radius with a tunomatic bridge

It's a curious one, it's not a guitar configuration I remember anyone ever asking for. But it works. I love the look of the gunmetal one and it's great to have a non-typical looking Fender (for Fender).

the headstock is kooky, but it can grow on you. the headstock on the tom delonge looks great, i think.

i already have a classic vibe which i absolutely adore...but i would buy one of these just for the looks. it's an effing starcaster, they're already badass. but the sealed holes and the roasted neck on these ❤️❤️❤️

I have the Contemporary Tele RH in that same finish and if the neck on that Starcaster is anything like the neck on my Tele, it's amazing. That was the thing that absolutely blew me away about that guitar was the neck. I ended up replacing everything, but the neck and body but still put active pickups in the guitar and it sounds wonderful.

So conflicted about the dichotomy between the look and sound of this guitar, but I can't deny both are nice. Is the natural portion of the headstock a veneer or is that just a gloss finish contrasted with satin/unfinished on the fretboard?

This could be "the poor man's" eVh SA126. A set of Fishman Fluence pups would probably give even more tonal flexibility. I may need to get the Gumetal version but that Gold is tasty too!

I'm impressed! I've made a choice to play some other active pickups since, and yeah, these should probably be upgraded eventually, but they're a decent start!

I have one of these, and so hopefully someone here can answer a question: overall, I like it (I like the shape and look), but the neck is just way too thin. I'd like to get a replacement, but I'm wondering the best way to do this. Will a "Mooncaster" neck from Warmouth fit, given that this is a "contemporary" model? Or is that a problem for how it fits? I know Warmouth makes great necks (I have one on a Strat), but am unsure if this will work. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'd personally contact Warmoth directly but my instinct is that it should be fine.

I've got one of the Jazzmasters from this series - the roasted maple neck is amazing, those SQR pickups are so bad! I've got a Fishman Fluence waiting to be installed!

When I find them, I point them out. I honestly think that it's a great buy for under $500 if you like the way it looks and sounds. No fit or finish issues, no problems that I'd consider to be beyond personal taste. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ dunno what else to tell ya. Some people won't like the pickups, but they exceeded my expectations and I found a little eq went a long way. It's hard to add criticism when the guitar simply seems to be a great value.
